Chapter 4: The Condition
I read the sentence twice.
Then a third time.
It didn't become easier.
*If Derek marries while Emma is still a minor, his spouse shall have no claim to the family trust. Upon Derek's death, controlling interest transfers directly to Emma.*
I looked up.
Vanessa wouldn't meet my eyes.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
The comments.
The resentment.
The constant complaints that Emma was "too dependent" on me.
Vanessa hadn't simply disliked sharing my attention.
She had discovered that my daughter stood between her and something she wanted.
"What did you think would happen?"" I asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
"Derek, you're misunderstanding this.""
"Then explain it.""
"I didn't know about that.""
Rachel laughed once.
It wasn't amusement.
It was disbelief.
"You showed me a photograph of that exact document.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Shut up.""
Rachel's face hardened.
"There she is.""
Richard stepped between them.
"Vanessa, answer him.""
She looked around.
Two hundred wedding guests had become witnesses.
"You want me to explain private financial matters in front of everyone?""
I almost laughed.
"You smashed cake into my daughter's face in front of everyone.""
"Derek—"
"No. Explain.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
For a moment, the old version of Vanessa appeared.
The soft voice.
The trembling lip.
The woman who could make me question my own instincts.
"I was scared," she whispered.
"Of my six-year-old?""
"Of losing you.""
"You weren't trying to keep me.""
I lifted the trust document.
"You were trying to remove her.""
Gasps moved through the room.
Vanessa's face twisted.
"I never tried to remove Emma.""
Rachel opened her phone.
"Should I play it?""
Vanessa spun around.
"Don't you dare.""
Rachel looked at me.
"You need to hear this.""
She tapped the screen.
Vanessa's recorded voice filled the ballroom.
"I don't need him to stop loving the kid. I just need him to understand she'll be happier somewhere else.""
My stomach dropped.
Then Rachel's voice from the recording:
"Where?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Boarding school. His mother. Anywhere.""
The recording stopped.
I couldn't speak.
Marcus muttered, "Jesus.""
Vanessa looked desperate.
"I was drunk.""
Rachel shook her head.
"You said it again two weeks later.""
"Because you kept pushing me!""
"I was trying to figure out whether you were serious.""
Vanessa pointed at her.
"You've always been jealous of me.""
Rachel didn't react.
"Play the next one?"" she asked me.
Vanessa's father stepped forward.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
Richard's face had gone gray.
"Enough.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Dad?""
He looked devastated.
"I didn't raise you to do this.""
Her expression hardened.
"Don't pretend you're better than me.""
Richard flinched.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"You knew I was worried about the trust.""
"I knew you were asking questions about a prenup. That's all.""
"No, Dad. You told me to protect myself.""
"I meant legally!""
"You said marriage is a transaction.""
Richard looked around at the guests.
"I never told you to target a child.""
Vanessa's mask finally slipped.
"Target her?""
She pointed toward the hallway.
"Everything is always Emma!""
The room became silent.
Vanessa didn't stop.
"Every vacation has to work around Emma. Every dinner has to be something Emma likes. Every plan changes because Emma is tired, sick, scared, or wants Daddy!""
I stared at her.
"She's six.""
"I know how old she is!""
Her voice cracked across the ballroom.
And there it was.
The truth.
Not hidden inside messages.
Not whispered to Rachel.
Spoken in front of everyone.
"She has you wrapped around her finger," Vanessa said.
"And everyone acts like I'm evil because I wanted one day that wasn't about her.""
"You pushed a cake into her face.""
"Because she wouldn't listen!""
My jaw tightened.
"What did she do?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"What did my daughter do that deserved that?""
"She touched the cake.""
A voice came from behind us.
"No, she didn't.""
We turned.
The wedding photographer stood near the edge of the dance floor.
His camera hung against his chest.
Vanessa stared at him.
"What?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"I photographed the whole thing.""
My heart started pounding.
He lifted the camera but didn't show the screen.
"I was shooting continuously before it happened.""
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"Delete them.""
He frowned.
"No.""
"I am paying you.""
"Derek hired me.""
Vanessa looked at me.
I looked at the photographer.
"What happened?""
He swallowed.
"Emma wasn't touching the cake.""
Vanessa's face went white.
"She was standing beside it.""
"What was she doing?""
The photographer hesitated.
Then he answered.
"She was holding something.""
I thought about Emma's empty hands when I reached her.
"What?""
"A little gift box.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
My stomach turned.
"Where is it?""
Nobody answered.
Then a young server near the cake table slowly raised her hand.
"I saw Mrs. Bennett pick it up.""
Mrs. Bennett was Vanessa's mother.
Every person in the ballroom turned.
Vanessa's mother stood near the back wall.
She had been silent through everything.
Now she looked trapped.
"Mom?"" Vanessa whispered.
I walked toward her.
"What was in the box?""
Mrs. Bennett clutched her purse.
"I don't know.""
"Where is it?""
"I threw it away.""
"Why?""
She looked at Vanessa.
That was enough.
"Get it," I said.
"Derek—"
"Get my daughter's gift.""
The server hurried toward the kitchen.
Vanessa started backing toward the exit.
Marcus noticed.
"Where are you going?""
"I need air.""
"No," I said.
She stopped.
Minutes later, the server returned carrying a small pink box stained with frosting.
My name was written across the top in Emma's uneven handwriting.
I opened it.
Inside was a handmade bracelet.
Pink beads.
Blue beads.
And plastic letters spelling:
*DADDY + EMMA*
Underneath was a folded drawing.
Three stick figures stood beneath a giant heart.
Me.
Emma.
Vanessa.
At the bottom, in shaky six-year-old handwriting, Emma had written:
*NOW WE ARE A FAMILY.*
For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.
Then something slipped from behind the drawing.
A second piece of paper.
Not made by Emma.
Typed.
Folded twice.
I opened it.
The first line contained my daughter's full name.
The second contained the name of a private boarding school in another state.
And at the bottom was a scheduled enrollment date.
Three days after our honeymoon.
My eyes moved to the signature line.
May you like
Someone had already signed my name.
It wasn't me.
