Chapter 7: The Lie That Nearly Destroyed Me
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
My father stood in the doorway holding a piece of paper, his face twisted with disappointment. Brandon stood behind him, looking furious. Denise remained beside the dining table, clutching the medical authorization form like she'd just won a war.
And Tiffany?
She was staring at the floor.
"Dad," I finally whispered.
"What are you talking about?""
He held up the document.
"Denise showed me this. She says you've been threatening her, recording her conversations, and making everyone feel unsafe.""
I looked at the paper.
It was a written statement claiming I had threatened to physically harm Denise if she didn't surrender control of the house.
My name appeared at the top.
A witness signature appeared at the bottom.
Tiffany's.
I turned toward her.
"Tiffany?""
She looked up, tears already running down her cheeks.
"I didn't sign that, Ariana.""
Denise immediately interrupted.
"Of course you did, sweetheart. You signed it yesterday when we discussed your safety.""
"No, I didn't!""
Denise stepped toward her.
"Think carefully before you start making accusations.""
Tiffany backed away.
"Stop telling me what to say!""
The room went silent.
My father looked between them.
"What is happening?""
I walked toward him.
"That document is fake, Dad.""
He shook his head.
"Denise says she has been afraid to sleep because of you.""
"Then ask her why she created a company to steal your money.""
His expression hardened.
"Not this again.""
I felt something inside me break.
"She transferred more than $180,000 from your accounts. She filed paperwork to take this house. She is trying to get Brandon to sign documents giving her access to his family's business.""
Brandon stepped forward.
"That's true, Mr. Khalil.""
Dad turned toward him.
"What?""
Brandon removed several pages from his jacket.
"I had my attorney review the wedding agreements. There are provisions that have nothing to do with marriage expenses.""
Denise laughed nervously.
"Brandon, sweetheart, this is a misunderstanding.""
"Don't call me sweetheart.""
Her smile vanished.
He placed the documents on the table.
"You wanted me to sign a power-of-attorney agreement. You told me it was a routine financial arrangement connected to the wedding.""
"It was.""
"No. It would have given you access to accounts belonging to my family's development company.""
Denise looked at my father.
"Are you seriously allowing these people to interrogate me in my own home?""
Dad didn't answer.
Brandon continued.
"And there's something else. I found transfers from my personal account to the company you control.""
Denise's face turned pale.
"Those were reimbursements.""
"For what?""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then she looked at Tiffany.
"You told him?""
Tiffany shook her head.
"I didn't tell him anything.""
Denise suddenly slapped the table.
"You ungrateful little girl!""
Tiffany flinched.
"Everything I've done has been for you!""
"No," Tiffany whispered.
"Everything you've done has been for yourself.""
I had never heard her speak to her mother that way.
Denise took one step toward her.
"You wouldn't have any of this without me.""
Tiffany lifted her chin.
"And I wouldn't have spent my entire life being afraid without you.""
Dad finally moved.
"Denise, sit down.""
She turned toward him.
"Khalil, don't you dare take their side.""
"I'm asking you to sit down.""
For the first time, his voice carried authority.
Denise stared at him.
Then she began crying.
Not softly.
Loud, desperate sobs.
She pressed a hand against her chest.
"I gave up everything for this family. I loved your daughter when nobody else wanted to deal with her.""
I watched my father.
This was the moment when Denise usually won.
She would cry.
He would apologize.
And somehow, I would become the villain.
But this time, he didn't move.
He simply asked:
"Did you transfer my money?""
Denise wiped her cheeks.
"I was managing it.""
"Did you transfer it without telling me?""
"I was protecting our future.""
"Did you file papers to take the house?""
She looked away.
Dad's voice cracked.
"Answer me.""
She whispered something.
I couldn't hear it.
But he did.
His shoulders dropped.
For a moment, he looked like the man I remembered from my childhood, before grief and loneliness had made him so desperate to believe someone would never leave him.
Then he turned toward me.
"I'm sorry.""
Two words.
I had waited months to hear them.
But before I could respond, Denise grabbed her handbag.
"This is ridiculous. I'm leaving.""
Brandon stepped in front of the doorway.
"Not before you explain the money.""
"Move.""
"No.""
Denise looked toward Tiffany.
"You better remember who raised you.""
Tiffany began crying.
"I remember.""
Then she reached into her pocket and removed the black phone.
"And I remember this.""
She opened the recording folder.
Denise's expression changed.
"Tiffany, put that away.""
"No.""
"Give it to me.""
Tiffany pressed play.
Denise's own voice filled the room.
"She signed it?""
The accountant answered.
"Not yet.""
"Then make her understand.""
"Denise, this has gone too far.""
And then came the sentence.
"Do you want to end up like Robert?""
My father slowly turned toward Denise.
"Robert?""
Denise froze.
Tiffany looked at him.
"That's my biological father, Dad. The man Mom told me abandoned us.""
Khalil stared at the phone.
"What does that recording mean?""
Denise reached for the device.
Tiffany pulled it away.
"Stay away from me!""
The recording continued.
A man's voice asked, "What about Melissa?""
Denise replied:
"Melissa should have disappeared quietly. I won't make that mistake twice.""
The room went deathly silent.
My father looked sick.
Brandon covered his mouth.
I felt my stomach turn.
Then came the final sentence.
Denise's voice was almost cheerful.
"And Ariana will be easier. Her father already thinks she's unstable.""
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
My father slowly sat down.
He looked at Denise as if he were seeing a stranger.
"Did you say that?""
Denise's lips trembled.
"That recording has been edited.""
Tiffany shook her head.
"No, Mom. It hasn't.""
"You're a liar!""
"You taught me how.""
That was when someone knocked loudly at the front door.
Brandon stepped aside.
Two officers entered, accompanied by Laura.
Laura held a folder.
"Denise, we need to speak with you about several financial transactions and allegations involving the falsification of legal documents.""
Denise immediately raised her voice.
"This is a family matter!""
Laura remained calm.
"Not anymore.""
One officer approached the dining table.
"Ma'am, we'd like you to come with us while we clarify a few things.""
Denise looked at Khalil.
"You're going to let them do this?""
My father didn't answer.
She turned toward Tiffany.
"Tell them the recording is fake.""
Tiffany began shaking.
"Tell them, sweetheart!""
But Tiffany finally looked at her mother.
And said:
"I'm done lying for you.""
Denise was escorted outside.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then my father reached for my hand.
"Ariana, I never should have doubted you.""
I wanted to hug him.
I really did.
But I couldn't forget how easily he had believed Denise's lies.
"There's something else, Dad.""
He looked up.
"What?""
I showed him Laura's latest message.
*We found another account connected to Denise. The account holder is listed as Robert's former business partner.*
Dad frowned.
"Why does that matter?""
Laura looked at him.
"Because the account has been receiving payments for years.""
"From whom?""
Laura hesitated.
Then she answered.
"From someone using your late wife's name.""
My blood ran cold.
May you like
My mother had been dead for seven years.
And somehow, her name was connected to Denise's secret financial network.
