Chapter 7: The $650,000 Secret

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Six hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

That was the amount my grandmother had left me.

Not sixty-five thousand.

Not a mistaken bank statement.

Six hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

I looked at Thomas, who was watching me carefully.

"Emily?"" he asked.

"What's happened?""

I put the phone on speaker.

"Mom, where did the money go?""

My mother's breathing was uneven.

"I didn't know how to tell you.""

"Tell me what?""

"Your grandmother left instructions. She wanted the money protected until you turned thirty-five. She didn't trust Daniel.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why would Grandma not trust Daniel?""

Mom began crying.

"Because she saw something.""

I gripped the table.

"What?""

"Two years before she died, she visited you at your house. Daniel thought she was asleep in the guest room. But she heard him arguing with someone on the phone.""

"Who?""

"She didn't know. She only heard him talking about your inheritance.""

I closed my eyes.

My grandmother had always been protective of me.

She was the woman who taught me how to bake apple pies, how to balance a checkbook, and how never to let a man convince me that I couldn't survive without him.

I remembered her last birthday.

She had held my hand and said, "Emily, love someone with your heart, but never surrender your ability to stand on your own feet.""

I had laughed at the time.

Now those words felt like a warning.

"Mom, where is the money?""

"Most of it is still protected in the trust.""

I exhaled.

"Most of it?""

"Daniel convinced me to release some of the funds for an investment. He said you had agreed.""

I stared at the floor.

"How much?""

"One hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""

My knees weakened.

"Mom!""

"I know. I know. I made a terrible mistake.""

"Did you give it to Daniel?""

"Yes.""

Thomas immediately began writing something on his notepad.

I pressed my hand against my forehead.

"When?""

"About three months before Lily was born.""

Three months.

Around the same time Daniel had started coming home late.

Around the same time he had begun complaining about money.

Around the same time he had secretly changed my insurance beneficiary.

"Mom, why didn't you call me?""

"He told me you were stressed. He said you wanted him to handle the investment privately.""

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had been using everyone around me.

My mother.

My trust.

My identity.

Even my grandmother's final gift.

Then my mother whispered:

"There's something else.""

I opened my eyes.

"What?""

"He came here today with a lawyer. He says the money belongs to him because you signed an agreement.""

"What agreement?""

"I don't know. He showed me a paper with your signature.""

My blood ran cold.

Thomas stood up.

"Emily, don't go there alone.""

I looked at him.

"I'm not going anywhere until I know what he has.""

"Let me contact the authorities first.""

I nodded.

But before Thomas could make another call, my mother spoke again.

"Emily, there's one more thing. Daniel brought Vanessa with him.""

I felt my heart sink.

"Vanessa is there?""

"Yes. They're both waiting.""

I ended the call.

Thomas immediately contacted his investigator.

Within minutes, we had arranged for an officer to accompany us.

I wasn't going to face Daniel alone again.

Not this time.

When I arrived at my mother's house, Daniel was sitting in the living room.

He wore a gray suit.

Vanessa sat beside him, holding a designer handbag.

My mother was standing near the fireplace, her hands clasped tightly.

Daniel looked up.

For a moment, his expression suggested he hadn't expected me to arrive with an attorney and a police officer.

Then he smiled.

"Emily. Finally.""

I didn't sit down.

"What do you want?""

He gestured toward the sofa.

"Let's be reasonable.""

"Answer my question.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Daniel, I told you she would make this difficult.""

I turned toward her.

"You have a lot of confidence for someone who tried to take my house and my insurance money.""

Her smile disappeared.

Daniel stood.

"That's enough.""

"No, Daniel. It isn't.""

I placed a copy of the bank documents on the coffee table.

"Explain the $120,000 transfer.""

He glanced at the paperwork.

"Investment expenses.""

"Whose investment?""

"Ours.""

"We don't have an ours anymore.""

His jaw tightened.

"You're still my wife.""

"That didn't seem to matter when I was bleeding on our kitchen floor.""

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

"Are we really still discussing that?""

I turned toward her.

"Yes. Because apparently, you both thought my life was worth seventy dollars.""

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

"Stop bringing up that night!""

The room fell silent.

I looked directly at him.

"Why? What happened that night that you're so afraid I'll remember?""

His face changed.

For a second, I saw genuine fear.

Then he recovered.

"You're twisting everything.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"We have records showing unauthorized financial transactions, suspected forged signatures, and an attempted beneficiary change.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You're her lawyer. Of course you're going to say that.""

The police officer spoke calmly.

"Mr. Carter, we're not here to debate. We need you to cooperate with the investigation.""

Daniel turned toward my mother.

"Tell her!""

Mom flinched.

"Daniel, please.""

"Tell her you signed the documents!""

I stared at my mother.

"Mom?""

She began crying.

"I signed something, Emily. But he told me it was only to protect your inheritance.""

Daniel grabbed a folder and threw it onto the table.

"Your mother agreed that the investment was legitimate. She knew exactly what she was doing.""

Thomas opened the folder.

He examined the first page.

Then the second.

His expression became serious.

"Mr. Carter, where did you obtain this document?""

Daniel crossed his arms.

"From her mother.""

Thomas pointed to the signature.

"Mrs. Carter, did you sign this?""

Mom shook her head.

"No.""

Daniel's smile vanished.

"What?""

"I signed the investment authorization. I never signed this.""

Thomas looked at the officer.

"Please photograph these documents.""

Vanessa suddenly stood.

"We're leaving.""

The officer moved toward the door.

"Nobody is leaving until we finish documenting what has been presented.""

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes were red now.

"Emily, please. We can still fix this.""

I stared at him.

"Can you bring back the woman who crawled across our kitchen floor begging you to save her baby?""

He looked away.

"Please.""

I reached into my handbag.

My fingers touched the small envelope.

Not yet.

I wasn't ready to give him those bills.

There was still something I needed to know.

I stepped closer.

"Daniel, did you know about the medical complication before I went into labor?""

His face went completely still.

Vanessa looked at him.

Then she whispered:

"Daniel, don't answer that.""

The officer immediately turned toward her.

"Why shouldn't he?""

She swallowed.

Daniel closed his eyes.

And for the first time, I realized Vanessa might know more about that night than even Michael.

That evening, Thomas received a message from the hospital investigator.

It contained a copy of an internal access report.

Someone had entered my medical file on the night of my delivery.

The access occurred at 8:42 p.m.

Thirty minutes before the ambulance arrived.

The employee identification number belonged to a temporary administrator.

A woman named Vanessa Reed.

But Vanessa had never worked for the hospital.

Thomas stared at the report.

Then he looked at me.

"Emily, we need to find out how she accessed your records.""

I looked at the document.

At the bottom was a note.

*Emergency access authorized by attending physician.*

The physician's name was clearly printed.

Dr. Helen Morris.

The same doctor who had just spoken to me.

May you like

And suddenly, I understood why Daniel had been so desperate to keep the medical records hidden.

The hospital wasn't the only place someone had been pretending to be me.
