Chapter 7: My Brother Had Been Planning This for Six Years

I called Michael back seventeen times.

He didn't answer once.

By the eighteenth attempt, I was standing in my study with Rachel's letter spread across my desk, the phone clenched in my hand, and a realization I could barely bring myself to consider.

My brother had known something about my first wife's death.

And whatever he knew, Vanessa had been helping him keep it buried.

I called my mother.

“Mom, I need you to tell me the truth about Michael.””

She went quiet.

“What happened, Daniel?””

“Did Michael visit Rachel the night she died?””

Another silence.

Then my mother sighed.

“I was hoping you'd never ask me that.””

My knees nearly gave way.

“You knew?””

“I knew he told me he had spoken to her earlier that evening. I didn't know it was important.””

“What time?””

“I don't remember exactly.””

“Mom, please.””

She inhaled shakily.

“He called me around eight. He said Rachel was upset about something and wanted to talk to me. I told him I was preparing dinner and would call her later.””

My grip tightened.

“Did you call her?””

“No. By the time I heard about the accident, everything had already happened.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Michael said he'd spoken to her days before. I didn't understand that he meant that evening until you asked.””

I paced the study.

“Did he say what they talked about?””

“He said it was a disagreement about Lily's inheritance.””

I stopped walking.

“What?””

“Rachel had apparently asked him to help review some financial documents. He said she became upset when he questioned her arrangements.””

I looked at the letter.

“Did Michael tell you he was the last person she spoke to?””

“No.””

My mother's voice broke.

“Daniel, what is happening?””

I couldn't tell her everything. Not yet.

“I need you to stay with Lily for a while. And please don't let Michael take her anywhere.””

“Of course. But, sweetheart, you need to be careful. Michael has always been good at making people believe he's helping them.””

The words stayed with me long after we hung up.

That evening, I drove to Michael's house.

He lived in a large colonial-style home about twenty minutes away, the kind of place with immaculate hedges and a basketball hoop beside the garage. I had helped him install that hoop when his youngest son turned ten.

We had spent years sharing holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners.

I had never once wondered whether my brother might be capable of betraying me.

His wife, Rebecca, answered the door.

“Daniel? Is everything okay?””

“I need to speak to Michael.””

She glanced over her shoulder.

“He's in his office.””

“Alone?””

Her expression shifted.

“Yes.””

I walked past her.

Michael was standing beside his desk, holding a glass of whiskey. A folder lay open in front of him.

When he saw me, he set the glass down.

“I told you not to come here.””

“And I told you to answer my questions.””

He closed the folder.

“Daniel, you're upset. You're grieving again, and Vanessa has made everything worse. You need to calm down.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Stop telling me how I feel.””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“From what? The truth?””

Michael rubbed his jaw.

“Rachel was planning something that would have torn this family apart.””

“What was she planning?””

“She wanted to change Lily's financial arrangements.””

“Those were her arrangements to make.””

“She was putting money ahead of family.””

I stared at him.

“Rachel was protecting our daughter.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“From whom?””

“That's what I'm asking you.””

He walked to the window.

“Rachel didn't trust people easily. You knew that. She suspected everyone had an agenda.””

“She wrote your name in a letter before she died.””

Michael turned.

“Show me.””

“No.””

“Then how do I know it isn't something Lauren invented?””

“Because you just admitted you argued with Rachel about Lily's inheritance.””

His face went pale.

For a moment, the room was completely silent.

Then he reached for the folder on his desk.

“Fine. You want the truth? Look at this.””

He slid a document toward me.

It was a copy of a financial agreement involving a company called Meridian Family Advisory Group. The paperwork referred to a trust established for Lily after Rachel's death.

My eyes moved down the page.

There were references to a financial review, a proposed restructuring, and a person authorized to communicate with the advisory firm.

The name listed beside the correspondence was Michael Carter.

“What is this?”” I asked.

“A review I was asked to conduct.””

“By whom?””

“Rachel.””

I shook my head.

“Lauren said Rachel was investigating the firm, not working with you.””

“Lauren doesn't know everything.””

“Then explain this agreement.””

Michael pulled the document back.

“I was helping Rachel understand the options. She wanted to make sure Lily would be protected if something happened to you.””

“And what did you recommend?””

He hesitated.

“I suggested consolidating certain assets.””

“Into whose control?””

“That's not how it works.””

“Whose control, Michael?””

He slammed the folder shut.

“Enough!””

His sudden anger startled even him.

He took a breath and lowered his voice.

“Daniel, I did what I thought was best. Rachel was terrified of losing control. She was making decisions based on fear.””

“And you were making decisions with my daughter's money?””

“I was trying to protect it!””

“Then why did Rachel write that you were the last person she spoke to?””

Michael looked away.

I stepped closer.

“What happened that night?””

He shook his head.

“Nothing.””

“Did you see her?””

“No.””

“Did you call her?””

He said nothing.

“Michael!””

“Yes!”” he shouted.

“I called her. Happy now?””

My heart hammered.

“What did she say?””

“She told me she was going to expose everything.””

“What everything?””

He looked at me, his eyes suddenly cold.

“Your wife was going to destroy people who had done nothing wrong.””

“Who?””

Michael picked up his whiskey.

“Leave, Daniel.””

I didn't move.

“Who were you protecting?””

He set the glass down so hard that liquid spilled across the desk.

“You think you're some hero because you tore up four plane tickets? You have no idea what you've walked into.””

“Then tell me.””

He leaned toward me.

“Vanessa was supposed to make Lily's living situation easier. That was the arrangement.””

My stomach turned.

“What arrangement?””

“Lily was supposed to spend more time with Margaret. You were supposed to have more freedom to manage your household. Everyone would have benefited.””

“Everyone except my daughter.””

Michael shrugged.

“She would have been fine.””

I stared at him.

“You were planning to push a twelve-year-old girl out of her own home.””

“We were trying to prevent a much bigger problem.””

“What problem?””

Michael's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen, and his expression changed.

He declined the call.

A second later, a message appeared.

I saw only a few words before he turned the phone over.

*She found the original recording.*

My blood ran cold.

“Who sent that?””

“None of your business.””

“What recording?””

Michael moved toward the door.

“You need to leave.””

I caught his arm.

“What recording, Michael?””

He pulled free.

For the first time in my life, I saw genuine panic in my brother's face.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“The recording Rachel made that night.””

He stared at me.

“If you hear it, Daniel, you'll understand why I did what I did.””

I backed away.

“What did you do?””

Michael said nothing.

I walked out of his office with my hands shaking.

As I reached the front door, Rebecca appeared in the hallway.

She was crying.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “there's something you need to know.””

I turned.

She glanced toward Michael's office, then pressed a small flash drive into my palm.

“He doesn't know I kept a copy.””

I stared at it.

“What is this?””

Rebecca's voice trembled.

“The recording Michael thought he'd destroyed.””

May you like

Then she leaned close and whispered six words I would never forget.

“Rachel was asking him about Vanessa.””
