Chapter 4: The Policy

For several seconds, I couldn't make sense of Vanessa's message.

A life insurance policy.

My name.

As the beneficiary.

I read it again, hoping I had misunderstood.

I hadn't.

“Claire?”” Margaret asked.

I handed her my phone.

She read the messages, then looked at me.

“Do you know anything about a life insurance policy?””

“No.””

“Have you ever signed anything related to one?””

“No.””

“Has Ryan ever mentioned it?””

“Never.””

My voice sounded strangely calm.

Inside, everything was moving too fast.

Yesterday, I had been angry because my brother humiliated my daughter.

This morning, I had discovered forged contracts, hundreds of thousands of dollars in supposed financial obligations, and a wedding he had nearly destroyed.

Now there was a life insurance policy with my name attached to it.

Margaret's phone rang.

She stepped away to answer.

I immediately texted Vanessa.

*Where are you?*

Her response came less than a minute later.

*My parents' hotel. Room 814.*

Then:

*Please come alone.*

I looked at Margaret.

“I need to go.””

She nodded.

“Before you do, Claire, don't sign anything.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“And don't confront Ryan until you know exactly what you're dealing with.””

I looked at the black folder under my arm.

“I think I already know.””

“No,” Margaret said quietly.

“I think you know something is wrong. That's different.””

She was right.

I drove to the hotel with my hands tight around the steering wheel.

Every traffic light seemed too long.

Every passing car reminded me of how normal the world looked when mine suddenly didn't.

When I reached room 814, Vanessa opened the door only after checking through the peephole.

She looked nothing like the polished bride I had seen at family dinners.

Her mascara was smeared.

Her engagement ring was still on her finger.

But her face had gone pale.

“Come in.””

I stepped inside.

Her parents weren't there.

“Where are they?””

“I sent them downstairs.””

“Why?””

“Because I didn't know who I could trust.””

That sentence stayed between us.

Vanessa locked the door.

Then she walked to the desk and picked up a thick envelope.

“I found this in Ryan's home office.””

She handed it to me.

The name on the front was mine.

*CLAIRE BENNETT*

I opened it.

Inside was an insurance application.

The insured person was Ryan Bennett.

The beneficiary was Claire Bennett.

The policy value was $500,000.

My hands went numb.

“When was this taken out?””

“Three weeks ago.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you sign this?””

“No.””

“Did Ryan?””

“He signed some of it.””

I looked at the signature.

It was his.

“Why would he make me the beneficiary?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you tell me about it?””

She swallowed.

“Because I found another document.””

She reached into the envelope.

It was a photocopy of a financial statement.

Several transfers were highlighted.

My company account appeared in the records.

So did Ryan's.

“What am I looking at?””

“Money moving between accounts.””

I scanned the page.

My eyes stopped on one number.

$75,000.

“What is this?””

“That money came from your business account.””

My stomach turned.

“I never authorized that.””

“I know.””

“Who did?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know. But Ryan told me your company was helping finance the wedding.””

“That doesn't explain a withdrawal.””

“He said you'd agreed.””

“I didn't.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I believed him.””

“You shouldn't have.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know now.””

She pulled out her phone.

“There's more.””

A recording appeared on the screen.

“Where did you get that?””

“Ryan left his phone connected to our home computer.””

She pressed play.

Ryan's voice filled the hotel room.

“Once the wedding is over, Claire won't have a choice. She's already on the paperwork.””

Another male voice asked, “What if she refuses?””

Ryan laughed.

“She won't. Mom will handle her.””

My heart pounded.

The recording continued.

“And if she gets difficult?””

Ryan's voice became colder.

“Then the insurance takes care of the rest.””

Vanessa stopped the recording.

Neither of us spoke.

I could hear the air conditioner humming.

“What does that mean?”” I whispered.

“I don't know.””

“You recorded this?””

“No. It was already on the computer.””

I stared at the phone.

“Who was he talking to?””

“I don't know.””

I stood.

“I need to leave.””

Vanessa grabbed my wrist.

“Claire.””

I turned.

“I didn't know what he was planning.””

“What do you mean?””

“I thought he was trying to pressure you into paying for the wedding.””

“What else would he be planning?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Then she pulled another paper from the envelope.

“This is why I contacted you.””

I took it.

It was a medical questionnaire attached to the insurance application.

One question had been marked in blue ink.

*Has the proposed insured experienced any recent medical condition, diagnosis, or hospitalization?*

The answer was:

*No.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

“Yes.””

“Does Ryan have a medical condition?””

“Not that I know of.””

I stared at the form.

Then I noticed the date.

The policy had been submitted three weeks ago.

The same week Ryan had asked me to sign several wedding documents.

The same week he had started moving money around.

My mind raced.

“Vanessa, did Ryan ever ask me to sign something without explaining what it was?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About three weeks ago.””

“What was it?””

“He said it was a vendor authorization.””

My heart stopped.

“What did I sign?””

“I don't know.””

I pulled out my phone and searched through my emails.

There it was.

A PDF Ryan had sent me.

*Wedding Vendor Authorization — Signature Required*

I had signed it without reading every page.

I opened the attachment.

Page one looked normal.

Page two was catering.

Page three listed vendors.

Page four—

My blood ran cold.

*Authorized Financial Representative and Beneficiary Designation.*

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I hadn't signed that page separately.

I had signed the entire document electronically.

Someone had inserted additional pages afterward.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

I stared at my forged signature.

Ryan hadn't simply been careless.

He had built a paper trail.

A trail that made it look like I had willingly accepted financial responsibility for his wedding.

And somehow, the insurance policy was part of it.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

This time from Ryan.

*Mom says you're refusing to help. Don't make this ugly, Claire.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*You signed everything. You know what happens if you back out now.*

I showed Vanessa.

Her face drained of color.

“Claire…”

“What?””

She pointed at the final message.

“You need to read the next one.””

May you like

My phone buzzed again.

*I wouldn't want Emma dragged into this.*
