Chapter 2: The Woman Who Knew My Name
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Not Marcus.
Not me.
Not the woman standing beside him.
The entire lobby felt frozen.
I could hear the sound of heels clicking somewhere in the distance. A printer running behind the reception desk. Someone laughing near the elevators.
Normal sounds.
A normal day.
Except my entire marriage had just collapsed in the middle of a glass office building.
Marcus looked at the woman.
Then at me.
His face had the expression of someone trapped between two disasters.
“Nia, please.””
I almost laughed.
Please.
That was his first word.
Not sorry.
Not an explanation.
Please.
I looked down at the lunch bag in my hand.
The same lunch I had woken up early to make.
Grilled chicken.
Roasted vegetables.
The chocolate chip cookies he loved.
I had packed love into that bag.
And now I felt ridiculous holding it.
The woman beside Marcus stepped back.
Her eyes moved from him to me.
“You’re really married?””
Her voice wasn’t angry.
That surprised me.
She sounded hurt.
Confused.
Like she was discovering the same betrayal I was.
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
She looked at Marcus.
“You said she passed away three years ago.””
My chest tightened.
Passed away.
Those words echoed louder than anything else.
I looked at Marcus.
“What did she just say?””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Nia—”
“No.””
My voice came out sharper than I expected.
“Don’t say my name like you’re comforting me. Answer me.””
People in the lobby had started looking over.
Marcus noticed.
Of course he noticed.
He always cared about appearances.
“Nia, we need to talk somewhere private.””
I stared at him.
“Private?””
I held up the lunch bag.
“I came here because my husband forgot his lunch.””
My voice cracked.
“I thought I was doing something sweet.””
Marcus looked away.
That hurt more than if he had yelled.
The woman wiped her eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
For a moment, I hated her.
It was easier to hate her.
She was the stranger holding my husband’s arm.
The stranger who knew secrets about my marriage.
But then I saw her face.
She looked broken too.
“What’s your name?”” I asked.
She hesitated.
“Lauren.””
“Lauren,” I repeated.
The name felt strange in my mouth.
Lauren nodded.
“I swear, I didn’t know.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Lauren—”
She turned toward him.
“No. Don’t.””
Her voice was quiet but firm.
“You told me your wife died. You showed me a picture of a woman you said you lost.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
A picture.
He had shown her a picture of me.
Not only had he lied.
He had used me as part of the lie.
I looked at Marcus.
“Why?””
He had no answer.
And somehow, that was the answer.
I walked toward the elevators.
“Nia,” Marcus called.
I stopped.
But I didn’t turn around.
“What?””
“I love you.””
A bitter laugh escaped my lips.
“You love me?””
I finally faced him.
“You built another life while standing inside ours.””
His face fell.
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. A mistake is saying something hurtful during an argument.””
I looked at Lauren.
“This was a decision.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lauren whispered something that made both Marcus and me look at her.
“There’s something else you should know.””
Marcus’s expression changed instantly.
“Lauren, don’t.””
That was the first time I saw fear in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Fear.
I stepped closer.
“What else?””
Lauren looked at me.
“I found out something strange last month.””
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“Lauren, stop.””
But she continued.
“The reason I believed him was because he had documents.””
My heart started pounding.
“What documents?””
Lauren looked at Marcus.
Then back at me.
“Documents proving he was single.””
The elevator doors opened.
Nobody entered.
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Marcus hadn’t just lied with words.
He had prepared.
He had built evidence.
He had created a world where I didn’t exist.
I looked at my husband of five years.
The man who slept beside me every night.
The man who kissed me goodbye that morning.
“Marcus…”
May you like
My voice was barely a whisper.
“What exactly did you tell people I was?””
