Chapter 3: Beneath the Robe
Chloe stared at the letter as if the words might rearrange themselves if she blinked hard enough.
"Where did you get this?""
Michael folded his arms.
"You know where.""
She shook her head.
"No. No, that's impossible.""
Her mother reached for the paper.
"Let me see.""
Chloe pulled it away.
"Mom, don't.""
The dean stepped closer.
"Perhaps we should move this discussion somewhere private.""
Michael looked at him.
"You're right.""
Then he looked at the audience.
"But before I leave, there's something my mother deserves to hear.""
He turned toward me.
My heart was pounding.
"Mom, come here.""
I walked toward him.
He took my hand.
His palm was warm.
The auditorium seemed enormous now.
Hundreds of strangers were watching us.
But all I could see was the little boy who used to sleep beside me when thunderstorms frightened him.
"Remember when Dad left?"" he asked.
I swallowed.
"Yes.""
"You told me he didn't leave because of me.""
"He didn't.""
"You said grown-ups sometimes make choices they can't take back.""
I nodded.
"I remember.""
Michael looked at the audience.
"I believed her.""
He glanced at the black folder.
"But I didn't understand what she did after he left.""
Chloe whispered, "This is unbelievable.""
Michael ignored her.
"She worked nights.""
He looked at me.
"She worked weekends.""
Another glance at the documents.
"She cleaned houses after her nursing shifts.""
My eyes filled.
"Michael, that's enough.""
"No.""
His voice was gentle.
"For once, Mom, it isn't.""
He reached beneath his robe again.
And pulled out a second object.
A small velvet box.
I knew it immediately.
My breath caught.
"Michael...""
He opened it.
Inside was a simple gold ring.
Not expensive.
Not glamorous.
But unmistakable.
My wedding ring.
The ring I had sold years ago.
I stared at it.
My knees nearly gave out.
"How?""
Michael smiled.
"I bought it back.""
I covered my mouth.
"Where?""
"At a pawn shop.""
He laughed softly.
"The guy remembered you.""
I couldn't breathe.
Michael closed the box.
"I've been saving for it since sophomore year.""
"You spent that money on this?""
"Some of it.""
"You needed that money.""
"I needed you to have this more.""
I reached for him.
He hugged me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Chloe laughed.
A strange, brittle sound.
"You think a ring changes everything?""
Michael turned.
"No.""
"Then what is all this?""
He looked at her.
"The truth.""
Chloe's jaw tightened.
"You've been planning this.""
"Yes.""
"To embarrass me?""
"No.""
"Then why?""
"Because you embarrassed my mother in front of everyone.""
He paused.
"And because this isn't the first time.""
Chloe's expression changed.
Michael reached into the robe one more time.
This time, he pulled out a thick manila envelope.
He handed it to the dean.
"Sir, I was going to give this to my mother after the ceremony.""
The dean opened it.
His face changed as he read.
"What is this?""
Michael answered calmly.
"Proof.""
"Proof of what?""
"That Chloe tried to force my mother out of our family home.""
Chloe's face went white.
"That's a lie!""
Michael shook his head.
"It's a copy of the letter you sent her.""
"I never—"
He pulled out his phone.
"Do you want me to play the recording?""
Silence.
Chloe stopped breathing for a moment.
The dean looked between them.
"What recording?""
Michael looked at me.
"I recorded our conversation last month.""
My heart sank.
"What conversation?""
"The one where Chloe told me she'd already spoken to a lawyer.""
Chloe stepped forward.
"You weren't supposed to know!""
Michael smiled sadly.
"That's the problem, Chloe.""
He opened his phone.
"I knew.""
The first seconds of the recording played through the microphone.
Chloe's own voice filled the auditorium.
"Your mother needs to sell the house.""
I felt the blood leave my face.
Her voice continued.
"If she refuses, we'll find another way.""
Then Michael's voice.
"Another way to do what?""
A pause.
And Chloe's answer.
"To make her leave.""
The recording stopped.
No one moved.
Chloe's mother stared at her daughter.
"You said you were helping him with the house.""
"I was!""
"You threatened his mother?""
"I didn't mean it!""
Michael's voice became ice-cold.
"You meant every word.""
Chloe looked at me.
"Denise, please.""
I couldn't answer.
She took one step closer.
"I was scared.""
"Of what?"" I asked.
"You.""
The answer surprised me.
"Me?""
"You were always there. You knew him before I did. You knew every weakness, every secret, every part of his life.""
I stared at her.
"So you tried to remove me.""
She looked down.
"I wanted a future with him.""
Michael shook his head.
"You wanted a future where my mother wasn't in it.""
Chloe cried now.
"I love you.""
Michael's expression softened for only a second.
"I believe you.""
Hope flashed across her face.
Then he continued.
"But love doesn't give you permission to destroy someone.""
He turned toward me.
"Especially not the woman who destroyed herself to give me a life.""
I started crying.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
I cried the way I had wanted to cry for years.
Michael took my hand.
The audience began to applaud.
Slowly at first.
Then louder.
A standing ovation spread through the auditorium.
Chloe stood in the middle of it, completely alone.
But Michael wasn't finished.
He leaned close to me.
"There's one last thing.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"What?""
He smiled.
"Look inside the folder.""
I opened it.
Behind the photographs and receipts was a final document.
My eyes moved across the first page.
Then I stopped.
The signature at the bottom was unmistakable.
My son's.
But the name of the document made my heart race.
I looked up at Michael.
"What did you do?""
He squeezed my hand.
"Something I should have done years ago.""
Behind us, Chloe suddenly whispered:
"That's not yours.""
Michael turned.
"It is now.""
May you like
Chloe stared at the document.
And the color vanished completely from her face.
