Chapter 10: The Last Secret

“Exactly.””

The voice came from behind the warehouse wall.

Everyone turned.

Detective Morgan raised his weapon.

“Come out where I can see you!””

A slow clap echoed through the building.

Then Daniel Cole stepped from the shadows.

Older than the man in the video.

But alive.

He wore a dark overcoat and carried no weapon.

Sabrina backed away from him.

“Dad…”

Daniel smiled.

“You've disappointed me tonight.””

Michael stepped in front of her.

“Stay away from my wife.””

Daniel looked amused.

“Your wife?””

He glanced at Sabrina.

“She was never supposed to marry you.””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“Then what was she supposed to do?””

“Get close to your mother.””

I felt the room go cold.

Sabrina closed her eyes.

Michael turned toward her.

“Is that true?””

She couldn't answer.

Daniel did.

“She was supposed to become part of the family, gain access to Linda's estate, and eventually convince her to transfer control of the company.””

I stared at Sabrina.

“Did you?””

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“At first.””

Michael looked devastated.

“At first?””

Sabrina nodded.

“I was supposed to get close to you because of your mother.””

Daniel smiled.

“But she made one mistake.””

I looked at him.

“What mistake?””

“She fell in love with you.””

Sabrina's shoulders shook.

“I tried to stop.””

Daniel's smile vanished.

“You were weak.””

“No,” she whispered.

“I was human.””

Michael stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, my father threatened you.””

Daniel shrugged.

“Threatened is such an ugly word.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You threatened to kill him.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And you disappeared for twenty-two years. Don't pretend you're the hero.””

Richard's face hardened.

“I kept them alive.””

“You abandoned them.””

“I protected them.””

“You hid.””

Richard took another step.

“I survived.””

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time, anger replaced amusement.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Detective Morgan moved between them.

“Daniel Cole, you're under arrest.””

Daniel laughed.

“You think you're in control?””

Morgan glanced toward the doors.

His radio crackled.

Nothing came through.

He tried again.

“Dispatch, this is Morgan. Respond.””

Static.

Daniel smiled.

“See?””

I looked at James.

He was still holding his phone.

His face had gone white.

“No signal,” he said.

Daniel walked toward me.

“Linda, you have something that belongs to me.””

“The flash drive?””

“Yes.””

“You've spent twenty-two years trying to get it.””

“I've spent twenty-two years trying to recover what was stolen from me.””

I shook my head.

“You stole from yourself.””

Daniel stopped.

“You don't understand what was on those files.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He pointed at Michael.

“You think your son is innocent because he's your son.””

Michael frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ask your mother about the account she opened when you were eight.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Michael looked at me.

“What account?””

I said nothing.

Daniel laughed.

“Go ahead, Linda.””

I remembered.

A small savings account.

I had opened it after the warehouse incident.

I had deposited money into it every month.

But it wasn't a normal savings account.

It was an emergency trust.

I had forgotten the account existed.

Because Daniel had made me forget.

I looked at James.

“Can you find it?””

James was already typing.

A few seconds later, his eyes widened.

“Linda.””

“What?””

“You have an offshore trust.””

I stared at him.

“Where?””

“Switzerland.””

Daniel smiled.

“That is what I want.””

I suddenly understood.

The $22 million had never mattered.

The penthouse had never mattered.

Even my investment accounts were distractions.

Daniel wanted the original trust.

The one created before Michael was old enough to know anything.

The one connected to the encrypted records.

“What is in it?”” I asked.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You always knew.””

I shook my head.

Then something inside me shifted.

A memory.

A woman's voice.

Mine.

If I forget, Michael must know.

I closed my eyes.

Another memory surfaced.

The night of the attack.

Daniel standing over me.

Richard bleeding on the floor.

Michael sleeping upstairs.

And me whispering a password.

Not Michael's birthday.

Something else.

Something I had chosen because no one could guess it.

I opened my eyes.

“The password isn't Michael's birthday.””

Richard stared at me.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You thought it was?””

“I remembered you saying it was.””

“I was lying.””

Daniel's face changed.

I smiled.

“The password is the date Richard and I got married.””

Silence.

Daniel suddenly lunged toward me.

Detective Morgan tackled him.

The flash drive hit the floor.

Sabrina screamed.

Michael grabbed me.

“Mom!””

“I’m okay.””

Morgan wrestled Daniel's hands behind his back.

“Don't move!””

Daniel fought.

“You stupid woman!””

I looked at him.

“For twenty-two years, you thought you erased my memory.””

He stopped struggling.

“You didn't.””

I stepped closer.

“You only erased the part I needed to survive.””

James picked up the flash drive.

“Linda.””

I looked at him.

“It's encrypted.””

“Good.””

Daniel stared at me.

“You don't know what you're doing.””

“I know exactly what I'm doing.””

I took my phone.

“James, call the federal investigators.””

Daniel laughed.

“They won't arrive in time.””

I smiled.

“They don't need to.””

I turned toward Detective Morgan.

“Because the files were already sent.””

His eyes widened.

“When?””

I looked at Sabrina.

She understood first.

“The message.””

I nodded.

“The photograph sent to the wedding guests.””

Michael frowned.

“What about it?””

“It wasn't just a photograph.””

James checked his laptop.

His expression changed.

“Linda…”

“The moment every phone in that ballroom received the file, the encrypted package went through.””

Daniel stared at me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You couldn't.””

“I could.””

He shook his head.

“You don't even know what was in it.””

I looked at him.

“I don't need to.””

Outside, sirens began to rise.

One.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Daniel's face collapsed.

Sabrina covered her mouth.

Michael stood beside me.

And for the first time in twenty-two years, I saw my son look at his father without wondering why he had been abandoned.

Richard walked toward him.

Michael didn't move.

Richard stopped several feet away.

“I don't expect forgiveness.””

Michael stared at him.

“I don't know if I can forgive you.””

“I understand.””

“But I want to know you.””

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

“I'd like that.””

Michael stepped forward.

Then hugged him.

Richard broke down.

I turned away.

Some wounds belonged to the people who carried them.

Sabrina approached me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

She removed her wedding ring.

“I don't deserve him.””

“That isn't my decision.””

“I know.””

She placed the ring on the desk.

“I loved him.””

“I believe you.””

“Do you hate me?””

I looked at the shaved reflection of myself in a broken piece of glass.

“No.””

She seemed surprised.

“I don't hate you.””

“Why?””

“Because hatred would mean you still control part of me.””

Her eyes filled again.

I walked past her.

Behind me, Detective Morgan led Daniel toward the door.

He stopped beside me.

“Mrs. Hayes.””

I turned.

“You may want to know something.””

“What?””

“The note.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“We found the clippers and razor in Sabrina's bag.””

I nodded.

“But the note wasn't the only thing she left in your bedroom.””

My heart skipped.

“What else?””

He handed me a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

I stared at it.

“Where did you find this?””

“In the lining of her makeup case.””

I looked at Sabrina.

She went pale.

“I don't know what that is.””

Michael turned toward her.

I held up the evidence bag.

Then I smiled.

“Neither do I.””

Detective Morgan looked at me.

“There's only one way to find out.””

I looked at the card.

Twenty-two years of secrets had nearly destroyed my family.

But that morning, Sabrina had made one terrible mistake.

She had shaved my head.

She thought she was humiliating an old woman.

Instead, she woke the part of me Daniel had spent twenty-two years trying to bury.

I looked at Michael.

Then Richard.

Then the evidence bag.

“Let's see what she was so afraid I'd remember.””

And when the card was finally opened, the first image on the screen was not Daniel.

It was me.

Holding a newborn baby.

And beside me stood a woman I had never seen before.

May you like

Across the bottom of the screen were four words:

*MICHAEL WASN'T YOUR SON.*
