Chapter 6: The Company They Thought They Owned

I read the document three times before I could understand what it meant.

The Williams Legacy Trust held the controlling shares of Williams Industrial Group, the company my grandfather had founded forty-two years earlier and my father had expanded into a national manufacturing business.

I knew the company was successful.

I'd attended holiday dinners where executives praised my father for increasing revenue. I'd heard relatives brag about the family's wealth.

But I'd never imagined that my grandfather had placed control of the company into a private trust with my name attached to it.

"Dad," I whispered, "is this real?""

Richard sat down slowly.

"I believe it is.""

"You own the company.""

"I manage it," he corrected.

"Your grandfather retained a controlling interest through the trust. I run the business under the authority granted to me by the trustees.""

"And now?""

He looked at the document.

"If this designation is valid, the controlling shares belong to you.""

I felt dizzy.

"But I'm twenty-two. I don't know anything about running a company.""

"That's not a problem," he said.

"Ownership and management are different things. You can appoint qualified people to manage the business while you learn how it works.""

Tessa stared at the page.

"Wait. Does this mean Zarya could fire everyone?""

"Not automatically," my father replied.

"Corporate governance is complicated. We need Evelyn and the company's lawyers to confirm the trust's authority and determine what rights the shares carry.""

I appreciated that he didn't promise me a miracle.

I'd had enough people telling me things were guaranteed.

Still, I couldn't stop looking at my name.

Zarya Williams.

Sole beneficiary of the Williams Legacy Trust.

For the first time in my life, I had to consider that the family I had believed was constantly struggling might have been far wealthier than I'd ever known.

And that the people who had made me feel powerless might have been depending on me never discovering the truth.

The next morning, Evelyn Price arrived at nine sharp.

She was in her late sixties, wore a navy suit, and carried a leather briefcase secured with two brass clasps. Her silver hair was pinned neatly at the back of her head.

She shook my father's hand, then turned to me.

"You must be Zarya.""

"Yes.""

She studied my face for a moment.

"Your grandfather would have been pleased to see you graduate.""

My throat tightened.

"You knew him well?""

"I knew him well enough to understand why he made certain decisions.""

She placed the briefcase on the table.

"Before we begin, I need to make one thing clear. I am not here to punish anyone. I'm here to establish what happened, protect the trust's assets, and ensure that the law is followed.""

My father nodded.

"That's all I want.""

Evelyn opened the briefcase and removed several original documents.

"The education trust was created to give Zarya financial independence. The Legacy Trust was created for a different reason.""

She placed a corporate chart in front of us.

"Samuel Williams believed the company would eventually become a source of conflict within the family. He worried that relatives would use their positions to control one another.""

I looked at my father.

"Did Grandpa think Damon would do that?""

"He worried about everyone," Evelyn answered.

"Including himself.""

She pointed to the chart.

"Your grandfather placed a controlling block of shares into the Legacy Trust. Your father was appointed managing director, but he was not given unrestricted ownership of those shares.""

My father examined the chart.

"I knew I didn't personally own all the shares. I didn't know Zarya was the designated beneficiary.""

"Samuel deliberately kept that designation sealed. He wanted the trust to remain separate from family pressure until a specific event triggered its disclosure.""

"Which was the misuse of my education trust," I said.

"Correct.""

Evelyn slid another document toward me.

"Your grandfather anticipated that someone might attempt to manipulate your finances while you were young. If the education trust was misused, the Legacy Trust's protective provisions would activate.""

I looked at the page.

"What happens now?""

"First, the court and the company's legal advisers must confirm that the beneficiary designation is valid and determine the precise scope of your rights. Second, we need to investigate the unauthorized transactions. Third, any attempt to interfere with the trust must be documented and addressed.""

My father nodded.

"Has Monica interfered with the company?""

Evelyn looked at him.

"I believe that's a question we need to investigate.""

She removed a final folder from her briefcase.

"Three years ago, someone submitted a request to change the voting authorization associated with the trust's shares. The request was rejected because the signature did not match the original authorization.""

My father leaned forward.

"Who submitted it?""

Evelyn turned the page.

"Monica Williams.""

The room went silent.

My father looked stunned.

"She tried to change control of the company?""

"She requested authority to vote the shares on behalf of the beneficiary. At the time, I had no reason to believe she had any legal standing to do so.""

I stared at the document.

"Why would she try to control a company she didn't own?""

Evelyn folded her hands.

"That's something we must establish through evidence rather than speculation.""

My father stood and walked toward the window.

For several moments, he said nothing.

Then he turned back.

"Did she ever contact you directly?""

"Twice. Once to ask about the trust's future distributions, and once to request a copy of the sealed beneficiary designation.""

"Did you give it to her?""

"Of course not.""

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"After the second request, I informed Samuel's estate attorney. We agreed that the designation should remain sealed unless the specified condition occurred.""

I thought about Monica's reaction the previous afternoon.

She hadn't looked surprised when the education trust was mentioned. She'd looked terrified.

Perhaps she'd known that the missing money could trigger something much bigger than a repayment demand.

My father returned to his chair.

"Could Monica have been trying to obtain control of the company through Damon?""

Evelyn didn't answer immediately.

"Possibly. But we should not reach conclusions until we have reviewed the documents.""

She removed a separate set of records.

"There's another issue. The company recently received a request to transfer a portion of the voting shares to a private holding company.""

My father frowned.

"I never approved that.""

"Neither did I.""

"Who signed the request?""

Evelyn turned the page toward us.

The signature line bore the name of the proposed holding company: MW Strategic Holdings.

I recognized the initials immediately.

Monica Williams.

My father reached for the document.

"Is this a registered company?""

"Yes. It was incorporated eighteen months ago.""

"By Monica?""

"According to the public filing, she is the sole director.""

I stared at the paperwork.

"Did she actually transfer any shares?""

"The request was blocked before the transfer could be completed," Evelyn said.

"But the attempt itself needs to be investigated.""

My father pressed his fingers against his forehead.

"How did I miss all of this?""

Evelyn's voice softened slightly.

"Because you trusted your wife to act in good faith. Trust is not a crime, Richard. But once you discover that trust may have been abused, you have a responsibility to respond.""

He nodded slowly.

I watched him struggle with the truth.

He'd built his life around the belief that hard work and loyalty would protect his family. Now he was discovering that the people he had trusted most had been making plans behind his back.

I understood that feeling better than I wanted to.

Evelyn turned toward me.

"Zarya, there's something you should know before you make any decisions about the company.""

I straightened.

"What?""

"Your grandfather did not choose you because he expected you to become wealthy. He chose you because he believed you were the least likely person in the family to use money as a weapon.""

I looked down at my hands.

"I don't know if I'm the right person for this.""

"You don't need to know everything today. You need to be willing to learn, ask questions, and refuse to let anyone pressure you into decisions you don't understand.""

My father reached for my hand.

"She's right.""

For the first time, I felt that my future might belong to me.

Not because I had inherited something valuable, but because I finally had a choice.

Then Evelyn's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen and answered.

"Ms. Price speaking.""

A man's voice came through faintly.

She listened without interrupting.

Then her expression changed.

"You're certain?""

Another pause.

"Send me the file immediately. Do not contact the other party.""

She ended the call and slowly set the phone down.

My father stood.

"What happened?""

Evelyn looked at both of us.

"The company has received a formal notice from a creditor claiming that Williams Industrial Group guaranteed a private loan.""

My father's face tightened.

"The company did not guarantee any private loan.""

"According to the notice, the loan is secured by a document bearing your signature.""

He shook his head.

"That's impossible.""

Evelyn opened her briefcase and took out a printed copy of the filing that had just been emailed to her.

She laid it on the table.

At the bottom of the page was a signature that looked almost identical to my father's.

But the name of the borrower wasn't Monica.

It wasn't Damon, either.

It was a company I'd never heard of.

And beside the borrower's name was a figure that made my father grip the edge of the table.

*Twelve million dollars.*

Evelyn looked up.

"If this document is genuine, the company could face a serious financial crisis.""

My father stared at the signature.

Then he whispered the words that made my stomach drop.

"I've never seen this document in my life.""

Evelyn closed the folder.

"Then someone may have forged your signature.""

May you like

She paused.

"And whoever did it may have known that Zarya was about to become the person with the power to stop them.""
