Chapter 1: The Photograph

The kitchen had never felt so small.

Vanessa Johnson stood on one side of the marble island, her fists trembling against the countertop. Across from her, Marcus held his phone like it was the last thing in the world he could protect.

Between them stood their eight-year-old daughter, Emily.

“Give me your phone, Marcus,” Vanessa said.

Marcus stared at her.

“Why are you acting like this?””

“Because you’ve been acting suspicious for weeks.””

“I’m tired of this.””

“You’re tired?”” Vanessa laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“You disappear after dinner. You take phone calls outside. You turn your screen away whenever I walk into the room. And now you’re telling me I’m the problem?””

Marcus glanced toward Emily.

“Lower your voice. She’s right here.””

Vanessa followed his gaze.

Emily stood near the refrigerator, clutching her phone with both hands. Her shoulders were hunched, and her eyes moved nervously between her parents.

Vanessa's anger faltered for half a second.

Then she looked back at Marcus.

“Don’t use our daughter as an excuse.””

“I’m not.””

“Yes, you are.””

Marcus exhaled sharply.

“Vanessa, there are things happening that you don’t understand.””

“Then explain them.””

“I can’t.””

The answer landed harder than a confession.

Vanessa slowly straightened.

“You can’t?””

Marcus said nothing.

“Who is she?””

His jaw tightened.

“Who is the woman calling you every night?””

“There is no woman.””

“Then why does the same number keep calling after midnight?””

Marcus looked toward the phone.

Vanessa noticed.

That tiny movement told her more than his words ever could.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you have no right to go through my private messages.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Your private messages?”” she whispered.

“I’m your wife.””

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Not everything is about you.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I spent twelve years building this family with you.””

“I know.””

“I put my career on hold when Emily was born.””

“I know.””

“I moved across the country because you got a promotion.””

“I know.””

“I stood beside you when your father died. I defended you when your brother accused you of stealing from the company. I supported every decision you made.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“And I never asked you to keep score.””

The kitchen went silent.

Emily's lips trembled.

“Daddy…”

Marcus immediately softened.

“What is it, baby?””

“Why is Mommy crying?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She wiped her cheek quickly.

“I'm okay, sweetheart.””

Emily shook her head.

“No, you're not.””

Marcus walked around the island and crouched beside her.

“Hey. Look at me.””

Emily slowly raised her eyes.

“Nobody is leaving you,” Marcus said.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The words hurt because she wasn't sure they were true anymore.

Then the phone vibrated.

Marcus stood instantly.

Vanessa looked down.

A message had appeared across the screen.

Marcus saw it too.

His face drained of color.

Vanessa reached for the phone.

Marcus grabbed it first.

“Don’t.””

“What did it say?””

“Nothing.””

“You're lying.””

“Vanessa, please.””

She stepped closer.

“Let me see it.””

“No.””

“Marcus!””

Emily covered her ears.

“Please stop!””

Vanessa froze.

Marcus looked at his daughter, guilt flashing across his face.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus unlocked the phone.

He stared at the message for several seconds.

Vanessa could see only part of the screen.

There was a photograph.

A document.

And Marcus's full legal name printed across the top.

Vanessa's heartbeat quickened.

“What is that?””

Marcus didn't answer.

She reached for the phone again.

This time, he didn't stop her.

Vanessa took it.

The photograph showed an old hospital record.

The paper was yellowed at the edges.

There was a date from twenty years earlier.

A mother's name.

A father's name.

And beneath them, a handwritten notation that made Vanessa's stomach turn.

She read it twice.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“This isn't yours.””

Marcus's face had gone completely still.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“Marcus… whose document is this?””

His lips parted.

Before he could answer, another message appeared.

*She deserves to know who her real father is.*

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Emily was watching them.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

Marcus whispered, “Vanessa, listen to me.””

She stared at him.

“Who is Emily's real father?””

May you like

Marcus didn't answer.

And in that silence, Vanessa realized the woman she thought was destroying her marriage might have been trying to expose something much worse.
