Chapter 2: The Secret in My Pocket

Three months earlier, I believed I had finally found someone who understood my life.

After Emma's mother passed away, I spent years learning how to be both parents.

I learned how to braid hair from online videos.

I learned which bedtime stories made her laugh.

I learned that a child could ask the same question twenty times and still deserve a patient answer every single time.

Then Vanessa came into our lives.

At first, she seemed perfect.

She brought Emma little gifts.

She helped her choose clothes.

She sat beside her during movie nights and told me, "I love how much she trusts me.""

Those words meant everything.

I wanted to believe Emma would have another person protecting her.

But small things started changing.

Nothing big enough to accuse someone over.

Nothing obvious enough for anyone else to notice.

Just small moments.

The way Vanessa would sigh when Emma interrupted conversations.

The way she would smile at guests but become cold the second they left.

The way she started saying things like, "She needs to learn that the world doesn't revolve around her.""

I ignored it.

I told myself I was being paranoid.

I told myself I was afraid of losing another person I loved.

Until the night I found the truth.

Two weeks before the wedding, I came home early from work.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked toward the kitchen and heard Vanessa talking.

Not to Emma.

About Emma.

I stopped before entering.

"She has you completely fooled," Vanessa said.

My heart started racing.

I looked through the doorway.

Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table with her sister, Claire.

Emma was upstairs.

"He's never going to believe you care about him more than her," Claire said.

Vanessa laughed.

"Please. I'm not trying to replace her mother.""

There was a pause.

Then Vanessa lowered her voice.

"I'm just making sure she knows her place.""

I felt like the air disappeared from the room.

I should have walked in.

I should have confronted her.

But I stood there, listening.

Because I needed to know how far this went.

Claire looked nervous.

"Vanessa, she's just a child.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Exactly. Children adjust.""

That night, after everyone went to sleep, I searched through old messages, emails, and conversations.

I found enough to understand what was happening.

Vanessa had complained about Emma for months.

She had written that my daughter was "a problem.""

She had told friends she couldn't wait until Emma "became less attached" to me.

And then I found something worse.

A message from Vanessa sent the week before our engagement.

A message that made my hands shake.

She wasn't planning to build a family with us.

She was planning to change it.

I printed everything.

I folded the pages.

And I kept them inside my jacket.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed proof.

I wanted to believe I was wrong.

I wanted Vanessa to prove me wrong.

But at the wedding, when she pushed cake into my daughter's face and blamed her for it, I finally had my answer.

I held Emma close as I looked at Vanessa.

"Do you want to explain this?"" I asked.

Her eyes moved from the paper to the guests around us.

Suddenly, she wasn't confident anymore.

"Derek," she whispered, using my name like a warning.

I unfolded the paper completely.

Marcus stepped closer.

"What is that?"" he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"Nothing. It's private.""

I looked around the room.

"Private?""

My voice echoed through the ballroom.

"This woman just humiliated my daughter in front of everyone here.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

She looked at the guests.

Then back at me.

"You are really going to destroy our wedding over a misunderstanding?""

I stared at her.

"Before I answer that...""

I held up the paper.

"I want everyone to hear what you wrote about my daughter.""

Vanessa's face turned pale.

But before I could read the first line, my phone suddenly started ringing.

The screen lit up with a name I never expected to see.

A person who had been silent for years.

A person connected to the secret Vanessa thought she had buried forever.

I looked at the name.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

May you like

And when she saw who was calling, she whispered four words that made the entire room turn cold.

"Don't answer that call.""
