Chapter 9: The Memory
The car remained motionless in the middle of the empty road.
Rain hammered against the windshield.
Aaliyah looked from Marcus to her father.
“What did he mean?””
Nobody answered.
She turned toward David.
“Dad?””
David looked devastated.
“Aaliyah…”
“What happened the night I killed you?””
“You didn't kill me.””
“Then why would he say that?””
“Because he wants you to believe you did.””
Marcus turned the car around.
“We need to move.””
“No.””
“Aaliyah—”
“No!””
She slammed her palm against the dashboard.
“You've all been lying to me for years. I'm done being the last person to know what happened.””
Marcus pulled the car to the side.
Aaliyah stared at him.
“Tell me everything.””
He looked at David.
David nodded.
Marcus turned off the engine.
“Okay.””
The silence inside the car felt heavier than the storm outside.
Marcus spoke first.
“You were nineteen.””
Aaliyah frowned.
“I don't remember that night.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because someone made sure you wouldn't.””
Aaliyah's stomach tightened.
David looked out the window.
“Your mother had discovered the money trail.””
Marcus continued.
“She found out Denise was working with a man named Victor Hale.””
“Who is he?””
“The man behind everything.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“Why would Denise work for him?””
“Because he threatened her son.””
Aaliyah stared.
“Her son?””
“Your cousin Ethan.””
She remembered Ethan.
He had moved overseas years ago.
At least, that was what Denise had told everyone.
Aaliyah whispered, “Where is he?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Dead.””
Her breath caught.
“Victor killed him?””
“Because Denise tried to stop.””
Aaliyah covered her mouth.
David spoke softly.
“Denise wasn't innocent. But she wasn't the mastermind.””
“Then what happened?””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“The night you supposedly killed your father, you weren't alone.””
Aaliyah closed her eyes.
A strange image flashed through her mind.
A hallway.
Broken glass.
Her father's voice shouting.
Her mother crying.
A door slamming.
Then darkness.
She opened her eyes.
“I remember something.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“What?””
“A red coat.””
David's face went pale.
Aaliyah looked at him.
“You were wearing a red coat.””
David nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And Mom was screaming.””
“Yes.””
“Someone was holding a gun.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
Aaliyah's breathing became shallow.
“Who?””
David answered.
“Denise.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“No.””
“She came to the house that night.””
“Why?””
“To take the evidence.””
Aaliyah looked down at her hands.
“I remember Dad grabbing her.””
David closed his eyes.
“She fired.””
Aaliyah gasped.
The memory came back in fragments.
A gunshot.
Her father's body falling.
Her mother screaming.
A man running through the doorway.
Aaliyah picking up the gun.
Then—
Nothing.
“What happened next?””
Marcus looked at David.
David whispered, “You fired the gun.””
Aaliyah's face went white.
“I shot you?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
“The man who was standing behind me.””
Aaliyah stared.
“Who?””
Marcus's voice was quiet.
“Victor Hale.””
Aaliyah shook her head.
“But I remember pulling the trigger.””
“You did.””
“Then—”
“You shot Victor.””
Silence.
Aaliyah's mouth opened.
“You killed him?””
“No,” David said.
Aaliyah stared.
“He survived.””
Marcus continued.
“He used that moment to frame you.””
“For killing my father.””
“Yes.””
“But why?””
“Because you were the only person who could identify him.””
Aaliyah's mind raced.
“So they made everyone believe I killed Dad.””
David nodded.
“Then they staged my death.””
“And Mom?””
“Disappeared.””
Aaliyah looked at Marcus.
“And you?””
“I was assigned to protect you.””
“By my mother.””
“Yes.””
“That's why you came into my life.””
“Yes.””
“And the marriage?””
Marcus looked down.
“The marriage started as protection.””
Aaliyah's heart cracked.
She whispered, “But did it become real?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Every part of it.””
She searched his face.
“You loved me?””
“Yes.””
“Even when I was impossible?””
A faint, sad smile appeared.
“Especially then.””
Aaliyah almost laughed through her tears.
Then David suddenly reached for the radio.
“Turn around.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because Victor isn't dead.””
Marcus went still.
“What?””
David stared at him.
“He survived the shooting.””
Aaliyah felt cold.
“You said he was alive.””
David nodded.
“But he isn't just alive.””
He looked at Aaliyah.
“He's been working with someone inside our family.””
Marcus's phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.*
Then another.
*BRING AALIYAH TO THE OLD CHURCH.*
Marcus showed them the screen.
David shook his head.
“No.””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because that's where they held the funeral.””
Marcus's face tightened.
“The funeral wasn't for your father.””
David nodded.
“It was a trap.””
Aaliyah looked toward the rain-covered road.
“Then why are they sending us there?””
No one answered.
Another message arrived.
This time, it contained a photograph.
Aaliyah stared.
It showed her mother.
Alive.
Bound to a chair.
And beside her stood Denise.
Aaliyah's blood ran cold.
Under the photograph were four words:
*BRING YOUR FATHER TOO.*
David whispered, “They have her.””
Aaliyah grabbed Marcus's arm.
“We have to go.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“They have Mom!””
“They want us there.””
“Then we go.””
“It's a trap.””
“I don't care.””
Marcus looked into her eyes.
“Aaliyah, if we go there without a plan, your mother dies.””
Aaliyah's tears spilled.
“Then make a plan.””
Marcus stared at her.
For the first time since he had walked out of their apartment, something changed in his expression.
He reached into his backpack.
Pulled out a small recorder.
And placed it in Aaliyah's hand.
“If we're going to expose them,” he said, “we need Denise to confess.””
Aaliyah looked at the recorder.
“How?””
Marcus started the engine.
“By giving her exactly what she thinks she wants.””
“What?””
Marcus looked at David in the rearview mirror.
“Your father.””
Aaliyah turned.
David's eyes were fixed on the church in the distance.
And then he said something that made her blood run cold.
“There's one problem.””
“What?””
David looked at his daughter.
“I wasn't the person they wanted at that funeral.””
He paused.
“The body in that coffin belonged to someone else.””
Aaliyah's voice trembled.
“Who?””
David looked toward the old church.
“The man Victor Hale killed twenty-seven years ago.””
The car sped toward the church.

And for the first time, Aaliyah realized the truth wasn't simply about who had betrayed her.
It was about who had been protecting her all along.
