Chapter 6: The Secret Daniel Never Expected Me To Find

The person standing in the doorway was the last person I expected to see.

My brother’s former attorney.

Michael Reeves.

For years, Michael had been part of my family’s inner circle.

He handled legal matters for Harlow Capital.

He attended family dinners.

He knew my grandfather.

He knew me.

And now he stood inside Mercer Global’s boardroom carrying a briefcase.

Daniel looked relieved.

That was the first thing I noticed.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Relieved.

“You’re late,” Daniel said.

The room went completely silent.

Robert slowly turned toward him.

“You know Mr. Reeves?””

Daniel froze.

A second too late.

“Yes,” he said.

Michael walked inside.

“I can explain.””

I stared at him.

“Can you?””

His eyes met mine.

For a brief moment, I saw guilt.

Then it disappeared.

“I was hired as a private consultant.””

“By Daniel?””

Michael said nothing.

That was enough.

I leaned back in my chair.

The betrayal hurt differently.

Daniel was someone who had chosen to hurt me.

Michael was someone who knew exactly what my family had protected.

He knew what my grandfather built.

He knew the trust.

He knew the rules.

And he still helped Daniel.

“Why?”” I asked.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Claire—”

“No.””

My voice stopped him.

“I want the answer.””

He placed the briefcase down.

“Daniel came to me months ago.””

My fingers tightened around the folder.

“Months?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Michael.””

But Michael continued.

“He wanted advice on restructuring his personal assets.””

Robert frowned.

“Before a divorce?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Daniel stood.

“This is a private matter.””

The board member nearest him looked coldly at him.

“Not anymore.””

Michael opened his briefcase.

Inside were documents.

Not financial reports.

Not contracts.

Personal files.

My name was on several pages.

I felt a chill.

“What are those?””

Michael looked at me.

“Your marriage records.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me those.””

“No,” I said.

The room stopped.

Daniel stared.

“Claire.””

“No more secrets.””

Michael slowly handed the documents to the legal counsel.

The lawyer reviewed them.

Then looked up.

“Mr. Mercer, these documents include proposed claims against Mrs. Mercer’s family trust.””

I stared at Daniel.

“You were going after my grandfather’s trust?””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You hid everything from me.””

A strange calm came over me.

“You mean I didn’t tell you every detail of my family’s finances?””

“Yes.””

“Because I wanted to know if you loved me.””

The words surprised even me.

Daniel looked away.

For years, I wondered if he loved me.

Now I finally had my answer.

Not because he left.

Because he tried to take what was never his.

Michael spoke quietly.

“Daniel believed Claire’s trust could be challenged.””

I looked at him.

“Could it?””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“No.””

A silence followed.

“No,” he repeated.

“Your grandfather’s protections were stronger than anything I’ve seen.””

Daniel’s anger exploded.

“Then why did you tell me it was possible?””

Everyone turned toward Michael.

And suddenly, I understood.

Michael wasn’t just helping Daniel.

He had been feeding him hope.

False hope.

“You lied to him,” I said.

Michael looked away.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made a choice.””

Daniel looked between us.

“You knew?””

I looked at him.

“Knew what?””

“That I couldn’t touch the trust.””

“Yes.””

His face twisted.

“And you still married me.””

The room went quiet.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You think I married you because of money?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I stood.

For the first time, I felt completely free.

“I married you because I thought you were the one person who didn’t care about my name.””

Daniel looked at me.

“And now?””

I picked up my folder.

“Now I know you were the person who cared about it the most.””

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, the board continued the meeting.

But before I left, Michael said something that made me stop.

“Claire.””

I turned.

His expression was serious.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“The documents I prepared for him weren’t only about divorce.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else?””

Michael swallowed.

“Daniel was preparing to remove you from the company completely.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

He reached into his briefcase.

“He had another partner.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Michael placed a final document on the table.

At the top was a company name.

A company I recognized.

A company owned by someone who had every reason to want Harlow Capital weakened.

And beneath it was a signature.

Daniel’s.

May you like

And the person who signed beside him was someone I never expected.

My own cousin.
