Chapter 5: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
I drove home through the rain with my father's confession on the passenger seat and the hospital bracelet wrapped around my fingers.
Margaret's final words followed me all the way back to the house.
Ask Ethan what he did to their daughter.
Every answer seemed to open another wound.
When I reached home, Vanessa was waiting on the porch. She wore the same clothes she'd worn the night before, and her eyes were swollen from crying.
I nearly drove past her.
Instead, I stopped.
“Where's Lily?”” I asked.
“At your neighbor's house. I took her there when you left.””
I stared at her.
“You took my daughter out of my house without asking me?””
“She was frightened. I thought—”
“You don't get to think for her anymore.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
I stepped onto the porch.
“Who was Samuel?””
She glanced toward the street before answering.
“Emily believed Samuel was the key to finding your biological parents.””
“Was he my brother?””
“I don't know.””
“Was he Ethan's child?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know that either.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“You seem to know a lot about people you can't identify.””
“I know what Emily told me. I know what I saw. And I know your mother has spent years trying to keep the past buried.””
I held up the document.
“Then tell me why Margaret says Ethan did something to my biological parents' daughter.””
Vanessa's face changed.
For a moment, I thought she might faint.
“Emily never told you about the girl?””
“No.””
“Her name was Grace.””
I waited.
“Grace Cole was six when she vanished,” Vanessa continued.
“She was the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Cole. Your biological parents.””
I gripped the porch railing.
“What happened to her?””
“Ethan was investigating the adoption records. He found evidence that Grace had been moved to another family under a false identity. He tried to get her back.””
“And?””
“He failed.””
“That doesn't explain what he did.””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“He took another child.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Ethan believed the only way to expose your father's operation was to recover a child from one of the families involved. He found a little girl whose identity had been changed and tried to remove her from the home where she was living.””
“Was the child Grace?””
“No.””
“Then who was she?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
“I don't know. Emily said Ethan brought the girl to a safe house, but before he could arrange for her to be reunited with her family, someone found them. The child was taken away. Ethan disappeared shortly afterward.””
I shook my head.
“Why would he take a child?””
“He thought he was saving her.””
“That's what everyone says when they want to excuse something terrible.””
Vanessa flinched.
“I know.””
I looked through the window at the empty hallway.
Emily's shoes were still in the closet. Lily's drawings were still taped to the refrigerator. The house looked exactly as it had before I'd learned that the foundations of my life were rotten.
But I couldn't live inside those familiar walls without wondering which memories were real.
“Why did Emily hide all of this from me?”” I asked.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“She was afraid you would go looking for your biological parents. She thought your father had made sure they could never reach you.””
“Did she know where they were?””
“I believe she did.””
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“There's a name in the records. A woman who helped your father arrange the placements. Emily said she was the only person who could explain everything.””
“What name?””
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
“Margaret.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
My mother had been at the center of everything.
I took out my phone and called her again.
She didn't answer.
I called a second time.
Then a third.
Finally, a text appeared.
Come alone if you want the truth.
An address followed.
A small house in a town twenty miles north of Hartford.
I recognized it immediately.
It was the house where Ethan and I had spent summers as children, before our father became wealthy enough to move us into a mansion with a swimming pool and a private driveway.
Our mother had sold it after Dad died.
At least, that was what she'd told us.
I looked at Vanessa.
“I'm going there.””
She grabbed my sleeve.
“Daniel, don't go alone.””
“You've spent years hiding the truth. I'm done letting you decide what I can handle.””
She released me.
Then she said something that made me stop.
“Emily went there the night before the accident.””
I turned.
“How do you know?””
“Because she called me from the driveway. She said Margaret had shown her something that changed everything. She was crying so hard I could barely understand her.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She said, ‘If Daniel ever finds out who his father really was, he'll never forgive me.’”
I drove to the old house.
The building stood behind a row of overgrown hedges, its white paint peeling and its front windows dark. A single light glowed in the kitchen.
Margaret opened the door before I knocked.
She looked smaller than I remembered. Her gray hair was pulled into a tight bun, and the skin beneath her eyes had turned purple with exhaustion.
“Come in,” she said.
I stepped inside.
The house smelled of dust, coffee, and something faintly medicinal. The furniture was covered with sheets, except for a small table near the window. On it sat two photographs.
One showed Margaret holding a baby.
The other showed my biological parents standing beside a little girl with dark curls.
Grace.
I picked up the second photograph.
“Why do you have this?””
Margaret closed the door.
“Because I was there when it was taken.””
I stared at her.
“You knew them?””
“Yes.””
“You knew my real parents?””
She sat down slowly.
“I knew Elizabeth Cole.””
“What about Michael?””
Margaret looked away.
“Michael was a dangerous man.””
“Dangerous how?””
“He believed he could destroy your father and walk away untouched. He had evidence of the adoption scheme, and he was threatening to give it to the police.””
“Was he lying?””
“No.””
The answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.
I felt my throat tighten.
“Then why did you help Dad steal me?””
Margaret pressed her hands together.
“Because your father told me the Coles were going to use you as leverage. He said Michael had threatened to hurt you if Richard didn't pay him.””
“Was that true?””
“I don't know.””
“You don't know?””
“I believed him.””
I stared at the woman who had raised me.
She looked up at me with tears in her eyes.
“Daniel, I loved you.””
“You can love someone and still do something unforgivable.””
Her face crumpled.
“I know.””
“Where are my biological parents?””
She shook her head.
“I haven't seen them in years.””
“Are they alive?””
“I believe Elizabeth is.””
“And Michael?””
Margaret didn't answer.
I leaned forward.
“Tell me about Grace.””
She covered her mouth.
For a moment, I thought she would refuse.
Then she whispered, “Grace was your sister.””
The room seemed to stop.
“My sister?””
“Your biological parents had two children. You and Grace. Your father took you because he believed you could be used to keep Michael quiet. When Elizabeth tried to expose him, Richard arranged for Grace to be placed with another family.””
“Why?””
“Because she had seen something she shouldn't have seen.””
“What?””
Margaret stared at the photograph.
“Your father killed Michael Cole.””
I couldn't move.
She continued, her voice breaking.
“Michael came to the house to take you back. Richard met him at the lake. They fought. Michael fell into the water, and Richard let him drown.””
I stumbled backward.
“Did the police know?””
“No.””
“Did you?””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“I saw your father come home that night. His clothes were wet. He told me what happened, and he made me swear to protect you.””
I felt as if the air had been sucked from the room.
“And Grace?””
“After Michael died, Elizabeth disappeared. Richard said Grace would be safer with another family. He arranged the placement himself.””
“You let him?””
“I was afraid.””
I laughed once, a hollow sound that frightened even me.
“Everyone was afraid. Everyone knew something. And I was the only fool who believed our family was normal.””
Margaret stood.
“Daniel, please. You need to understand that I never wanted any of this.””
“Then why did you sign the papers?””
“Because Richard threatened to take you away from me.””
“You didn't have me!””
She recoiled as though I'd struck her.
I regretted the words immediately, but I couldn't take them back.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Margaret walked to an old cabinet and removed a small metal box.
“I kept this because I knew one day you'd come asking.””
She placed it on the table.
Inside lay a hospital photograph, several bank receipts, and a folded letter addressed to Ethan.
I opened the letter.
*Ethan, if you're reading this, it means I have failed to keep the family together. Your father did terrible things, but you must not make the same mistake he did. Grace is alive.
She was placed with a family in Vermont under the name Hannah Miller. If you find her, do not tell Daniel until you understand what happened the night Michael died.*
At the bottom, Emily had added a date.
The letter had been written three months before her death.
I looked at Margaret.
“Where is Ethan?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Then why did you tell me to ask him what he did to Grace?””
“Because he came to see me last month.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Ethan was here?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“He said he couldn't face you until he knew whether Grace was safe.””
I gripped the letter.
“Is she?””
Margaret opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
An unfamiliar number.
I answered.
A woman's voice spoke softly.
“Is this Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Hannah Miller. I believe we share the same biological parents.””
I closed my eyes.
“Grace?””
She inhaled sharply.
“That's the name I was born with.””
My hands began to shake.
“Where are you?””
“I need to meet you.””
“Tell me where.””
She hesitated.
Then she said, “Not until you promise me one thing.””
“What?””
“Don't bring Ethan.””
I stared at the letter in my hand.
“Why?””
May you like
Her answer came in a whisper.
“Because your brother is the reason I spent twenty years believing my real family was dead.””
