Chapter 6: The Mother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody moved.

The photograph lay on the kitchen table beneath the morning sunlight, its glossy surface reflecting the faces of five people who could no longer trust what they believed.

Amara reached for it with trembling fingers.

“No,” she whispered.

“That's impossible.””

She knew every detail of her mother's face. The gentle curve of her mouth. The tiny scar near her eyebrow from a childhood fall. The way her hair curled at the ends when the weather turned damp.

The woman in the photograph had all of them.

She was older, thinner, and wearing sunglasses.

But she was Grace.

Amara looked up at Andrew Collins.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was found among the documents in Thomas Carter's private safe after his death.””

“When was it taken?””

“According to the date printed on the back, three weeks ago.””

Richard gripped the edge of the table.

“Who took it?””

Andrew shook his head.

“We don't know. But the photograph was accompanied by a note.””

He handed Amara a folded piece of paper.

The message contained only one sentence.

If the girl marries Elijah, the truth will come out.

Amara stared at the words.

Her mother was alive.

Or someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to make her believe that she was.

Elijah paced toward the window.

“This could be a trick. Someone could be using an old photograph.””

“It's not old,” Amara said.

Her voice was barely audible.

She turned the photograph over again, studying the date and the background. Behind Grace stood a modern black sedan with a license plate she didn't recognize.

The building beside her wasn't the Carter estate's main house.

It was the private medical clinic where Thomas had received treatment during his final months.

Amara remembered seeing the clinic's name in the paperwork.

“She's been there,” she said.

“Recently.””

Andrew nodded.

“That's what I believe.””

Richard rose unsteadily.

“If Grace is alive, I want to know why she left us.””

Amara looked at him.

“Dad, what if she never left us?””

Richard's face crumpled.

“What are you saying?””

“What if someone made us believe she was dead?””

He sat down again, his hands covering his mouth.

For eleven years, he had visited Grace's grave every anniversary of her death. He had brought flowers, cleaned the headstone, and stood alone in the cemetery until sunset.

If Grace had been alive all this time, every memory had become a question.

Every tear.

Every unanswered prayer.

Amara reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

“We're going to find her.””

Andrew cleared his throat.

“There is one more thing.””

Elijah turned toward him.

“Of course there is.””

Andrew opened the leather briefcase and removed a sealed document bearing the Carter family crest.

“This is a supplementary clause to the trust agreement. Thomas instructed me to disclose it only after Miss Williams's parentage was established and the original agreement was recovered.””

He placed it in front of Amara.

She read the first paragraph.

The trust contained twenty-eight million dollars, along with several properties and shares in Carter Holdings. But the document also established that Amara was entitled to vote a controlling block of shares if certain conditions were met.

Her twenty-fifth birthday was only six days away.

If the original transfer had been valid, she would become one of the most powerful shareholders in the company.

But there was another condition.

If evidence emerged that the trust had been fraudulently administered, the beneficiary could demand an independent audit of all related accounts dating back eleven years.

Amara looked at Andrew.

“Who has been managing the trust?””

“The trustee of record is Vanessa Williams.””

The room went silent.

Richard rose so abruptly that his chair fell backward.

“Vanessa?””

Andrew nodded.

“Thomas appointed her temporary administrator shortly after Grace's death. The arrangement was supposed to last six months, but the extensions were repeatedly approved using documents signed in your name, Mr. Williams.””

Richard stared at him.

“I never signed anything.””

“Then someone forged your signature.””

Amara looked at the pages spread across the table.

Vanessa had not merely destroyed her wedding dress.

She had spent eleven years controlling the money that belonged to Amara, concealing documents, and possibly arranging the death of her mother.

And now that Amara was about to marry Elijah, the trust was about to become legally reviewable.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Vanessa wasn't trying to stop the wedding because Brielle wanted Elijah.

She was trying to stop it because the wedding could expose the fraud.

Brielle's jealousy had become the perfect distraction.

Amara pushed back her chair.

“I want every account audited. Every transfer. Every document.””

Andrew nodded.

“I can begin the process today.””

“And I want Vanessa arrested if there's evidence she forged my father's signature.””

“That decision belongs to the authorities, but I'll provide them with the records.””

Elijah approached her.

“Amara, you don't have to face this alone.””

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Then stop keeping secrets from me.””

“I will.””

“Even if the truth hurts?””

He held her gaze.

“Especially then.””

A phone rang.

It was Richard's.

He looked at the screen and frowned.

“It's Vanessa's number.””

Amara gestured for him to answer.

Richard put the call on speaker.

Vanessa's voice filled the kitchen.

“Richard, darling, we need to talk.””

“Where are you?”” he demanded.

“Somewhere safe. The police have made a terrible mistake, and I'm sure we can resolve this like adults.””

“You arranged for men to kidnap me.””

“I was trying to protect this family!””

“You tried to destroy my daughter's life.””

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

“Amara has always been impulsive. She doesn't understand what she's doing.””

Amara leaned toward the phone.

“Then explain it to me.””

Silence.

“Amara?”” Vanessa said.

“I'm listening. Tell me why you destroyed my wedding dress. Tell me why you stole money from my trust. Tell me why you have my mother's pendant.””

Vanessa's voice hardened.

“You have no idea what your mother did.””

“Then tell me.””

“Your mother was alive when she should have been dead.””

Richard slammed his palm against the table.

“Vanessa!””

But Amara raised a hand.

“Let her speak.””

Vanessa continued.

“Grace made a deal with Thomas. She was supposed to disappear and never contact either family again. In return, she would receive enough money to start a new life.””

Amara's throat tightened.

“You knew she was alive?””

“I knew she was supposed to stay away.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

“Yes. I knew.””

Richard's voice broke.

“You let me bury an empty grave?””

“I didn't make you bury anything!””

“You told me she was dead!””

“Because it was the only way to keep you from destroying everything!””

Amara gripped the edge of the table.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Do you think she'll come running back to you? Your mother chose money over her own daughter.””

“That's a lie.””

“Is it? Ask yourself why she never came home.””

Amara felt tears sliding down her cheeks.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“If you cancel the wedding, I'll tell you.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“Don't make another deal with her, Amara.””

Vanessa heard him.

“Oh, Elijah. Still playing the hero? Your father would be ashamed of you.””

Elijah's face tightened.

“You don't get to speak for my father.””

“Then perhaps you'd like to know what he told me the night he died.””

Amara leaned closer to the phone.

“What did he tell you?””

Vanessa paused.

“He told me that if you ever discovered the truth about your birth, you would destroy the Carter family just as your mother had tried to do.””

The line went dead.

Richard immediately called back, but the number was no longer available.

Andrew stood.

“I'll contact the police and request an urgent search for her.””

“No,” Amara said.

Everyone turned toward her.

“She wants me to cancel the wedding. She wants me frightened, confused, and desperate enough to bargain with her.””

Amara wiped her face.

“I'm done playing by her rules.””

She looked at Elijah.

“Is the ceremony still scheduled for noon?””

He nodded cautiously.

“Yes.””

“Then we're going.””

Richard stared at her.

“Sweetheart, after everything that's happened, you don't have to marry him today.””

“I know.””

“You could postpone it.””

“I could.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“Amara, if you want to cancel, I'll understand. I won't pressure you.””

She looked at him.

For the first time that morning, she allowed herself to imagine walking into the church without fear of what Vanessa might say.

She imagined the music beginning. The guests turning. Elijah waiting at the altar.

And she imagined her mother, somewhere in the world, watching the life she had left behind unfold without her.

“I want to marry you,” Amara said.

“But not because of the trust. Not because of your father. Not because of some agreement made before I was born.””

She took his hand.

“I want to marry you because I love you. And I want to find out what happened to my mother because I deserve the truth.””

Elijah pressed her hand to his lips.

“Then we'll do both.””

Richard looked at his daughter, his eyes shining.

“Your mother would be proud of you.””

Amara smiled faintly.

“I hope so.””

An hour later, the police escorted them back to the house to collect the remaining documents. Andrew left to begin the audit, while Daniel agreed to provide a formal statement.

Brielle sat alone on the staircase.

When Amara approached, her stepsister stood.

“Are you really going to marry him?””

“Yes.””

Brielle looked down at her hands.

“I thought if you lost the dress, you'd lose everything.””

Amara studied her.

“Why did you help Vanessa?””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she promised me Elijah would choose me if you disappeared from the picture. She said your wedding was the only thing standing between me and the life I deserved.””

“You knew he didn't love you.””

“I thought I could make him.””

Amara shook her head.

“You can't force someone to love you by destroying the person they chose.””

Brielle began to cry.

“Can you ever forgive me?””

“Not today.””

Amara walked past her.

At the top of the stairs, she stopped and looked back.

“But if you want to make things right, tell the police everything you know.””

Brielle nodded.

Amara entered her bedroom and closed the door.

The crimson wedding gown hung beside the window, its silver embroidery catching the morning light.

She fastened the small silver pendant around her neck, then opened the red box one final time.

Beneath the legal documents lay a folded sheet of paper she hadn't noticed before.

It contained an address.

A date.

And a handwritten message in her mother's familiar script.

Amara, if you ever find this, come alone.

I have waited eleven years to tell you why I had to leave.

But there is something I must warn you about first.

The man you are about to marry is not the only person who has been searching for me.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

*Brielle Williams.*

Amara stared at it, her blood turning cold.

Then she heard a knock at the door.

“Amara?”” Brielle called softly from the hallway.

“There's something I need to tell you before you go to the church.””

Amara folded the letter and opened the door.

Brielle stood there, pale and shaking.

“Your mother didn't die,” she whispered.

“But she's not the only one Vanessa helped disappear.””

She glanced over her shoulder.

May you like

Then she leaned close and delivered the final revelation.

“Your real father is still alive, Amara.””
