Chapter 9: The Recording That Changed Everything
Thomas requested the meeting for Friday morning.
Martin insisted that it take place at his office, with independent legal representation present.
I agreed.
Ben wanted to come, but Dr. Mitchell refused to discharge him.
His latest tests showed that he needed continued observation and treatment.
He was furious.
"I am not letting you face him alone.""
I sat beside his bed.
"You're not letting me do anything. You're my husband, not my prison guard.""
He gave me a tired look.
"Emily.""
I took his hand.
"I'll have Martin with me. And I'll record everything legally. You're going to stay here and let the doctors help you.""
He looked toward the window.
Then he nodded.
"Promise me something.""
"What?""
"If Thomas says anything about Dad, don't let him change the subject.""
I smiled sadly.
"I promise.""
Before I left, Lily climbed onto the hospital bed and placed a folded piece of paper on Ben's chest.
"It's for you, Daddy.""
He unfolded it.
It was another drawing.
This time, the three of us were standing beside a hospital bed. Ben had a big smile, and Lily had drawn a yellow sun above us.
At the bottom, she'd written:
Daddy is getting better.
Ben covered his mouth.
Lily touched his cheek.
"Don't cry. It's supposed to make you happy.""
He pulled her close.
"I'm happy, sweetheart.""
I watched them embrace.
And I made a promise to myself.
Whatever happened at Martin's office, I would not allow Thomas to take anything else from this family.
Thomas arrived at the meeting wearing a gray suit.
He looked older than he had at the hospital.
His hair was neatly combed, but his hands kept moving against the arms of his chair.
Martin introduced the independent investigator, a woman named Patricia Wells.
She placed a recorder on the table.
"Mr. Carter, this meeting is being documented. You may stop at any time.""
Thomas nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"You have your father's eyes.""
I said nothing.
He gave a small sigh.
"Richard always believed that everything could be repaired if he apologized enough.""
"Is that why you stole from him?""
Thomas's jaw tightened.
"I didn't steal anything.""
Martin opened a folder.
"Four million dollars transferred to companies you controlled.""
"Those were legitimate business expenses.""
"Three companies have no employees, no physical offices, and no recorded services.""
Thomas looked at Martin.
"You're making assumptions.""
Patricia leaned forward.
"Mr. Carter, we aren't here to debate the accounting. We're here because you've claimed to possess evidence concerning Richard Carter's death.""
Thomas nodded.
He removed a small black USB drive from his pocket.
"Richard recorded a conversation three days before he died.""
He placed it on the table.
"Listen.""
Martin connected it to his laptop.
A moment later, Richard's voice filled the room.
It was unmistakably him.
Older.
Tired.
But clear.
"If you're hearing this, Thomas, it means you didn't listen.""
There was a pause.
Then another voice.
Thomas's.
"Richard, you're making a mistake.""
The recording continued.
Richard said, "You have taken money from the trust for years.""
Thomas responded, "I kept the family together.""
"You stole from sick children.""
"I kept the business alive.""
"You stole from your own daughter.""
Silence.
Then Thomas spoke again.
"Grace was never supposed to be part of this.""
Richard's voice became sharper.
"She's your daughter. Just like Emily is mine. Why do you keep treating children like mistakes?""
I felt my throat tighten.
The recording continued.
Thomas said, "Because children complicate things.""
Richard answered, "No. Men like us complicate things. And I'm finished protecting you.""
Then came a sound.
A chair moving.
Something falling.
Thomas's voice became louder.
"You think you can destroy me?""
Richard replied:
"I think you destroyed yourself years ago.""
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Thomas.
"Is that what you wanted us to hear?""
He stared at the table.
"There's more.""
He connected another file.
This time, the recording was from the night Richard died.
The audio was unclear at first.
There was background noise.
A telephone ringing.
Then Richard's voice.
"Thomas, I want the original medication records.""
Thomas replied, "You're not thinking clearly.""
"I know exactly what you've done.""
"You're sick, Richard.""
"And you're a thief.""
A pause.
Then Richard spoke again.
"Benjamin is coming. He knows everything.""
Thomas's voice changed.
"Ben doesn't know anything.""
"He knows enough.""
Then there was a loud noise.
A chair scraping.
Richard groaning.
Thomas said something I couldn't make out.
Then the recording ended.
I stared at the laptop.
"Did Thomas give him something?""
Patricia raised her hand.
"We cannot conclude that from this recording.""
Thomas suddenly leaned forward.
"I didn't kill him.""
The words came out too quickly.
Nobody had accused him of murder.
Martin looked at him.
"Nobody said you did.""
Thomas's face went pale.
He looked at the recorder.
Then he looked at me.
"I was trying to protect the family.""
I felt anger rising.
"From what?""
"From Richard's mistakes. From the scandal. From the woman he loved. From the children he kept hidden.""
"Those children were human beings!""
Thomas slammed his palm against the table.
"And what about me? Do you think I wanted to spend my entire life cleaning up after him?""
Patricia spoke calmly.
"Mr. Carter, did you alter Richard's medication?""
Thomas stared at her.
Then he looked at the window.
"I didn't intend for him to die.""
The room went silent.
Martin slowly leaned forward.
"Explain that statement.""
Thomas rubbed his face.
"Richard had been taking medication for his heart condition. He was supposed to receive a specific dosage. I had access to his prescriptions because I helped manage his care.""
Patricia asked, "Did you change the dosage?""
Thomas swallowed.
"Yes.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because I needed him to remain confused long enough for the estate documents to be signed.""
Martin stood.
"You're admitting to deliberately altering a patient's medication?""
Thomas looked at him.
"I didn't know he would have a heart attack that night.""
Patricia immediately stopped the meeting.
She informed Thomas that the recording and his statements would be preserved and referred to the appropriate authorities.
Thomas began protesting.
But I wasn't listening anymore.
I was thinking about Richard.
About a frightened old man who had called his son because he needed help.
About Ben sitting beside his father while he died.
About the years of guilt my husband had carried because someone had convinced him that he wasn't there when it mattered.
I stood.
"Why did you tell Ben his father died thinking he was a disappointment?""
Thomas looked at me.
For a moment, he seemed unable to answer.
Then he said, "Because he was easier to control when he felt guilty.""
I felt something inside me break.
Not my heart.
Something colder.
My last remaining sympathy for the man.
When I returned to the hospital, Ben was awake.
He immediately searched my face.
"What happened?""
I sat beside him.
"Your uncle confessed to changing your father's medication.""
Ben went completely still.
"Did he...?""
"He said he didn't intend for Richard to die. The authorities will investigate everything. But he admitted that he deliberately changed the dosage.""
Ben stared at the blanket.
Then he covered his face.
For several minutes, he didn't move.
I held him.
"Your father knew you were coming, Ben.""
He began crying.
"He knew?""
I nodded.
"The recording captured him saying your name.""
Ben's shoulders shook.
"He knew I was there.""
"Yes.""
"He didn't die thinking I had abandoned him?""
I kissed his forehead.
"No. He was waiting for you.""
Ben cried harder.
And I cried with him.
Six years of guilt had finally been lifted from his shoulders.
But the truth had come at an enormous cost.
A few minutes later, Martin called.
"Emily, there's something else you need to know.""
I wiped my face.
"What now?""
"Thomas has agreed to cooperate with the investigation.""
"Good.""
"He has also provided documents concerning the second child mentioned in Richard's letter.""
I looked at Ben.
"Grace?""
"Yes. And apparently, she's been trying to contact the family for months.""
"Why?""
Martin paused.
"Because she believes Thomas stole money that was supposed to support her education and medical care.""
I felt another wave of anger.
"Where is she?""
"She's in Boston.""
"Can you arrange a meeting?""
"I already have.""
He hesitated.
"There's one complication.""
"What?""
"Grace says she has a letter from Richard. A letter written specifically to Ben.""
I looked at my husband.
"What's in it?""
Martin lowered his voice.
"She says Richard wanted Ben to know that the Carter family had another heir.""
Ben frowned.
"Who?""
Martin answered.
"Grace.""
I closed my eyes.
Another secret.
Another child.
Another person hurt by the same man who had spent his life claiming he was protecting the family.
But when Martin added one final sentence, I felt my blood turn cold.
"Emily, Grace also says she knows why Thomas was so desperate to keep you away from Richard.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard intended to leave you something much more valuable than money.""
I looked at Ben.
He reached for my hand.
And somewhere inside the hospital, a monitor began beeping faster.
Ben's nurse rushed into the room.
"Dr. Carter?""
Ben looked at her.
She checked his readings, then turned toward me.
"Emily, I need you to step outside for a moment.""
I stood immediately.
"What happened?""
"His heart rate has changed.""
Ben reached for my hand.
"Emily...""
I squeezed his fingers.
"I'm here.""
The nurse adjusted his monitor.
Then another doctor entered.
I was escorted into the corridor.
The door closed.
And for the first time since discovering the truth about Richard, I was terrified that I might lose the one person I had spent eleven years building my life around.
A few minutes later, Dr. Mitchell emerged.
Her expression was serious.
"Emily, Ben is stable for now.""
I nearly collapsed with relief.
"But we need to discuss his next treatment decision.""
She paused.
"His latest results have arrived. And they show something we weren't expecting.""
I gripped the wall.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"The cancer has changed. The treatment plan we discussed may no longer be the best option.""
Then she handed me a sealed medical report.
And beneath the test results was a handwritten note from Ben.
Emily, if things don't go the way we hope, please don't let Lily grow up believing her father gave up.
I pressed the paper against my chest.
I had spent weeks uncovering the secrets of the Carter family.

Now there was only one secret I wanted answered.
Would my husband get the chance to come home?
