Chapter 9: The Man Who Came Back

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The hospital room was so quiet I could hear the steady rhythm of my mother’s heart monitor.

I looked at Aaliyah.

Her face had gone completely pale.

“My father?””

My mother nodded slowly.

“Aaliyah’s father.””

I turned toward my wife.

“You knew he was here?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Her voice was almost a whisper.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years.””

That surprised me.

After everything I had learned about my own family, I thought nothing could shock me anymore.

I was wrong.

My father stepped closer.

“Evelyn, why would her father take the documents?””

My mother looked down.

“Because he knows the truth.””

“The truth about what?””

She closed her eyes.

“The truth about Daniel.””

The room became tense.

Aaliyah sat beside my mother.

“Evelyn, what are you saying?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“Your father and Daniel’s mother were connected years ago.””

Aaliyah looked confused.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

My mother looked at me.

“Before Richard left, before all the anger, there was another problem.””

Richard lowered his head.

“I remember.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I knew there were people angry about the inheritance.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I thought keeping you away from it would protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another person trying to protect me.

Another disaster created by silence.

Aaliyah stood.

“I need to find my father.””

I grabbed her hand.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He may have the answers.””

“And he may be the reason your mother is scared.””

She pulled her hand away.

“You don’t know that.””

“No,” I admitted.

“But I know what it feels like when someone hides the truth.””

The words hit both of us.

Because we both knew they were about more than her father.

They were about us.

An hour later, we found him.

Not at the hospital.

At my mother’s old house.

The one she had lived in before her illness became too difficult.

A man stood on the porch.

Older.

Tired.

Holding the same folder from the hospital.

Aaliyah froze.

“Dad.””

The man turned.

His face changed instantly.

“Aaliyah.””

She walked closer slowly.

“You came here?””

He looked at the folder.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Because someone needed to stop making the same mistakes.””

I didn’t like the way he said that.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“Your family buried the truth for years.””

“And yours didn’t?””

His expression changed.

Aaliyah looked between us.

“Please.””

Her father sighed.

“My name is Samuel Carter.””

He looked at the folder.

“I used to work with Daniel’s father.””

Richard frowned.

“Business partners?””

Samuel nodded.

“Yes.””

“And what happened?””

Samuel looked away.

“Daniel’s father stole money from the company.””

The pieces started connecting.

“The inheritance?””

“No,” Samuel said.

“Something older.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were old financial records.

“Your grandmother discovered what happened.””

He pointed at the papers.

“She threatened to expose him.””

My mother had known.

My grandmother had known.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

“What does this have to do with Daniel?””

Samuel looked at Aaliyah.

“Daniel grew up believing your grandmother destroyed his family.””

Aaliyah whispered, “Because she exposed his father?””

Samuel nodded.

“But the truth was worse.””

He handed me a document.

I read it.

And my expression changed.

Daniel’s father hadn’t lost everything because of my grandmother.

He lost everything because of his own actions.

“He blamed the wrong person,” I said.

Samuel nodded.

“For years.””

Then I looked at Samuel.

“Why did you take the documents from my mother’s room?””

He looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel was coming for them.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Samuel looked at Aaliyah.

“I’ve been watching him for months.””

Aaliyah stepped back.

“What?””

“I knew he was angry.””

Her eyes filled with hurt.

“You could have told me.””

Samuel looked down.

“I was ashamed.””

The same word.

The same excuse.

The same damage.

I understood then.

Everyone in this story had been running from shame.

My father.

My mother.

Aaliyah’s father.

Even me.

Samuel continued.

“I took the documents because they contained evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

He handed me another paper.

A recording authorization.

“He planned everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“Daniel?””

Samuel nodded.

“He created the fake approvals. He forged your signature. He wanted the inheritance documents.””

Aaliyah looked at the paper.

“But why hurt Evelyn?””

Samuel’s face hardened.

“Because your mother was the only person who could prove his family was responsible for their own downfall.””

Then my phone rang.

The hospital.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A nurse spoke quickly.

“Mr. Reed, you need to come back immediately.””

My heart raced.

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your mother woke up and gave us a name.””

I looked at everyone.

“What name?””

The nurse’s voice lowered.

“She identified the person who helped Daniel.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

The answer came.

May you like

And it was the last person I expected.

“Your mother named Marcus Reed.””
