Chapter 8: The Truth Thomas Never Expected Us to Find

The following morning, Ben woke with a fever.

I found him in the bathroom, leaning against the sink, his face pale and his hands trembling.

"Ben!""

He looked at me through the mirror.

"I'm okay.""

"No, you're not.""

I helped him sit down.

His breathing was shallow, and sweat covered his forehead.

I called his oncology team.

Within forty minutes, we were back at the hospital.

Dr. Mitchell examined him and ordered additional tests.

While we waited, I sat beside his bed and held his hand.

He looked at me.

"I'm sorry.""

I frowned.

"For what?""

"For bringing all this into your life.""

I almost laughed.

"Ben, we've been married for eleven years. You didn't bring your family into my life yesterday. They've been part of it since the day I married you.""

He smiled weakly.

Then his expression became serious.

"Do you think you can ever forgive me for not telling you about the cancer?""

I looked at him.

"I am angry that you kept it from me. I'm hurt that you let me believe you didn't want to come home.""

He lowered his eyes.

"But I love you. And I don't want to spend whatever time we have left punishing each other for being afraid.""

His eyes filled.

I kissed his forehead.

"Now, let the doctors take care of you.""

Dr. Mitchell returned shortly afterward.

His fever was being investigated, and she wanted him to remain under observation.

I stayed beside him until he fell asleep.

Then I stepped into the corridor and called Martin Hayes.

"We need to find Thomas.""

Martin was quiet for a moment.

"Has Eleanor spoken to you?""

"Yes.""

"Then I imagine you understand why I've been concerned.""

"I understand that he has been stealing from the trust, hiding my identity, and possibly concealing evidence about Richard's death.""

"Emily, I want you to be careful. We have financial evidence, but allegations about the circumstances of Richard's death require an independent investigation.""

"I understand.""

"There's another issue. Thomas has been trying to sell several assets belonging to the estate.""

"Can he do that?""

"Not without authorization. The sale may be an attempt to move assets before the trust is formally audited.""

I looked through the glass toward Ben's room.

"Then we need to stop him.""

Martin agreed to arrange an emergency meeting with the estate trustees.

Before hanging up, he added:

"There's one more document your father-in-law left behind. I found it this morning in a separate archive.""

"What is it?""

"A copy of an insurance policy.""

I frowned.

"Whose insurance policy?""

"Thomas's.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Martin continued.

"Richard had apparently discovered that Thomas had taken out a substantial policy on his life several months before his death.""

I went cold.

"Was Thomas the beneficiary?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"How much?""

"Five million dollars.""

By lunchtime, the hospital had received confirmation that Ben's fever was being managed, and his condition had stabilized.

He was exhausted but alert.

I told him about the insurance policy.

He stared at me.

"Five million?""

I nodded.

"Martin thinks your father discovered it before he died.""

Ben looked toward the window.

"Thomas told us Dad's life insurance had been used to settle estate debts.""

"Apparently, that wasn't true.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"How much more did he lie about?""

I didn't answer.

Because we were about to find out.

At four o'clock, Martin called.

"The trustees have agreed to freeze all disputed transactions pending an audit.""

I exhaled.

"Good.""

"However, Thomas has requested an emergency meeting with the family.""

"Why?""

"He claims he has information that could invalidate the inheritance provision.""

I looked at Ben.

He was watching me.

"What information?""

Martin hesitated.

"He claims Richard was not your biological father.""

I stared at the phone.

"What?""

"Thomas says he has evidence that Claire was involved with another man when you were conceived.""

My stomach dropped.

Ben slowly sat up.

"That's impossible.""

Martin continued.

"I don't know whether the allegation is true. But Thomas intends to use it to challenge your position as a beneficiary.""

I looked at Ben.

He shook his head.

"My father knew Emily was his daughter.""

"Then we need proof," Martin said.

I remembered Eleanor.

The letters.

The photograph.

The years of secrecy.

"What about a DNA test?""

Martin paused.

"That would help establish the biological relationship, but the legal consequences would depend on the documents and applicable inheritance law.""

Ben looked at me.

"Do you want to do it?""

I nodded.

"I want the truth.""

The next day, Martin arranged for a private DNA test using preserved samples from Richard's medical records and a cheek swab from me.

The process was handled independently.

While we waited for the result, Thomas arrived at the hospital.

He walked into Ben's room wearing a dark suit and an expensive watch.

He carried a bouquet of white lilies.

"Benjamin.""

Ben looked at him without moving.

"Get out.""

Thomas placed the flowers on the table.

"I heard you've been unwell.""

"Don't pretend.""

Thomas sighed.

"You're still angry about your father's estate.""

Ben gave a short laugh.

"Four million dollars disappeared, Uncle Thomas. I think anger is reasonable.""

Thomas pulled a chair closer.

"Your father was not a well man. He became paranoid near the end.""

I stepped between them.

"Did you steal from the charitable trust?""

Thomas looked at me.

His expression changed.

"Emily. You've become very involved in matters that don't concern you.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"My biological father was Richard Carter. I think that makes this very much my concern.""

Thomas stared at me.

Then he smiled.

"Has Eleanor been filling your head with stories?""

"She told us what you did.""

"That woman is old and confused.""

Ben leaned forward.

"Did you know who Emily was before we met?""

Thomas's smile disappeared.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked at Ben.

"Yes.""

The single word seemed to drain the air from the room.

Ben stared at him.

"You knew?""

"Your father told me about her.""

"And you said nothing?""

Thomas shrugged.

"She was raised elsewhere. Your father had made his choices.""

"She was my sister.""

Thomas looked at me.

"Half-sister, if the documents are even accurate.""

I stepped closer.

"Why did you hide me?""

He adjusted his cuff.

"Because your father was about to make an enormous mistake. He wanted to rewrite the estate arrangements and give away assets to someone he barely knew.""

"Someone he knew was his daughter.""

"Someone who had never been part of the family.""

Ben's voice rose.

"She was part of the family whether you liked it or not!""

Thomas stood.

"And what would you have preferred? That your father destroy everything he'd built for a woman who had spent her entire life away from him?""

I stared at him.

"He wanted to find me.""

"He wanted to make himself feel better.""

Thomas picked up his coat.

"Benjamin, you have enough problems. Focus on your treatment. Let the adults handle the estate.""

Ben looked at him.

"You're the reason my father died believing I had abandoned him.""

Thomas froze.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"Be careful what you accuse me of.""

He turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked directly at me.

"Some truths are better left buried, Emily.""

I felt a strange calm settle over me.

"Then you'll be disappointed.""

He stopped.

I held up my phone.

The entire conversation had been recorded.

For the first time, Thomas looked afraid.

That evening, Martin arrived with the preliminary DNA results.

Ben was asleep when he entered the room.

I stood beside the window.

Martin placed an envelope on the table.

"The laboratory has confirmed the result.""

My heart pounded.

I opened it.

The report was clear.

The probability of biological paternity between Richard Carter and me was greater than 99.99 percent.

I sat down.

For thirty-five years, I'd wondered who my father was.

Now I knew.

I pressed the report against my chest.

Ben woke to the sound of my crying.

"Emily?""

I handed him the paper.

He read it.

Then he looked at me.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Finally, he reached for my hand.

"You're my sister.""

I nodded.

He began to cry.

"I wish Dad had been able to tell us.""

I leaned toward him.

"So do I.""

Martin cleared his throat.

"There's something else.""

He placed a second document beside the DNA report.

It was a notice from the estate trustees.

Thomas had been formally suspended from managing the trust.

But beneath the notice was a handwritten message from Thomas's attorney.

Mr. Carter requests an immediate private meeting with Emily Carter. He claims he has evidence that Richard's death was not accidental.

I looked at Ben.

Then at Martin.

"What kind of evidence?""

Martin's expression was grave.

"Thomas says he knows who changed Richard's medication.""

And for the first time, I wondered whether the man who had spent years destroying our family was finally preparing to confess.

Or whether he had one last lie left.
