Chapter 6: The Phone Call

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom remained black.

My phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Michael whispered, “Mom, don't answer that.””

I stared at the glowing screen.

Daniel Cole.

Dead for nine years.

Calling me at his daughter's wedding.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

“Linda.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Daniel.””

Michael grabbed my arm.

“What did he say?””

I raised one hand.

Daniel chuckled softly.

“I knew you'd recognize me.””

“You have five seconds to tell me why you're calling.””

“Still direct.””

“Four.””

“I want you to listen.””

“Three.””

“Your son is in danger.””

Michael's face changed.

Daniel continued.

“Not from Sabrina.””

I looked at her.

She was crying silently.

“Then from whom?””

“From the people who helped me build everything.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did you build?””

“A network.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

Everyone's faces appeared in the dim red glow.

Daniel said, “Your son married into it.””

Michael stepped closer.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Explain.””

Daniel laughed.

“You've always been suspicious of me.””

“You stole from me.””

“I borrowed.””

“You forged documents.””

“I survived.””

“You destroyed families.””

“I made money.””

His voice was calm.

Almost bored.

“That's what people like us do, Linda.””

“I am nothing like you.””

“No?””

He paused.

“Then why did you spend twenty years building the exact same kind of empire?””

My jaw tightened.

“I built legitimate businesses.””

“You built power.””

“And you wanted it.””

“I wanted access to it.””

Michael stared at the phone.

“What do you want?””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said, “Hello, Michael.””

Michael's face went pale.

“You know my name.””

“I've known your name since before Sabrina met you.””

Sabrina covered her mouth.

Michael looked at her.

“You told him about me?””

“I had to.””

“Why?””

Daniel answered for her.

“Because you were the key.””

“The key to what?””

“To your mother's estate.””

I felt something shift inside me.

Daniel continued.

“Linda has spent decades accumulating assets. Businesses. Properties.

Investment accounts. Private holdings.””

Michael shook his head.

“You wanted Mom's money?””

“Not wanted.””

Daniel corrected himself.

“Needed.””

“For what?””

“Debt.””

James stepped forward.

“How much?””

Daniel laughed.

“Enough that $22 million would barely make a dent.””

Sabrina suddenly whispered, “Dad, stop.””

Daniel's voice sharpened.

“You don't tell me when to stop.””

She flinched.

Michael turned toward her.

“That's who you've been protecting me from?””

“Yes.””

“By helping him?””

“I was trapped.””

Daniel interrupted.

“You were ambitious.””

“I was scared.””

“You were greedy.””

Sabrina began sobbing.

Michael looked at her as though he no longer recognized his wife.

I felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

Then Daniel said something that changed everything.

“Linda, your son didn't sign that penthouse contract.””

“I know.””

“You're missing the point.””

“What point?””

“His signature wasn't forged.””

Michael stared at the phone.

“What?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Someone used a valid digital authorization.””

James went still.

“That's impossible.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“It's very possible.””

I looked at James.

“What does that mean?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“It means someone had access to Michael's authentication device.””

Michael reached into his pocket.

His phone was gone.

He searched his jacket.

Nothing.

His face changed.

“I had it this morning.””

Sabrina looked at him.

“I don't have it.””

“Where is my phone?””

“I don't know.””

James said quietly, “When did you last see it?””

Michael thought.

“At the church.””

He looked toward Sabrina.

“You had it.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You were holding my jacket.””

“I was fixing your boutonnière.””

Michael suddenly remembered.

“During the photographs.””

Sabrina stared at him.

“That doesn't mean anything.””

“It means you had access.””

“I didn't take it.””

Daniel laughed.

“Stop fighting.””

Michael snapped, “Shut up!””

Silence.

Daniel's voice became almost gentle.

“Michael, check your wedding ring.””

Michael frowned.

“What?””

“Take it off.””

Michael looked at the gold band on his finger.

He pulled.

Nothing happened.

Then he noticed a tiny black mark inside the band.

James stepped forward.

“Don't touch it.””

Michael froze.

“What is it?””

Daniel said, “A tracking device.””

Sabrina stared at the ring.

“No.””

Daniel laughed again.

“You thought I would let my daughter marry a man without knowing where he was?””

Michael ripped the ring from his finger and threw it across the room.

It struck the marble floor.

The tiny device blinked red.

Detective Morgan immediately stepped toward it.

Then every phone in the ballroom began vibrating.

Hundreds of screens lit up at once.

A message had been sent to every guest.

No number.

No name.

Just a photograph.

I looked at the nearest screen.

It was a picture of me standing beside Michael when he was eight years old.

On the back of the photograph was one sentence.

*YOUR SON WAS NEVER THE TARGET.*

I looked at Michael.

He looked terrified.

My phone vibrated again.

A second message appeared.

*YOU WERE.*

May you like

Then a third.

*AND YOUR ATTORNEY IS ALREADY TOO LATE.*
