Chapter 7: The Signature I Didn’t Remember

I stared at the paper in my hands until my fingers went numb.

My name was written at the bottom.

*Marcus Reed.*

The signature looked like mine.

The handwriting looked like mine.

But I had no memory of ever signing that document.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

The nurse looked uncomfortable.

“It’s a consent form.””

“For what?””

She glanced at the page.

“Withdrawal of treatment authorization.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“No.””

Aaliyah stepped closer.

“Marcus?””

I shook my head.

“No, I never signed this.””

The nurse looked at me carefully.

“Sir, the hospital received it yesterday.””

“I didn’t sign anything.””

My voice rose.

“I would never stop my mother’s treatment.””

The nurse lowered the paper.

“Then we need to investigate immediately.””

My father arrived ten minutes later.

One look at my face told him something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I handed him the document.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“This isn’t right.””

Aaliyah looked at him.

“Why?””

Richard pointed at the signature.

“Because Marcus doesn’t sign like this.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He tapped the paper.

“Your signature has always been sharp. You press harder on the last letter.””

I stared.

He was right.

Even after seven years apart, he remembered something that small.

“This one was copied,” he said.

My mother’s room suddenly felt colder.

Someone had used my identity to hurt her.

Someone had created a document that could have ended her treatment.

And somehow, they had made it look like I was the one who did it.

The hospital launched an investigation.

We spent the next hour answering questions.

When the administrator arrived, she placed a folder on the table.

“We reviewed the submission records.””

I leaned forward.

“And?””

She looked serious.

“The form was submitted through an internal employee account.””

“Daniel Whitmore,” Aaliyah said quietly.

The administrator nodded.

“Yes.””

My fists tightened.

“So he forged my signature?””

“We don’t know yet,” she replied carefully.

“But the system shows he accessed your mother’s file multiple times.””

My father looked at me.

“He’s trying to create a paper trail.””

Aaliyah opened her notebook.

“He wanted it to look like Marcus gave up.””

The words hit me.

Because that was exactly what would have happened.

If my mother’s condition worsened, everyone would have believed I abandoned her.

The son who stopped treatment.

The son who walked away.

I looked at my wife.

“You knew something like this could happen.””

She hesitated.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Her eyes filled.

“Afraid that if something happened to your mother, you would blame yourself forever.””

I looked down.

She had been protecting me from pain.

Even when I didn’t deserve it.

The administrator cleared her throat.

“There is one more thing.””

We all looked up.

She opened another file.

“Daniel Whitmore requested access to financial information connected to your mother’s treatment.””

My father frowned.

“Why?””

The administrator looked at the documents.

“Because he believed there was money involved.””

I felt confused.

“Money?””

My father slowly nodded.

“The inheritance.””

The room became silent.

Daniel wasn’t trying to save money.

He wasn’t trying to follow policy.

He wanted access to something he believed belonged to him.

Aaliyah looked at me.

“Your grandmother’s inheritance.””

I nodded.

“The one nobody knew about.””

My father looked away.

“There’s something else I never told you.””

I felt my patience disappear.

“Another secret?””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

“My whole life feels like a room full of locked doors.””

Richard accepted that.

“I found out years ago that your grandmother changed her will before she died.””

My mother looked surprised.

“You never told me.””

“I was afraid.””

I looked at him.

“Of what?””

He swallowed.

“That the truth would destroy the family.””

I shook my head.

“It’s already destroyed enough.””

He continued.

“She didn’t leave everything to her children.””

I looked at the folder.

“Then who did she leave it to?””

Richard looked at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She left the inheritance to you.””

I couldn’t speak.

My grandmother.

The woman who used to hold my hand when I was young.

The woman everyone said had no secrets.

“She left it for your future,” Richard explained.

“Daniel believes it should have gone to his mother instead.””

I thought about everything.

The blocked treatments.

The fake signature.

The pressure.

All because someone wanted revenge over money.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

*“You should have stayed out of family business, Marcus.””*

Then another message arrived.

A photo.

My blood froze.

It was Aaliyah.

Standing outside the hospital.

Taken just minutes earlier.

I looked up.

She saw my face.

“What happened?””

I turned the phone toward her.

And before anyone could say another word, the hospital lights flickered.

The hallway went dark.

Then an alarm started ringing.

A nurse ran toward us.

“Mr. Reed!””

I stood.

“What?””

Her face was pale.

“Your mother’s room has been entered.””

My heart stopped.

“By who?””

The nurse looked behind her.

May you like

And whispered:

“The person who did it knew the security code.””
