Chapter 4: The Secret Behind That Night
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Michael stood on my porch, his face drained of color. His hands were trembling, and his eyes kept darting toward the street as though he expected someone to appear behind him.
I tightened my grip on the door.
"What did you just say?""
Michael swallowed.
"Emily, please let me explain.""
"Explain what? Why my daughter wasn't supposed to survive?""
He looked down.
"I didn't mean it the way it sounded.""
"Then tell me exactly what you meant.""
He glanced at the security camera above the door.
"Can I come inside?""
"No.""
"Please. This involves Lily.""
At the sound of her name, something inside me snapped.
"You don't get to use my daughter's name after telling me something like that.""
Michael took a step backward.
"Daniel was desperate that night. He had been drinking, and he was on the phone with me when you called for help.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Why was he talking to you?""
"Because we had a problem.""
"What problem?""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"Money. The business was collapsing. Daniel had borrowed from people he couldn't repay. He was trying to arrange another loan.""
I stared at him.
"And that had something to do with my labor?""
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Then he said something I would never forget.
"Daniel told me he couldn't afford to have you in the hospital that night.""
I blinked.
"What?""
"He was worried the hospital would discover something.""
My heart began pounding.
"What could a hospital possibly discover?""
Michael looked toward the living room.
"Your medical records.""
I felt cold.
"Those are private.""
"Not if someone has been using your insurance information.""
I took a step backward.
Michael continued.
"Daniel had been making claims under your policy. Some were legitimate. Others weren't. He used your information to cover expenses connected to Vanessa.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
"She had surgery earlier that year. Daniel arranged for some of the expenses to be billed under your policy.""
I gripped the edge of the door.
"And when I went into labor?""
"He panicked. He thought the hospital might investigate the discrepancies.""
I stared at him.
"So he left me there?""
Michael looked down.
"Yes.""
The silence between us felt suffocating.
My husband hadn't simply been selfish.
He had been protecting a financial scheme while I lay on the kitchen floor, begging him to save our child.
"Why didn't he tell me?"" I whispered.
"Because he was afraid you'd discover everything.""
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I could hear the rain from that night.
I could feel the cold kitchen tiles beneath my knees.
I could hear my own voice begging.
And I could see those seventy dollars lying beside the fruit bowl.
When I opened my eyes, Michael was still standing there.
"There's more," he said.
I stared at him.
"Of course there is.""
"Daniel didn't know whether Lily would survive the delivery. He had been telling me that if something happened to you, he would have control over the insurance payout and the house.""
I felt physically sick.
"What insurance payout?""
"The life insurance policy.""
I couldn't breathe.
I remembered signing documents Daniel had brought home during my pregnancy.
He had told me they were routine updates to our financial arrangements.
I had trusted him.
"Was he planning to kill me?""
Michael immediately shook his head.
"I don't know that. I never heard him say that.""
"Then don't make accusations you can't support.""
"I'm telling you what I heard.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
"I recorded part of our conversation that night.""
My blood ran cold.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel had started threatening me, too. I needed proof of what he was doing.""
He unlocked his phone.
Before he could play anything, my own phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered without speaking.
"Emily!"" His voice sounded frantic.
"Where is Michael?""
I looked at the man standing outside my door.
"Why?""
"Don't listen to him. He's lying.""
"Then why is he telling me things about the insurance policy?""
Silence.
Then Daniel spoke more quietly.
"Emily, I can explain everything.""
"You've had six months.""
"I know I made mistakes.""
"Leaving me on the kitchen floor wasn't a mistake. It was a decision.""
"Please. Think about Lily.""
I laughed bitterly.
"That's exactly what I've been doing.""
His voice suddenly sharpened.
"Michael is trying to destroy me. He's the one who handled the paperwork. He's the one who forged your signature.""
Michael's eyes widened.
I looked at him.
"Is that true?""
He shook his head vigorously.
Daniel continued.
"Come home. We can settle this privately.""
I looked at the man who had once promised to love me through sickness and health.
"Daniel, I have one question.""
"Anything.""
"Did you ever want our daughter?""
He didn't answer.
Not immediately.
But the silence told me enough.
Finally, he said, "Emily, this isn't the time.""
I ended the call.
Michael lowered his phone.
"I have the recording," he whispered.
I opened the door just enough to take it.
"Send it to my attorney.""
He nodded.
Then he hesitated.
"Emily, there's another reason I came here.""
I waited.
"Daniel is planning to declare bankruptcy. He's trying to move whatever money he has left before the bank freezes his accounts.""
"Why are you telling me?""
"Because he has something that belongs to you.""
"What?""
Michael looked directly at me.
"The original life insurance documents. And the beneficiary was changed two weeks before you went into labor.""
My hands went numb.
"To whom?""
Michael looked toward the street again.
Then he whispered:
"Vanessa.""
I closed the door.
I locked it.
Then I picked up Lily and held her against my chest.
I had spent months believing Daniel had abandoned me because he was a cruel, selfish man.
Now I was beginning to wonder whether his cruelty had been hiding something far more calculated.
That evening, Thomas called.
"Emily, I've received the recording from Michael.""
"Have you listened to it?""
"Yes.""
"What's on it?""
Thomas paused.
"Your husband discusses the insurance policy. But there's something else.""
"What?""
"The recording contains a conversation about a second beneficiary.""
I sat down.
"Who?""
Thomas lowered his voice.
"Emily, I think you need to hear this yourself.""
Then he played the recording.
And the first voice I heard wasn't Daniel's.
May you like
It was mine.
Except I had never been in that room.
