Chapter 8: The Father Who Finally Spoke
Robert was waiting at his house when I arrived.
Margaret had insisted on accompanying me.
Michael came too.
Daniel and Vanessa stayed behind at the club, where Susan continued collecting statements from the people involved.
The drive was almost silent.
When we reached Robert's house, Patricia was already standing on the porch.
Her eyes were swollen.
She looked at Michael first.
Then at me.
“Thank you for coming.””
I nodded.
“Where is Robert?””
“Upstairs.””
She hesitated.
“He hasn't been himself since the hospital.””
Margaret introduced herself and explained that she was there to document Robert's account, provided he was willing and capable of speaking.
Patricia led us into the living room.
Robert sat in his favorite armchair.
He looked much older than I remembered.
His hands trembled slightly as he reached for his glasses.
“Emily.””
I approached him.
“Hi, Robert.””
He looked at Michael.
Then at Patricia.
Finally, his eyes settled on me.
“I owe you an apology.””
I sat opposite him.
“For what?””
He looked down.
“For something I should have stopped before it happened.””
Margaret opened her notebook.
“Mr. Carter, we need to establish your understanding of the genetic material identified in the clinic records.””
Robert nodded.
“I know.””
He took a breath.
“Years ago, after I had my heart condition diagnosed, my doctor suggested fertility preservation as a precaution. I was worried about the possibility of losing my ability to have another child.””
Patricia frowned.
“Another child?””
Robert turned toward her.
“I never intended to have one without you.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was ashamed of the decision.””
Patricia stared at him.
“You were ashamed, so you hid it from your wife?””
Robert didn't answer.
He continued.
“I stored a sample. It was supposed to remain private and unused unless I personally requested otherwise.””
Margaret wrote something down.
“Did you ever authorize Daniel to access that sample?””
“No.””
“Did you sign a release form?””
“No.””
“Did you give anyone permission to use it in a reproductive treatment?””
“No.””
Michael leaned forward.
“Then how did Daniel get it?””
Robert looked toward the staircase.
“Because I told him where the records were.””
I felt a chill.
“When?””
“After my surgery. I was recovering, and Daniel was helping me organize some paperwork. He found the old fertility documents.””
Robert's voice became weaker.
“He asked whether the sample was still stored. I told him it was.””
“Did you explain that it was restricted?”” Margaret asked.
“Yes.””
“Did you tell him not to use it?””
“Yes.””
Robert looked at me.
“I never gave him permission.””
Patricia began crying again.
“Why would our son do this?””
Robert rubbed his forehead.
“Because he thought he could fix everything.””
I stared at him.
“Fix what?””
He looked toward Michael.
“Daniel always believed he was supposed to be the successful one. The son who carried the family forward.””
Michael shook his head.
“That's ridiculous.””
Robert continued.
“When Michael was diagnosed with his fertility condition, Daniel became obsessed with the idea that the Carter family name would end with him.””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“He could have just asked me.””
“I know.””
Robert looked down.
“He was afraid.””
“Of what?”” I asked.
Robert took a long breath.
“Of being less than the man he wanted everyone to believe he was.””
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Seven years.
Seven years of injections, appointments, and heartbreak.
And the man who had blamed me for destroying his dream had apparently been trying to construct a family that would make him look successful.
Margaret interrupted.
“Mr. Carter, did you know that the embryo was created using Ms. Carter's egg?””
Robert looked at me.
“No.””
“Did you know Vanessa was the recipient?””
“No.””
“Did you know Daniel had represented himself as the biological father?””
Robert shook his head.
“I found out only recently.””
I leaned forward.
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
“What happened?””
Robert reached for a glass of water.
“Daniel came here with Vanessa. He told me they were expecting a child and that there was a complication with the clinic's paperwork.””
“What complication?””
“He said my old donor record had somehow been attached to their treatment.””
I stared.
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to.””
Robert's voice cracked.
“He said the clinic had made an administrative mistake. He asked me to sign a statement confirming that I had voluntarily released the sample.””
Margaret's pen stopped.
“Did you sign?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Robert looked at Patricia.
“Because I remembered what I had told him years earlier. That sample was never meant to be used without my permission.””
I felt my heart beating faster.
“Did Daniel explain why my name was involved?””
Robert nodded.
“He said you had consented to the embryo transfer.””
I shook my head.
“I didn't.””
“I know that now.””
Robert looked devastated.
“I didn't understand the full situation until I saw the document.””
He reached for a drawer beside his chair.
From inside, he removed a folded letter.
“This is what Daniel left behind after our argument.””
Margaret accepted it.
The first paragraph was addressed to Robert.
Dad, I need you to understand that this is for the future of the family. Emily's treatment has failed, and I cannot wait forever. Vanessa is willing to carry the embryo, and everything can remain within the Carter family.
I felt my stomach turn.
Margaret continued reading.
The clinic has agreed to process the paperwork. Michael will be listed as the donor so that the arrangement appears consistent with the family medical history.
Michael stood.
“He planned to use my name from the beginning.””
Robert nodded.
“I believe so.””
Margaret turned the page.
There was another paragraph.
You don't need to be involved. Nobody will know about the original sample, and the child will be raised as mine.
I closed my eyes.
Robert looked at me.
“I should have gone to the clinic immediately.””
“Why didn't you?””
He swallowed.
“Because Daniel told me that if I spoke, Vanessa would lose the baby.””
I stared at him.
“He used the pregnancy to silence you?””
Robert nodded.
“He said the child had already been conceived, and there was no point causing a scandal.””
Patricia stood.
“You let him manipulate you.””
Robert lowered his head.
“Yes.””
The room became quiet.
Then Margaret asked the question I had been waiting for.
“Mr. Carter, do you have any knowledge of whether Daniel's genetic material was ever used in the embryo creation?””
Robert looked confused.
“I don't understand.””
“The original record identifies your sample, but the clinic has found evidence of an altered laboratory identifier. We need to know whether you have any reason to believe the sample could have been switched.””
Robert frowned.
“Switched?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Emily, there is something I haven't told you.””
My hands tightened.
“What?””
Robert looked toward the hallway.
“Daniel once told me that he had another way to become a biological father.””
Michael turned.
“What way?””
Robert shook his head.
“He never explained. He only said the clinic could make it happen.””
Margaret leaned forward.
“Did he mention a different donor?””
Robert nodded.
“One time. He said a donor had already been selected. Someone with the right medical history.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Robert looked at me.
“I don't know the name.””
Then he reached into his pocket and removed a small folded paper.
“I found this inside the letter Daniel left.””
Margaret unfolded it.
It was a handwritten appointment reminder.
The date matched the day before the embryo transfer.
The location was not Northbrook Fertility Center.
It was a private laboratory in Evanston.
Beneath the address were two initials.
*D.C.*
And beside them was a short note.
*Final sample verification. No family notification.*
Michael stared at the paper.
“Why would he go to another laboratory?””
Robert shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Margaret immediately photographed the note.
“This could be important. We need to verify the laboratory and preserve any records connected to the appointment.””
I looked at Robert.
“Did Daniel ever tell you that he had a genetic condition?””
Robert nodded slowly.
“He was tested when he was younger. There was a possibility of a hereditary issue, but he refused to discuss it.””
I froze.
“What kind of issue?””
Robert looked uncomfortable.
“He was told that he might have difficulty having biological children.””
The room went silent.
I remembered Daniel's anger during our fertility treatments.
His refusal to undergo certain tests.
His insistence that the problem was mine.
His fury whenever Dr. Harris suggested additional male-factor testing.
I turned toward Margaret.
“Did Daniel ever complete a sperm analysis?””
She shook her head.
“Not that we've seen.””
I felt something click into place.
Maybe our infertility hadn't been unexplained.
Maybe the explanation had been sitting beside me for seven years.
And Daniel had known.
Margaret closed her folder.
“We need the independent laboratory records before drawing conclusions.””
Robert reached for my hand.
“Emily, I am so sorry.””
I looked at him.
“You didn't do this to me.””
“But I could have stopped it.””
I didn't know what to say.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa.
Emily, please call me. I need to tell you something before Daniel finds out.
I called immediately.
She answered in a whisper.
“Emily?””
“What's wrong?””
“I went to the clinic this morning.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“I requested the final genetic parentage report.””
“And?””
She began crying.
“The clinic gave me a preliminary result.””
“What does it say?””
There was a long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel isn't the biological father.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No, Emily. You don't understand.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“The baby isn't genetically connected to Daniel or Michael.””
I stared at Margaret.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“The laboratory says there may have been a second sample substitution.””
My heart pounded.
“Then whose genetic material was used?””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“I don't know.””
Then she said something that made me feel as though the entire room had disappeared.
“But the clinic has identified another person who signed the final authorization.””
“Who?””
Vanessa whispered a name.
And it wasn't Robert.
It wasn't Daniel.
May you like
It wasn't Michael.
It was Dr. Harris.
