Chapter 9: The Warehouse

I knew better than to go alone.

But Ryan knew exactly what to say to make me afraid.

Emma.

Her safety.

Her name was the hook he had buried deepest inside me.

Detective Harris took my phone.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I'm going.””

“Not alone.””

“He'll know if there's police.””

“Then we make sure he doesn't know.””

We traced the message.

An abandoned warehouse district near the river.

The kind of place where nobody asked questions.

Harris assembled a small team.

I stayed in the unmarked car until they gave the signal.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

“Claire,” Harris said through the radio, “whatever happens, don't negotiate.””

“What if Emma is involved?””

“She isn't here.””

“How do you know?””

“We've confirmed she's at school.””

I exhaled.

For the first time in an hour, I could breathe.

Then the warehouse lights came on.

One by one.

A door opened.

Ryan stepped outside.

He looked exhausted.

He was holding the white envelope from the photograph.

I got out of the car.

“Claire!””

Harris's voice came through my earpiece.

“Stay where you are.””

I kept walking.

Ryan raised both hands.

“I'm not armed.””

“Where's Daniel?””

“Inside.””

“Where is the file?””

He held up the envelope.

“Here.””

I stopped.

“You threatened my daughter.””

“I never touched her.””

“You let someone photograph her.””

“I didn't know he did that.””

“You knew about Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“You used my company.””

“Yes.””

“You forged my signature.””

Ryan looked down.

“Yes.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

“Why?””

“Because I was desperate.””

“Desperate enough to destroy me?””

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“You were going to take my company.””

“I wasn't going to keep it.””

“What?””

Ryan looked toward the warehouse.

“Daniel was going to take control. I just needed to make him believe the paperwork was real.””

“So you were using me to trick him?””

“Yes.””

“And the insurance?””

“I thought it was collateral.””

“Collateral for what?””

“My debt.””

I stared at him.

“How much do you owe?””

Ryan looked away.

“Over four hundred thousand.””

My stomach dropped.

“And you thought a wedding would solve it?””

“Daniel promised investors would pay everything.””

“Who are these investors?””

Ryan didn't answer.

“Ryan.””

“They're not investors.””

The night suddenly felt colder.

“What are they?””

He swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“They buy companies.””

I frowned.

“Legitimate companies?””

“No.””

Harris stepped closer behind me.

Ryan noticed him.

His face changed.

“You brought police.””

“Yes.””

He looked almost relieved.

“I knew you would.””

“You wanted me to?””

“I wanted someone to stop this.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn't you go to the police?””

“Because Daniel threatened Mom and Dad.””

My anger faltered.

“What?””

“He knew where they lived.””

“That's why the house was broken into?””

Ryan nodded.

“Daniel was looking for the original documents.””

“Why?””

“Because they prove the transfer was fraudulent.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What's inside?””

“The real contract.””

I held out my hand.

Ryan didn't move.

“First, I need to tell you something.””

“What?””

“Mom wasn't lying when she said she didn't know everything.””

“What does that mean?””

Ryan's eyes filled with shame.

“She knew about the money.””

I clenched my jaw.

“But she didn't know about the insurance.””

“What about Dad?””

“He didn't know anything.””

“And Vanessa?””

“I never wanted her involved.””

“Yet you lied to her.””

“Yes.””

“About me.””

“Yes.””

“About Emma.””

Ryan looked down.

“I was jealous.””

I almost couldn't believe it.

“Jealous of a five-year-old?””

“No.””

He rubbed his face.

“Jealous of you.””

I stared at him.

“You had a business. A daughter. A life.””

“And you wanted it?””

“I wanted to be the successful one.””

“You were.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“Everyone thought I was.””

He looked at the warehouse.

“I kept borrowing money because I couldn't admit I'd failed.””

“And instead of admitting it, you built a fake life.””

“Yes.””

“And almost destroyed mine.””

“Yes.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Ryan handed me the envelope.

“Take it.””

I opened it.

Inside was the original contract.

My signature appeared only once.

At the bottom of a legitimate catering agreement.

Everything else had been added later.

But there was another document attached.

A handwritten ledger.

Names.

Amounts.

Dates.

I recognized several family members.

Aunt Margaret.

Two cousins.

My parents.

And at the bottom—

My name.

Next to it was:

*$75,000 — already transferred.*

I stared at Ryan.

“I never received this.””

“I know.””

“Where did it go?””

He looked toward the warehouse.

“Daniel took it.””

I turned to Harris.

Before anyone could move, a light flicked on inside the building.

A man's voice echoed through the darkness.

“Ryan.””

Ryan went rigid.

Daniel stepped into view.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm expression.

The same man from the photograph.

He smiled.

“Your sister came.””

Harris immediately drew his weapon.

“Daniel Mercer! Don't move!””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You're too late.””

He held up a phone.

On the screen was a live video feed.

My parents' house.

Then another angle.

Emma's school.

My blood turned to ice.

Daniel looked directly at me.

“You should have stayed out of your brother's business.””

I stepped forward.

“What do you want?””

“Your company.””

“You're not getting it.””

He smiled.

“Actually, Claire…”

He lifted another document.

“…you already gave it to me.””

I stared at the page.

My signature was at the bottom.

But this time, it wasn't forged.

I recognized it.

I had signed it.

Three weeks earlier.

I just hadn't known what it was.

Daniel smiled wider.

“And your mother knows exactly why.””

I turned toward Mom's house in the distance.

My phone buzzed.

A message appeared from Vanessa.

*Claire, I found the missing page.*

Then:

*Your mother didn't just know about the first payment.*

May you like

A second message arrived.

*She signed it too.*
