Chapter 8: The Evidence She Couldn’t Erase

Vanessa reached for the photograph.

I moved it away.

“No.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Give it to me.””

“Not until you explain.””

She sat down slowly.

The confidence was gone.

The person who always had an excuse suddenly looked like someone trapped.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost laughed.

That was always the sentence people used when it was exactly what you thought.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Vanessa looked at the photo.

“Sophie and I had a difficult relationship.””

I stared at her.

“That’s your explanation?””

“She was angry.””

“She was eight.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I’m trying to.””

She looked away.

“I tried to help her.””

“By making her feel unwanted?””

“No.””

“By making her afraid to speak?””

“No.””

“By making her think love could disappear?””

Her silence was enough.

I placed the photo on the table.

“Who wrote that note?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I picked up my phone.

“I’m calling Rachel.””

“Don’t.””

The speed of her response told me everything.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“She’ll lie.””

“Then let her.””

“You believe her?””

“I believe my daughter.””

Those words hit her.

Because she knew.

She knew she had lost control.

A few minutes later, Rachel sent me another message.

A video.

I pressed play.

At first, I only heard a child crying.

Then I heard Vanessa’s voice.

The recording was old.

The quality was terrible.

But the words were clear.

“You need to stop acting like everyone is against you.””

A little girl’s voice answered.

“I just want Daddy to believe me.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You always make things harder.””

The video ended.

I sat there frozen.

Because I had heard those exact words before.

Not from Sophie.

From Lily.

I looked at Vanessa.

“How long?””

She said nothing.

“How long have you been doing this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked up.

“You don’t get to call this a mistake.””

I stood.

“You made a choice.””

She wiped her face.

“I was trying to create a family.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You were trying to control one.””

The front door opened.

Ava and Madison walked in from the backyard.

They stopped when they saw our faces.

Ava looked scared.

“Are you and Mommy fighting?””

I looked at her.

Then at Madison.

I realized something.

They were victims too.

They had been taught to see their sister differently.

“Come here,” I said.

They walked over slowly.

I sat them down.

“I need you both to understand something.””

They nodded.

“Lily is your sister.””

Madison whispered:

“We know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I mean really understand.””

They looked down.

Ava started crying.

“Did we hurt her?””

That question broke my heart.

Because they were children.

They didn’t create this.

They only repeated what they were given.

I hugged them.

“No. But from now on, we do better.””

That evening, I packed a bag.

Not Lily’s.

Mine.

Vanessa watched from the doorway.

“You’re leaving?””

I looked at her.

“For tonight.””

Her face changed.

“You’re actually doing this?””

“I need time to think.””

She stepped closer.

“You’re going to destroy our family.””

I looked upstairs.

At the room where my daughter had been silently hurting.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m trying to save what’s left of it.””

As I picked up my keys, my phone buzzed.

Another message from Rachel.

This time, it wasn’t a video.

It was a document.

A custody agreement.

And one name was highlighted.

Vanessa’s.

Underneath it was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Vanessa was not the victim in Daniel’s custody battle.*

She was the reason it started.
