Chapter 9: The Truth I Was Never Meant To Know
The words hit harder than anything I had heard that day.
He tried to kill her because she found out what he did to you.
I stared at my grandmother.
My hands tightened around the envelope.
“What did he do?””
Nobody answered.
Not my mother.
Not Daniel.
Not even my grandmother.
The silence terrified me more than the accusations against Marcus.
Because this wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about insurance.
It was about me.
My mother stepped closer.
“Lena…”
I looked at her.
“Tell me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
The anger inside me burned.
“Everyone keeps saying they were afraid.””
My voice cracked.
“But I was the one living there.””
My mother reached for my hand.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The words came out sharper than I intended.
“You all knew something was wrong. You all knew Marcus was dangerous. And I was sleeping in that house every night thinking I was safe.””
My mother looked devastated.
Because she knew I was right.
My grandmother sat down slowly.
“Before your mother’s accident, Marcus discovered something.””
Daniel opened the folder.
“The school records?””
My grandmother nodded.
I looked between them.
“What school records?””
She took a deep breath.
“When you were fifteen, you found evidence of Marcus hiding money.””
I frowned.
“I don’t remember that.””
“You wouldn’t.””
My grandmother looked at me sadly.
“Because he made sure you forgot.””
The room became still.
My heart started racing.
“What does that mean?””
My mother stepped forward.
“Lena, after your father’s business partner disappeared, you found a hidden file in his office.””
A memory flashed.
A locked drawer.
A red folder.
My teenage hands opening it while looking for my old birth certificate.
“I remember.””
My voice lowered.
“There were bank papers.””
Daniel nodded.
“Documents showing Marcus had been moving money through fake companies.””
My stomach twisted.
“I told him.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
I remembered that night.
Marcus sitting me down.
His calm voice.
His hand on my shoulder.
“You’re confused, sweetheart. You saw something you didn’t understand.””
Then Vanessa gave me a glass of water.
Then I woke up the next morning.
And I couldn’t remember what happened after that.
I looked at my mother.
“She drugged me.””
My mother nodded.
“The medication caused memory loss. Not permanent. But enough.””
My blood went cold.
“They erased it.””
My grandmother whispered:
“They erased the evidence.””
Daniel added quietly:
“And when your mother found out what happened, she threatened to expose them.””
I looked at the envelope.
“Thomas helped her.””
My mother nodded.
“Thomas discovered the brake tampering. He also found the documents showing Marcus and Vanessa were involved.””
“Then why didn’t he go to the police?””
My grandmother looked away.
“Because Marcus had already prepared for that.””
The door behind us suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A police officer stood there.
“Ms. Carter?””
My mother stood.
“Yes?””
“We found Vanessa.””
Everyone froze.
“Where?””
The officer hesitated.
“At the old Carter residence.””
My stomach dropped.
“My house?””
He nodded.
“She was waiting there.””
My mother immediately grabbed my hand.
“We need to go.””
But the officer stopped her.
“There’s more.””
His expression changed.
“She wasn’t alone.””
The room became silent.
“Who was with her?””
The officer looked at me.
“Your father.””
My heart sank.
Marcus.
Still there.
Still controlling everything.
The officer continued.
“We received a call from inside the house.””
“From who?””
He looked down.
“The caller didn’t identify himself.””
A terrible feeling crawled through me.
“What did they say?””
The officer swallowed.
“They said, ‘Bring Lena here. She deserves to know the truth.’”
My mother stepped forward.
“No.””
She grabbed my shoulders.
“You’re not going.””
I looked at her.
“But I need answers.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You don’t understand. That house is where everything started.””
I looked at the envelope in my hand.
At the confession.
At the years stolen from us.
Then I looked at my mother.
“I spent three years believing you abandoned me.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
“I need to finish this.””
She stared at me.
Then slowly nodded.
“Then I’m coming with you.””
As we walked toward the exit, my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
One final warning.
*Your mother told you who she thinks betrayed her. Now ask her what she’s still hiding.*
I stopped.
My mother noticed.
“What is it?””
I looked at the message.
Then at her.
Because suddenly, one question appeared in my mind.
May you like
If my mother had been hiding from Marcus for three years…
Why had she chosen today to come back?
