Chapter 4: The Call That Exposed Everything
“Emily, darling, bring your phone upstairs. We need to discuss that scholarship privately.””
Vanessa's voice floated down the staircase, sweet enough to make my skin crawl.
I stood beside Dad at the kitchen table, staring at the email from Pacific Horizons Youth Foundation. Kendra was beside me, one hand resting on the back of my chair.
“No,” I called back.
The silence upstairs was immediate.
Dad looked at me, surprised.
Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs, holding a folded sweater and wearing the careful expression she used whenever company visited.
“What did you say?””
“I said I'll talk about the scholarship right here.””
Her fingers tightened around the sweater.
“This is a family matter.””
“Then there's no reason to hide it from my family.””
Kendra coughed to conceal a laugh.
Vanessa shot her a look.
“Go to your room, Kendra.””
“No, thanks.””
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
For a moment, the three of us stood frozen in a standoff that would have seemed ridiculous if my future weren't hanging in the balance.
Dad finally broke the silence.
“Vanessa, we aren't doing this anymore. Sit down.””
She descended the stairs slowly, her heels clicking against each step.
“I am trying to protect Emily from making a mistake.””
“What mistake?”” Dad asked.
“Leaving for six weeks without understanding the consequences.””
“The foundation has already explained the program.””
“Not everything is about paperwork, Daniel!””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“And not everything is about what you want.””
The words seemed to surprise him as much as they surprised Vanessa.
She lowered herself into a chair.
I opened the email again and tapped the foundation's phone number.
“I'm calling them.””
Vanessa immediately reached across the table.
“Don't you dare.””
I pulled my phone away.
Dad caught Vanessa's wrist before she could reach me.
“Let her call.””
Her eyes widened.
“You're taking her side?””
“I'm taking the side of the truth.””
I pressed the call button.
A receptionist answered after two rings.
“Pacific Horizons Youth Foundation. This is Melissa. How may I help you?””
“Hi. My name is Emily Carter. I received an email about my travel placement, and I think someone may have contacted your office about me.””
There was a pause.
“Ms. Carter, thank you for calling. Before we discuss the details, could you confirm the reference number on your acceptance letter?””
I read it aloud.
Melissa typed something.
“Thank you. I can confirm that your award is legitimate and that your acceptance remains under review. However, we received a communication earlier today from someone claiming to be your authorized family representative.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
“I can't disclose personal information about the caller without completing our verification process, but I can tell you that the person requested that your placement be withdrawn.””
Dad stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
“What?”” he demanded.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Did they give a reason?”” I asked.
“The caller stated that you were experiencing serious financial instability and that your household could not support your participation.””
I stared at Vanessa.
She looked away.
Melissa continued.
“The caller also suggested that you had applied without your family's consent and might not be able to travel safely.””
“That is completely false,” I said.
“I understand. That's why we contacted you directly. Ms.
Carter, the award is yours. Your family does not have the authority to withdraw it on your behalf. We simply need to confirm that you still wish to participate.””
“Yes,” I answered immediately.
“I do.””
Vanessa slammed her palm on the table.
“Emily!””
Melissa heard her.
“Is someone pressuring you right now?””
“No,” I said, looking directly at Vanessa.
“I'm fine. I want to accept the placement.””
“Very well. I'll document your confirmation. We'll send you the acceptance form and travel checklist tomorrow. Please do not share your verification code with anyone else.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Dad turned toward Vanessa.
“You tried to cancel her award?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was asking questions.””
“You told someone she couldn't travel.””
“I was concerned!””
“You said she was financially unstable.””
“Look around this house, Daniel! We're drowning in bills!””
“Because you transferred our vacation money to Richard?””
Her face changed.
“Don't drag Richard into this.””
“You dragged him into our finances!””
Kendra stood up.
“Mom, who is he?””
Vanessa ignored her.
She leaned toward Dad, lowering her voice as if the rest of us had suddenly become furniture.
“Daniel, you don't understand what Richard is going through. He needed help. I made a decision, and I was going to replace the money before you noticed.””
“Then why blame Emily?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward me.
“Because she was already asking for money!””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Forty dollars,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
“That was the last money I borrowed from Dad. Forty dollars for a car battery. I paid it back. You used that to make me look like a thief because you needed someone else to blame.””
Vanessa stood.
“You have no idea what it means to manage a household.””
“No. But I know what it means to be lied about in my own home.””
Her face reddened.
“After everything I've done for you—”
“What have you done for me?”” I asked.
The question came out quietly.
That made it worse.
Vanessa stared at me, apparently searching for a response that would put her back in control.
Dad answered first.
“That's enough, Vanessa.””
She turned toward him.
“You're going to let her speak to me like that?””
“I'm going to let her go to Hawaii if she wants to.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
Dad picked up the acceptance papers.
“Emily, we'll work out the remaining details tomorrow. You won't need to pay for the flight or accommodation. If there's anything else you need, we'll discuss it.””
I nodded, barely trusting myself to speak.
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
“Fine. Send her to Hawaii. Let her abandon this family like everyone else eventually does.””
Kendra stepped forward.
“Emily isn't abandoning anyone. She's accepting an opportunity.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“You've changed since you started spending so much time with her.””
“No,” Kendra replied.
“I've just started noticing things.””
Vanessa stormed out of the kitchen.
The front door slammed hard enough to rattle the framed photographs in the hallway.
Dad sank into his chair and covered his face.
“I don't know how things got this bad,” he whispered.
Kendra sat beside him.
“Dad, you believed her without checking.””
He looked up.
“I know.””
“You let her blame Emily for something she didn't do.””
“I know, Kendra.””
His voice cracked.
For the first time that night, I felt sorry for him.
But I wasn't ready to forgive him.
Not yet.
“I need you to understand something, Dad,” I said.
“I'm going to Hawaii. I'm not doing it to punish Vanessa, and I'm not doing it to prove anything to you. I'm doing it because I earned this.””
He nodded slowly.
“You're right.””
I took the papers upstairs.
For the first time in months, I pulled my suitcase from beneath the bed and placed it beside my desk.
Then I opened the foundation's email and began completing the acceptance form.
Halfway through, another message arrived.
It was from Melissa.
The subject line read: *Additional Information Regarding Your Nomination.*
I opened it.
Ms. Carter, your nomination was accompanied by a letter from your volunteer coordinator. She specifically requested that we ensure you had a safe, independent route to the program should you encounter any family or financial obstacles.
Beneath the message was a scanned copy of the letter.
The signature belonged to Mrs. Bennett.
But the last paragraph made my hands tremble.
Emily has repeatedly demonstrated that she can take responsibility for herself. I hope this award gives her the chance to discover that she does not need permission from everyone around her to build a meaningful future.
I read the words twice.
Then my phone buzzed again.
A text from Kendra.
*Kendra: Mom just called someone. I heard her say, “If Emily gets on that plane, Richard is going to expose everything.””*
I stared at the message.
Vanessa hadn't merely been trying to control my future.
May you like
She was terrified of what might happen when I left.
And whatever Richard knew, it was serious enough to make her risk everything to keep me home.
