Chapter 2: The Reservation Was Only the Beginning
“Thank you for calling Pacific Horizon Airways. How may I assist you today?””
The customer service representative sounded cheerful.
My wife did not.
“Daniel, hang up,” Vanessa ordered.
“You are embarrassing yourself.””
I turned away from her.
“My name is Daniel Carter. I need to discuss a reservation for four passengers departing Friday for Honolulu.””
“Certainly, Mr. Carter. Do you have your booking reference?””
I read it from the screen.
Vanessa stood across the island, gathering the torn ticket pieces as if she could somehow put the trip back together.
“Sir,” the representative said, “I can see the reservation. Before we proceed, are you looking to cancel all four passengers or make changes to the booking?””
“I'm considering canceling the entire reservation.””
“Daniel!”” Vanessa shouted.
I closed my eyes briefly.
“Please continue,” I told the representative.
“Of course. I should let you know that the tickets were purchased under a restricted fare. Depending on the circumstances, cancellation may result in a substantial loss of the fare.””
“Understood.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You cannot punish my children because you're angry with me.””
I covered the phone's microphone.
“Your children have done nothing wrong. I'm not blaming them.””
“Then stop ruining their vacation!””
“Why wasn't Lily included?””
“Because I wanted one week with my children without having to accommodate yours!””
The sentence hung between us.
I uncovered the microphone.
“Could you give me a moment, please?””
“Certainly, sir.””
I placed the call on hold.
Then I faced Vanessa.
“Do you hear yourself?””
She crossed her arms.
“Oh, spare me the righteous-father routine. You have always treated Lily differently from Ethan and Sophie. You give her everything, and then you expect me to rearrange my life around her.””
“Everything? She's twelve years old.””
“She gets special treatment because her mother died.””
I stared at her.
Vanessa seemed to realize she had gone too far, but instead of apologizing, she doubled down.
“Everyone walks on eggshells around her. I can't discipline her without you accusing me of being cruel. I can't make plans without you asking whether she'll be included. It's exhausting.””
I took a slow breath.
“Discipline her for what?””
“For being disrespectful.””
“What did she do?””
Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.
“It's not one specific thing, Daniel. It's her attitude.””
“My daughter asked whether she was going on vacation. That's what started this.””
“Because you never told her the truth!””
“What truth?””
“That she isn't my daughter!””
The words struck the kitchen like a dropped plate.
For a few seconds, neither of us moved.
Then I picked up my phone again.
“I'm canceling the reservation.””
Vanessa lunged forward.
“You can't!””
I stepped back.
“Watch me.””
I ended the call on hold and dialed the airline again, this time determined to finish the conversation.
Vanessa stormed into the living room, where Ethan was sitting on the couch with his headphones around his neck.
“What is wrong with your stepfather?”” she demanded.
Ethan looked from her to me.
“What's happening?””
“Your vacation is being canceled because Daniel has decided to have a tantrum.””
I heard him sigh.
“Mom, seriously?””
She spun toward him.
“Don't take his side.””
“I'm not taking anyone's side. I just want to know what's going on.””
Sophie appeared in the doorway, clutching a stuffed rabbit.
“Are we still going to Hawaii?””
Vanessa's face changed instantly.
She crouched in front of her younger daughter.
“Of course, sweetheart. Daddy is just upset right now.””
I stared at her.
She was already lying to them.
Not explaining.
Not apologizing.
Lying.
I returned to the kitchen and called the airline's dedicated cancellation line.
This time, I spoke to a different representative, a woman named Melissa.
After verifying my identity, she pulled up the booking.
“Mr. Carter, I can see that the reservation was purchased using a card ending in 4812. Are you the cardholder?””
“Yes.””
“Thank you. I can explain your options, but I want to clarify something first. The booking includes four passengers, and the fare conditions vary depending on the ticket type. We may be able to cancel some passengers without canceling the entire reservation.””
I looked toward the living room.
Vanessa had her arm around Sophie. Ethan was staring at the floor.
I could have canceled only Vanessa's ticket.
I could have left the children out of our argument entirely.
But something Melissa said next made me pause.
“I also see an earlier modification to this reservation. Would you like me to explain it?””
“What modification?””
“An additional passenger was originally entered into the booking, but the passenger was removed before ticketing.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“An additional passenger?””
“Yes, sir. I can't provide details about an individual who isn't currently on the reservation without confirming the relevant booking history, but I can tell you the current booking contains four ticketed passengers.””
I felt a cold sensation move through my chest.
“Can you tell me when that change was made?””
“Let me check.””
I waited.
Across the room, Vanessa had stopped talking.
She was watching me.
Melissa returned to the line.
“The passenger was removed twelve days ago.””
Twelve days.
I remembered that evening.
Vanessa had been sitting at our dining table with her laptop, smiling as she told me she'd finally finished booking our Hawaii trip.
I had asked whether Lily was included.
She'd kissed my cheek and said, “Of course, Daniel. I wouldn't leave her out.””
I had believed her.
“Melissa,” I said carefully, “is there any way to verify who that additional passenger was?””
“I'm afraid I can't disclose the removed passenger's information without further verification. However, if you have access to the original confirmation email, it may contain the earlier itinerary or a record of the change.””
I thanked her and ended the call.
Then I opened my email.
The original confirmation had been forwarded to me by Vanessa two weeks earlier, with a message that read, Everything is booked! We're finally going to Hawaii!
I scrolled through the details.
Four passengers.
Four names.
Vanessa. Ethan. Sophie. Daniel.
But near the bottom was a small line I hadn't noticed before.
*Previous itinerary updated following passenger removal.*
I clicked the booking history.
A new page opened.
The first entry showed the original reservation.
Five passengers.
My name.
Vanessa's.
Ethan's.
Sophie's.
And—
I stopped breathing.
The fifth name was Lily Carter.
She had been included when the vacation was first booked.
Someone had removed her later.
I turned toward my wife.
“Vanessa.””
She stood very still.
“Who removed Lily from the reservation?””
Her face went pale.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
I held up the phone.
“The airline says she was originally included. Her name was removed twelve days ago.””
Vanessa glanced at the screen.
For one brief second, something flashed across her face.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Then she lifted her chin.
“You're misunderstanding the booking process.””
“Then explain it.””
“I probably made a mistake.””
“You don't accidentally remove a child from a family vacation and then tell her she was never invited.””
Ethan slowly stood up.
“Mom?””
Vanessa ignored him.
“Daniel, this is between us.””
“No. It became something else when you looked my daughter in the face and told her she didn't belong.””
She reached for my phone.
I moved it away.
“Give it to me!””
“Why?””
“Because you're making accusations based on a website you don't understand!””
I looked at the booking history again.
The removal entry had a timestamp.
It also listed the method of change.
*Online account modification.*
I remembered giving Vanessa access to the airline account so she could arrange the trip.
I had trusted her with the booking.
I had trusted her with my children.
And now I was beginning to wonder whether the missing ticket was just one piece of a much larger plan.
I opened the original email attachment.
A PDF itinerary began downloading.
Vanessa lunged toward me.
“Don't open that!””
I froze.
Her reaction was so immediate, so desperate, that even Ethan noticed.
“Mom,” he said slowly, “what's in the itinerary?””
Vanessa looked at him.
May you like
Then at me.
And for the first time, she had absolutely nothing to say.
