Chapter 10: The Family I Chose
The Carter house looked exactly the same.
That was the cruelest part.
The same white walls.
The same perfectly trimmed garden.
The same front door where Marcus used to kiss my forehead before I went to school.
A place that once felt like home.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
Police surrounded the property.
My mother stood beside me, staring at the house.
“I never thought I’d come back here.””
I looked at her.
“Why today?””
She didn’t answer.
Not immediately.
Then she said:
“Because today was the first day I knew you were old enough to hear the truth.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Your father spent years convincing you I abandoned you. I knew if I came back too soon, he would convince you I was dangerous.””
My eyes filled.
“So you waited?””
“I survived.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I waited for the moment when you could decide for yourself.””
Before I could answer, the front door opened.
Marcus stepped outside.
He looked exhausted.
Older.
Smaller.
The man who once controlled everything now looked like he had lost control of his entire world.
“Lena.””
I walked forward.
My mother grabbed my arm.
But I shook my head.
“I need to hear him.””
Marcus looked at me.
“I never wanted this.””
I almost laughed.
“Never wanted what? Killing Mom?””
His face changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Or maybe just fear.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You made choices.””
Vanessa appeared behind him.
She looked different too.
No designer clothes.
No perfect smile.
Just a scared woman.
“Lena, please.””
I looked at her.
“You helped him.””
She cried.
“I was trapped.””
My mother stepped forward.
“Everyone says that after they hurt someone.””
Marcus looked at my mother.
“You don’t know what I was protecting.””
My voice became cold.
“Then tell me.””
He looked at me.
For a moment, I saw the father I remembered.
Then it disappeared.
“Your mother was going to destroy everything.””
“Your crimes?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“The truth.””
I felt a chill.
“What truth?””
Marcus looked at my mother.
She looked away.
And I knew.
There was still one secret.
“Mom?””
She closed her eyes.
“I found out Marcus wasn’t your biological father.””
The world stopped.
I stared at her.
“What?””
Marcus looked furious.
“Don’t.””
My mother continued.
“I discovered it while investigating the financial records.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Who is?””
She looked toward the driveway.
A man stood there.
Older.
Gray hair.
Tears in his eyes.
Thomas Reed.
Alive.
He slowly walked toward us.
“I am.””
Nobody spoke.
The man who had been dead for three years was standing in front of me.
My entire life had been built on lies.
Thomas looked at me.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I shook my head.
“So everyone knew except me?””
“No,” my mother said quickly.
“I didn’t know until after the accident.””
Thomas looked at Marcus.
“That’s why he wanted her gone.””
Marcus’s expression collapsed.
Because the truth was finally out.
He hadn’t just wanted my mother dead.
He wanted to erase the one person who could expose him.
And he wanted to keep me believing he was my father.
The police moved forward.
Marcus didn’t fight.
Maybe he was tired.
Maybe he finally understood there was nowhere left to run.
Months later, the truth became public.
Marcus and Vanessa were convicted for their crimes.
My grandmother testified.
Daniel released every document he had saved.
Thomas finally got to tell his story.
And my mother?
She moved into a small house near the ocean.
A place where nobody knew our past.
A place where we could start over.
One evening, we sat outside watching the sunset.
“I’m sorry,” she said quietly.
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For missing so much.””
I smiled sadly.
“You came back.””
She held my hand.
“I should have fought harder.””
“Maybe.””
She looked down.
“But we’re here now.””
I looked at the ocean.
For years, I thought family was the people who shared your last name.
The people who lived under your roof.
The people who promised they would never leave.
I was wrong.
Family was the person who searched for you when everyone else wanted you forgotten.
Family was the person who survived just to tell you the truth.
My mother came back from the dead.
She brought evidence.
She exposed the people who betrayed us.
But the greatest thing she gave me wasn’t the truth.
It was a chance to choose who I wanted beside me.
May you like
And for the first time in years…
I finally chose my family.
