Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at Nathan’s message until the screen went dark.
*Don’t believe anything Vanessa tells you. There’s something you need to know about the night we got married.*
The words should have made me feel relieved.
They didn’t.
Because after twelve years of marriage, I had learned something about Nathan.
He only told the truth when the truth became dangerous for him.
“What does he mean?”” I asked.
Vanessa leaned against the wall, watching me carefully.
For once, she didn’t look like the confident woman who had spent years tearing me down.
She looked nervous.
“You really don’t remember?”” she asked.
I tightened my grip on the paper.
“Remember what?””
Linda stepped forward.
“Vanessa, stop.””
That caught my attention.
Linda had never stopped Vanessa before.
Not when she insulted me.
Not when she embarrassed me.
Not when she treated me like I was an outsider in my own home.
But now she looked afraid.
I looked between them.
“What are you hiding?””
Nobody answered.
The silence told me more than words could.
I walked toward the kitchen counter and placed the document down.
“Start talking.””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“You always did this.””
“Did what?””
“Act like you’re the only victim.””
I stared at her.
“My husband let you hit me in front of my children.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
A flicker of guilt.
“I shouldn’t have done that,” she admitted.
I almost couldn’t believe what I heard.
The woman who had never apologized in twelve years had finally said the words.
But it wasn’t enough.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I was angry.””
“At what?””
She didn’t answer.
Linda stepped closer.
“You need to leave this house before you make things worse.””
I looked at her.
“This house?””
She immediately regretted the words.
I picked up the document again.
“You keep saying things like this belongs to someone else.””
Linda’s face hardened.
“Because it does.””
My heart started beating faster.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“This house was mine before Nathan.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You really believe that?””
I felt something cold move through my chest.
“What are you talking about?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
A car door slammed outside.
All three of us turned.
Nathan.
A few seconds later, the front door opened.
“Emily?””
His voice echoed through the house.
I stepped into the hallway.
He stopped when he saw Vanessa and Linda standing there.
His face changed instantly.
“You came here?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You should have told her.””
Nathan’s eyes flashed.
“I was going to.””
“When?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
I held up the document.
“When she found out by accident?””
Nathan rubbed his forehead.
“Emily, please.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“No more please. No more waiting. No more protecting everyone’s feelings except mine.””
Nathan looked at the paper.
His expression fell.
“Where did you get that?””
“From our dining table.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
She scoffed.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
My eyes moved between them.
“You both know about this.””
Nathan didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
“You knew?””
He swallowed.
“Emily…”
“You knew?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.
“How long?””
“Since before we got married.””
My breathing stopped.
“Before?””
Nathan stepped closer.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told me the truth was worse than I imagined.
“Your father had debts,” he said quietly.
I froze.
“My father?””
“My family helped him.””
I stared at him.
“My father died six years before I met you.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you bringing him into this?””
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
“Because there were things you didn’t know.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently, there are a lot of things I don’t know.””
He reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“The night before our wedding,” he continued, “your father’s old business partner contacted my family.””
“What business partner?””
Nathan looked at Linda.
She looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“What happened?””
Nathan lowered his voice.
“He wanted the house.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
“He claimed there was money owed.””
“That’s impossible.””
“He had documents.””
My hands started shaking.
“And what did you do?””
Nathan’s eyes filled with regret.
“We protected you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protected me?””
I pointed at the paper.
“You forged my signature.””
His silence answered.
I stepped back.
The man I married.
The man I trusted.
The father of my children.
Had known for twelve years.
“Why?””
Nathan looked broken.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could control it.””
His face went pale.
Because he knew I was right.
I picked up my phone.
“I want a copy of everything.””
Nathan looked alarmed.
“Emily—”
“Everything.””
He didn’t move.
“Emily, if you do this, you’re going to destroy this family.””
I looked at the three people standing in front of me.
The family I had spent years trying to keep together.
Then I looked at the document with my fake signature.
“No.””
I whispered.
“You destroyed it when you decided I didn’t deserve the truth.””
I walked toward the door.
But before I reached it, Nathan said something that made me stop.
“Emily.””
I turned.
His face was full of fear.
“There’s another reason Vanessa hates you.””
I stared at him.
“What reason?””
Nathan opened his mouth.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And the color drained from his face.
I watched him answer.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then his voice changed.
“What do you mean she woke up?””
My heart raced.
“Who woke up?””
Nathan slowly lowered the phone.
May you like
And the next words he said changed everything I thought I knew about my marriage.
“Your mother.””
