Chapter 10: The Man Who Stayed Away
Emma didn’t speak.
She just listened.
I watched every emotion cross her face.
Shock.
Fear.
Confusion.
Hope.
All at once.
Finally, she whispered:
“Why now?””
The voice on the phone was quiet.
“Because I heard what happened.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
“Your wedding.””
Emma looked down.
Her hand tightened around the phone.
“How do you know about that?””
“Because I was there.””
My heart stopped.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“Outside.””
Emma looked at me.
I could see the question in her eyes.
Why would someone who loved her stand outside and not come in?
“Why didn’t you come to me?””
The man sighed.
“Because I promised your grandmother I wouldn’t interfere unless you were ready.””
Emma’s voice broke.
“And was I ready?””
“No.””
Silence.
Then he added:
“But I think you are now.””
Michael agreed to meet the next day.
Emma almost canceled three times.
“What if he’s another Daniel?”” she asked.
I looked at her.
“Then you’ll know.””
“And if he’s not?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I knew what she was really asking.
What if he was the father she had always wanted?
What if there was finally someone who shared her blood?
Would there still be room for me?
We met Michael at a small coffee shop.
He looked older than I expected.
Not like a mysterious stranger.
Like a tired man who had carried regret for decades.
When Emma saw him, she stopped.
He stood slowly.
“Hi, Emma.””
She stared.
“You look familiar.””
He smiled sadly.
“You look exactly like your mother.””
The words hurt.
Because for years, Emma had searched for herself in Daniel’s face.
Not this man’s.
They sat together.
I stayed nearby.
Not because I wanted to interfere.
Because I wasn’t ready to disappear.
Michael explained everything.
He had been young.
Scared.
And manipulated by people who wanted him gone.
“Daniel knew about me,” Michael said.
Emma looked confused.
“What?””
“Daniel knew I was your father.””
Her face changed.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did he pretend?””
Michael looked down.
“Because being your father gave him control.””
Emma closed her eyes.
The truth was becoming heavier.
Michael reached into his bag.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this for years.””
Emma opened it.
Inside was a birthday card.
Never delivered.
Another.
And another.
Every year.
From the day she was born.
Her hands started shaking.
“You wrote these?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you send them?””
Michael looked away.
“Because Daniel threatened me.””
“With what?””
“He said if I contacted you, he would make sure you never knew the truth.””
Emma stared at the cards.
Twenty-three years of birthdays.
Twenty-three years of words she never received.
On the way home, Emma was quiet.
Finally, she said:
“I thought love was about who shared my blood.””
I looked at the road.
“And now?””
She turned toward me.
“Now I think it’s about who showed up.””
The words were simple.
But they meant everything.
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Detective Miller.
I picked up.
“Hello?””
His voice was urgent.
“We found Daniel.””
I sat straighter.
“Where?””
“He tried to leave the state.””
Emma looked at me.
“Is he okay?””
Detective Miller hesitated.
“That’s not the problem.””
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“We found the person who helped him.””
My grip tightened.
“Who?””
The detective lowered his voice.
“Your wife’s sister.””
I looked at Emma.
She went pale.
Because everyone thought Daniel was the only person hiding something.
But now another name had entered the story.
May you like
And this time…
it was someone we trusted.
