Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Signature

Nobody moved.

Vanessa stood beside the decorated chair, tears running down her cheeks.

Michael looked at her as though he were seeing a stranger.

Daniel kept one hand on the table.

“Everyone needs to calm down,” he said.

Susan Blake closed the folder.

“I suggest we establish the facts before anyone makes further statements.””

Daniel laughed nervously.

“Facts? You're discussing private medical information in front of fifty people.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Then perhaps you should have considered that before inviting Emily to celebrate a pregnancy connected to her medical records.””

A few guests murmured.

Patricia sat down.

“Daniel, what have you done?””

He ignored her.

His attention remained fixed on Vanessa.

“Tell them,” he said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You tell them.””

“Vanessa.””

“You promised me nobody would ever know.””

Michael stepped between them.

“Know what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I'm sorry.””

Michael's voice broke.

“Don't apologize. Explain.””

Susan placed two documents side by side.

“One is the original embryology record. The other is the amended consent package submitted after the embryo transfer was arranged.””

She pointed to the first page.

“This record identifies the genetic material used to create the embryo.””

Then she pointed to the second.

“This document describes a different donor arrangement.””

Michael leaned forward.

“So my sperm wasn't used?””

Susan answered carefully.

“Based on the records currently verified, your genetic material is not identified as part of the embryo transferred to Ms. Reed.””

Michael closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked relieved.

Then he opened them.

“Then why was my name on the paperwork?””

Margaret answered.

“That's one of the central questions in the investigation. The amended document appears to describe you as an intended genetic parent despite the original laboratory record.””

Michael turned toward Daniel.

“You used my name?””

Daniel shook his head.

“You agreed to help.””

“I agreed to donate sperm. I didn't agree to have my name placed on a document that wasn't true.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Michael, I never wanted to hurt you.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You married me. You divorced me. Then you had a baby using an embryo from my brother's fertility treatment. How exactly was I supposed to feel?””

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

“That's enough!””

Several guests jumped.

“You don't understand what happened,” he shouted.

I looked at him.

“Then explain it.””

He turned toward me.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

His voice dropped.

“You couldn't get pregnant. We tried everything. You couldn't give me a child.””

I felt the old pain rise.

But this time, it didn't control me.

“You're still blaming me?””

“You know what I mean.””

“No, Daniel. I don't. Because the clinic's records say three embryos were created.

One was transferred during our treatment. Two were stored. You told me there was nothing left.””

He looked away.

Susan interrupted.

“Actually, Ms. Carter, the original records indicate that the embryo involved in this investigation was created during the treatment cycle you and Mr. Carter underwent together.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“There is also a discrepancy concerning the second genetic contributor.””

My heart began beating faster.

Susan looked at Margaret.

“May I?””

Margaret nodded.

Susan opened the original report.

“The embryo's genetic profile was associated with an egg retrieved from Ms. Carter during the September treatment cycle and sperm collected under a separate laboratory identifier.””

Michael frowned.

“Whose?””

Susan looked at the paper.

“The identifier belongs to a donor record associated with the clinic's legacy fertility program.””

Daniel's face turned white.

I stared at him.

“What donor?””

Susan continued.

“The donor's identity is protected in the medical record, but the clinic's review has established that the sperm source was not Mr. Michael Carter.””

Michael stepped back.

“Then who?””

Daniel shook his head.

“Stop.””

Susan looked at him.

“Mr. Carter, you have already been identified in the consent package as the intended genetic father. We need to clarify that the original laboratory record does not support that claim.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Who told you?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“He did.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Vanessa, don't.””

She turned toward him.

“You told me the embryo was yours.””

I felt the room shift.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel said the clinic had created an embryo using his sperm and your egg during your final cycle. He said the transfer was part of a special arrangement.””

I stared at Daniel.

“But you told me we had no viable embryos.””

He swallowed.

“I was trying to move on.””

“With my embryo?””

He didn't answer.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me you had signed everything. He said you had decided not to continue treatment and had agreed to release the embryos.””

I laughed, but there was no humor in it.

“I never signed anything.””

“I know that now.””

Michael looked at her.

“When did you find out?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“After I became pregnant.””

The room fell silent.

She continued.

“I asked Daniel for the original genetic report because I wanted to know whether the baby had any inherited conditions. He gave me a summary. But when I asked the clinic for the full report, they said they couldn't release it without additional authorization.””

“Then what?”” I asked.

“I started asking questions.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You're making this sound worse than it was.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“I eventually saw the original laboratory identifier. It didn't match the donor information Daniel had given me.””

Michael's face tightened.

“And you stayed with him?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I was already pregnant.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked toward Daniel.

“Of losing the baby.””

I felt an unexpected wave of sadness for her.

Not forgiveness.

Not sympathy for what she had done.

Just the realization that Daniel had used different versions of the same lie to manipulate everyone around him.

He had told me I was incapable of motherhood.

He had told Michael he could become a father.

He had told Vanessa the embryo was genetically his.

And now the original records were beginning to unravel.

Margaret removed another page.

“There's one more issue.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What now?””

“This is the final consent form submitted to the clinic.””

She placed it on the table.

I recognized the heading immediately.

*FINAL GENETIC PARENTAGE AND REPRODUCTIVE CONSENT.*

The same document Vanessa had photographed.

Margaret pointed to the signatures.

“Ms. Carter, your signature appears on this page.””

I looked down.

There it was.

My name.

My handwriting, almost perfectly reproduced.

But beneath it was a timestamp.

September 16, 9:23 p.m.

And next to the approval was an electronic access code.

Margaret continued.

“The clinic has now confirmed that the approval was entered using an administrative account assigned to Dr. Leonard. The account log also shows that Mr. Daniel Carter was present during the document submission.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's not proof of anything.””

Susan opened a second folder.

“There's also an audio-recorded verification call.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“The clinic's records show that a verification call was made to confirm the joint authorization. The call was recorded as part of the clinic's standard consent procedure.””

Margaret looked at me.

“Emily, do you remember receiving a call from the clinic that evening?””

“No.””

Susan pressed a button on her laptop.

A recording began.

A man's voice spoke first.

“Patient verification. Please confirm your full name.””

Then another voice answered.

“Emily Carter.””

My stomach dropped.

It sounded like me.

Almost exactly like me.

The recording continued.

“Do you authorize the release of the stored embryo for the intended recipient?””

“Yes.””

“Do you understand that the embryo will no longer remain available for your future treatment?””

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

That wasn't me.

I had never made that call.

Then the voice said something that made the entire room go silent.

“I just want Daniel to be happy. He deserves to be a father.””

I felt Michael's hand touch my shoulder.

The recording ended.

Daniel looked at the floor.

Vanessa was crying openly now.

Patricia stared at her son.

“Daniel, whose voice was that?””

Nobody answered.

Margaret replayed the final few seconds.

The voice was clear.

But this time, I heard something else.

A faint sound in the background.

A man's voice.

“Tell them you're Emily. Just answer the questions.””

My blood turned cold.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it thousands of times.

It belonged to Daniel.

I looked at him.

“You coached someone to impersonate me.””

He shook his head.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“Who made that call?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“It was me.””

Michael stepped backward.

Patricia gasped.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You pretended to be me?””

She nodded, crying.

“Daniel said it was the only way. He told me the clinic already had your consent and that I was just confirming the details.””

“You used my name?””

“I thought you had agreed.””

“You said you knew the embryo wasn't Michael's.””

“I found out later.””

“And you still let them use my identity?””

Vanessa broke down.

“I was desperate to have a child.””

I felt my voice become strangely calm.

“So was I.””

She looked up.

For the first time, she seemed to understand what she had done.

Margaret turned toward Daniel.

“Mr. Carter, the clinic's legal team has preserved the original recording and account logs. Your involvement is now part of the formal investigation.””

Daniel's face twisted.

“You can't prove I knew she was impersonating Emily.””

I looked at him.

“You were standing beside her?””

He said nothing.

“You told me I destroyed your dream of fatherhood. You made me believe my body was the problem. And while I was signing divorce papers, you were arranging for someone else to carry an embryo created during our marriage.””

Daniel finally raised his eyes.

“You don't understand why I did it.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then at Michael.

Then back at me.

“I wanted a child who was biologically mine.””

Susan closed the folder.

“Mr. Carter, the original genetic report does not establish that you are the biological father.””

Daniel went completely still.

I stared at him.

“Then whose sperm was used?””

Susan looked at the original laboratory record.

She hesitated.

Then she turned the final page around.

There was a name beneath the donor identifier.

A name I recognized immediately.

And when Patricia saw it, she let out a sound that was almost a scream.

Because the man listed as the genetic contributor was not a stranger.

May you like

He was someone Daniel had spent his entire life calling his father.

And the final consent form revealed why he had been so desperate to keep that name hidden.
