Chapter 7: The Man at the Door
For three seconds, I couldn't breathe.
The man standing beneath the auditorium lights looked exactly like the photograph I had carried in my wallet for twenty-two years.
The same deep-set eyes.
The same crooked left eyebrow.
The same slight tilt of his head when he was nervous.
But the man in front of me had gray hair now.
His face was thinner.
And there were lines around his mouth that I had never seen before.
"Richard?""
The word came out as a whisper.
Michael stood beside me, completely frozen.
"Dad?""
Richard looked at him.
For one heartbeat, father and son simply stared at each other.
Then Richard said the one thing that made my knees weaken.
"I'm sorry, Michael.""
Michael moved first.
He crossed the aisle so quickly that a security guard reached for his arm.
"Sir, please—"
Michael pulled away.
"That's my father.""
Richard didn't resist when Michael reached him.
Instead, he opened his arms.
Michael stopped inches away.
"You died.""
Richard swallowed.
"I know.""
"You died twenty-two years ago.""
"I know.""
"You let Mom believe you were dead.""
Richard's eyes filled.
"I know.""
Michael's voice cracked.
"Why?""
Richard looked at me.
"Because I thought it was the only way to keep you both alive.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Richard looked toward me.
"Denise—"
"No.""
I stepped forward.
"You don't get to say my name like nothing happened.""
He lowered his eyes.
"I deserve that.""
"You left me with a seventeen-year-old boy, a mortgage, creditors, and a funeral.""
"I know.""
"I watched our son cry until he couldn't breathe.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"I know.""
"You let me believe you didn't love us.""
His voice broke.
"I loved you so much I thought disappearing was the only thing I could give you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Twenty-two years.""
He nodded.
"I counted every one.""
Michael looked between us.
"Then why come back now?""
Richard hesitated.
"Because Thomas knows.""
The name changed everything.
Eleanor stepped forward.
"How close is he?""
Richard looked at her.
"Close enough.""
Chloe's mother covered her mouth.
Margaret whispered, "Thomas found you?""
Richard nodded.
"He found the account.""
Michael frowned.
"What account?""
"The one containing the evidence.""
"What evidence?""
Richard looked at him.
"The evidence that proves Thomas stole millions from the company and arranged the accident that everyone believed killed me.""
A gasp moved through the room.
I stared at Richard.
"You survived an accident?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you come home?""
His eyes met mine.
"Because Thomas wasn't working alone.""
Michael went still.
"Who was helping him?""
Richard didn't answer immediately.
His eyes moved toward Margaret.
She began crying.
"I didn't know.""
Richard nodded.
"I believe you.""
Margaret looked at him.
"Then why did you disappear?""
"Because the police report was already compromised.""
Michael shook his head.
"You're telling me you trusted nobody?""
"I trusted one person.""
He looked at Eleanor.
"She kept my evidence.""
Eleanor nodded.
"I promised him I would wait until Michael was old enough.""
Michael looked at the black folder.
"That's why you waited until graduation.""
Richard nodded.
"I wanted my son to become strong enough to face the truth without letting it destroy him.""
Michael's eyes filled.
"You could have trusted me.""
"I was seventeen.""
"I'm thirty-nine.""
"I know.""
"And you still stayed away.""
Richard took a slow breath.
"Because I made another mistake.""
"What?""
"I believed the threat had ended.""
Michael's phone vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
A new message.
*LOOK BEHIND YOU.*
Michael turned.
The rear doors were open.
Nobody stood there.
Then another message appeared.
*YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.*
Richard's expression changed.
"Get your mother out.""
Michael grabbed my hand.
"Come on.""
But I didn't move.
"Not again.""
Richard stared at me.
"What?""
"I'm not running.""
He looked almost frightened.
"Denise, please.""
"No.""
I stepped toward him.
"For twenty-two years, everyone made decisions about my life without telling me the truth.""
My voice shook.
"Not anymore.""
Michael nodded slowly.
"She's right.""
Richard looked at his son.
"Michael—"
"No, Dad.""
Michael stood beside me.
"You disappeared to protect us.""
He held up the folder.
"But you forgot something.""
Richard waited.
"We're not children anymore.""
A loud crash came from the lobby.
Everyone jumped.
Security rushed toward the entrance.
Richard's face turned pale.
"He's here.""
Michael tightened his grip on my hand.
"Thomas?""
Richard nodded.
Then the auditorium doors slammed shut.
And from somewhere inside the building, a man's voice echoed through the speakers.
"Richard.""
Everyone froze.
May you like
The voice laughed softly.
"You should have stayed dead.""
