Chapter 6: The Woman He Chose

The sentence followed me everywhere.

*He didn’t meet you by accident.*

I heard it in the car.

I heard it while brushing my teeth.

I heard it when I woke up at 3:00 a.m. staring at the ceiling of the hotel room.

Because there was one thing worse than discovering your husband betrayed you.

Discovering he might have chosen you for a reason.

Not love.

Not fate.

A reason.

The next morning, I met Daniel at a quiet coffee shop downtown.

I didn’t tell Marcus where I was going.

I didn’t tell Ava either.

For the first time in days, I needed a conversation that wasn’t filled with people protecting me.

Or people hurting me.

Daniel sat across from me with two untouched coffees between us.

“I know this looks terrible,” he said.

I stared at him.

“Everything looks terrible right now.””

He nodded.

“You have every right to hate me.””

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””

His expression changed.

“But I know enough about Marcus.””

Daniel looked down.

“Before you met him, Marcus was desperate.””

“Because of the debt?””

“Yes.””

“What does that have to do with me?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he opened his laptop.

He turned the screen toward me.

On it was an old message thread.

Between Marcus and Daniel.

The date was from six years ago.

Before we met.

I read the messages.

*Marcus: I need someone with stability. Someone who can help me rebuild.*

My stomach tightened.

I kept reading.

*Daniel: You’re talking about finding a partner or finding a solution?*

Then Marcus’s reply:

*Both.*

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

Daniel whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“I need you to stop saying sorry.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Okay.””

“Sorry makes people feel better. I don’t need anyone to feel better.””

I looked back at the screen.

“I need the truth.””

Daniel nodded.

“The first time Marcus saw you was at a charity event.””

I remembered.

A charity gala.

Six years ago.

I had gone with my coworker because she needed someone to attend with her.

Marcus had approached me near the dessert table.

He spilled coffee on his own shirt trying to make me laugh.

I smiled remembering it.

Then the memory disappeared.

Because now I wondered if he had been acting.

“He knew who you were before he spoke to you,” Daniel said.

I closed my eyes.

“How?””

“He researched you.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

“He knew about your career. Your finances. Your family background.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“I wish it was.””

I thought about every early conversation with Marcus.

How he always seemed interested.

How he always knew exactly what to say.

How he made me feel understood.

Was that real?

Or was I just easy to manipulate?

“Why did he marry me?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the table.

“Because he believed you could save him.””

The words hurt.

Not because they surprised me.

Because some part of me already knew.

I had spent years supporting him.

Helping him.

Encouraging him.

I thought we were building a life together.

But maybe I was the foundation he stood on while pretending he built it himself.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

*Please meet me. I’ll tell you everything.*

I showed Daniel.

He looked nervous.

“Don’t go alone.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus only tells the truth when he has no other choice.””

I stared at the message.

Then another one appeared.

*I know about the messages with Daniel. I know he showed you. Please understand there’s something he doesn’t know.*

My heart skipped.

Something Daniel doesn’t know.

I looked up.

“Is Marcus capable of worse?””

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said:

“I thought I knew everything he did.””

That answer terrified me.

I met Marcus that evening at the restaurant where we celebrated our first anniversary.

The same corner table.

The same window.

The same place where he once held my hands and promised:

“I’ll never hurt you.””

Now he looked like a stranger sitting in my memories.

“Nia.””

I didn’t sit down.

“What don’t I know?””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Told me what?””

He swallowed.

Then he reached into his coat pocket.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“I didn’t choose you because you could help me financially.””

I stared at him.

“Then why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because before I met you…”

He pushed the envelope toward me.

“I already knew someone was trying to destroy your life.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“And I was the only person who could stop them.””

I stared at him.

Waiting for the lie.

Waiting for the manipulation.

May you like

But his next words changed everything.

“Your family has been hiding something from you for years.””
