Chapter 7: The Baby Was Never Part of Their Plan

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

*Madison says the baby changes everything.*

The words sat on the page like a threat.

I pressed one hand against my stomach.

The baby moved beneath my palm.

My father noticed immediately.

“Vivienne, sweetheart, sit down.””

“I need to know what that means.””

The detective, a broad-shouldered man named Collins, carefully placed the document inside a transparent evidence sleeve.

“We'll establish the context of that note, ma'am. At this stage, we can't assume what the writer intended.””

“Someone forged my signature on a financial document. Someone transferred money into Madison Pierce's account. And now I find a note suggesting my pregnancy matters to the scheme.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me how I'm supposed to interpret that innocently.””

Nobody answered.

Daniel sat with his elbows on his knees, staring at the floor.

Arthur Whitmore stood near the cabinet, flanked by two officers. Eleanor clutched her handbag against her chest, her diamond bracelets trembling against the leather.

For once, neither of them had an insult ready.

Detective Collins turned toward Arthur.

“Mr. Whitmore, did you write this note?””

Arthur straightened his tie.

“I write dozens of notes every day. I cannot possibly remember every sentence.””

“Then you won't object to a handwriting examination.””

“I have nothing to hide.””

The detective glanced at the shredder.

“Your actions tonight suggest otherwise.””

Arthur's face reddened.

My father stepped closer to me.

“Vivienne, do you want to leave this room?””

I shook my head.

“Not until I understand what they've done.””

“Then we'll stay.””

He didn't tell me to calm down. He didn't tell me to stop making a scene.

He simply stood beside me.

That small act nearly broke my heart.

Detective Collins turned another page.

“Mr. Whitmore, this document references a transfer of funds authorized under Ms. Vale's name. Who prepared the authorization?””

Arthur looked at Daniel.

“Your son handled the restructuring.””

Daniel lifted his head.

“You told me the documents were approved by the legal department.””

“They were.””

“Then why is Madison's name on the beneficiary account?””

“Because she was assisting with the transaction.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Madison was your secret financial adviser?””

Arthur's jaw tightened.

“Don't be naïve. Madison has connections you know nothing about.””

“She's my former fiancée!””

“And that made her useful.””

The words escaped Arthur before he could stop himself.

Eleanor recoiled.

“Arthur!””

He turned toward her.

“What?””

“You said Madison was only helping with the wedding arrangements!””

“I said she was helping with a business matter.””

“You told me she was no longer involved with us!””

Arthur rubbed his forehead.

“This is not the time.””

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“You always say that when you've been caught.””

The detective raised his hand.

“Everyone will have an opportunity to give a statement. For now, I need Mr. Whitmore to answer my questions.””

He turned back to Arthur.

“Did you instruct Madison Pierce to transfer funds into an account under her control?””

Arthur said nothing.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

“I will answer through my attorney.””

“That's your right.””

Collins closed the folder.

“But you should understand that refusing to answer here doesn't prevent investigators from examining the records.””

Arthur looked toward the door.

Then he noticed the security officer holding a second folder.

“What is that?””

The officer approached Collins.

“We found this inside the cabinet behind the restricted archive.””

The detective opened it.

Inside were printed emails, bank statements, and several photographs.

The first photograph showed Madison leaving a private restaurant with Arthur.

The second showed them entering a bank together.

The third showed Daniel standing outside the same bank, holding a document envelope.

Daniel stared at it.

“I've never seen that photograph.””

Collins examined the date.

“Three months ago.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I met my father for lunch that day. He told me we were meeting a bank representative.””

“Did you enter the building?””

“Yes.””

“Did you sign anything?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I signed a few forms. I thought they were related to the restructuring.””

My father looked at him.

“Daniel, I need you to be precise. Did you authorize a transfer of funds to Madison Pierce?””

“No.””

“Did you knowingly authorize a transfer using your wife's name?””

“Absolutely not.””

The answer came quickly this time.

I believed that he was frightened.

I still didn't know whether I believed he was innocent.

The detective separated the photographs from the other documents.

“We'll need copies of all of these.””

Arthur suddenly stepped forward.

“Those photographs were obtained illegally.””

Collins looked up.

“Do you know who took them?””

“No.””

“Then how can you know they were obtained illegally?””

Arthur's mouth tightened.

The detective returned to the folder.

“There's one more item.””

He removed a folded sheet of paper.

It was a letter, addressed to Daniel.

The date was six weeks earlier.

Daniel recognized the handwriting immediately.

“That's Madison's.””

“Do you know what it says?”” Collins asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I've never seen it.””

The detective unfolded the letter and read silently.

His expression hardened.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Collins hesitated before answering.

“This letter suggests Ms. Pierce believed the financial transfers could be used to pressure your husband into ending your marriage.””

Daniel went completely still.

“Read it,” I said.

The detective considered me, then turned the page so I could see the relevant paragraph.

Daniel, your father understands that you made a mistake marrying Vivienne. The money can be recovered, but only if you stop protecting her. Once the company establishes her as the person responsible for the transfers, you will be free to move forward. You and I can finally have the life we planned.

My fingers went cold.

I read the paragraph again.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“You told me she hadn't contacted you in years.””

He shook his head helplessly.

“I didn't know about that letter.””

“But you met her.””

“Yes.””

“You hid it.””

“Yes.””

“You allowed your family to treat me like a criminal while you kept secrets with the woman who wanted to replace me.””

“Vivienne, I swear I never agreed to any of this.””

I looked away.

The detective folded the letter.

“We'll verify its origin and establish whether the financial transactions are connected to the communications.””

My father spoke quietly.

“Detective, I would like to provide our company's original investment agreement and the complete transaction records.””

“That would be helpful, Mr. Vale.””

“I also want an independent forensic review of every document bearing my daughter's name.””

“Understood.””

Arthur gave a humorless laugh.

“You're going to destroy a family over a few accounting errors.””

My father turned toward him.

“No. Your decisions may destroy your family. My daughter is simply refusing to carry the blame for them.””

Arthur glared at me.

“You have no idea what you've done.””

I stood up.

My legs felt weak, but I kept my shoulders straight.

“You're right, Arthur. I don't know everything you've done. That's why I'm letting the investigators find out.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You think your father can protect you forever?””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“But I no longer need your permission to protect myself.””

For the first time, Arthur seemed genuinely speechless.

A police officer approached Collins and whispered something to him.

The detective listened, then turned toward the door.

“Mr. Vale, we've received confirmation that Madison Pierce is still on the property.””

My father nodded.

“Where?””

“The underground parking garage. She's attempting to leave.””

Collins closed the folder.

“We need to speak with her immediately.””

Daniel shot to his feet.

“I'm coming with you.””

“No,” I said.

He turned toward me.

“Vivienne—”

“You've had years to tell me the truth. You can wait until the investigators have spoken to her.””

His face fell.

Collins nodded to the officers, and they escorted Arthur toward a separate room while another team prepared to locate Madison.

Eleanor remained beside the desk, staring at the letter.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “did you really not know?””

He didn't answer.

She reached for his arm.

“Your father said everything was under control.””

Daniel pulled away.

“Stop saying that.””

Eleanor looked at him as if he had slapped her.

Then my phone rang.

The screen displayed a number I didn't recognize.

My father glanced at it.

“Don't answer if you don't want to.””

I hesitated, then accepted the call.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice answered.

“Vivienne, it's Madison.””

My stomach tightened.

“How did you get my number?””

“That doesn't matter. You need to listen to me.””

“I'm listening.””

Her breathing was rapid.

“Your father thinks he's uncovered everything, but he hasn't. Arthur is only one part of this.””

I looked at my father.

He signaled for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

Madison continued.

“The transfer records are real, but the original agreement has been altered. Someone changed the beneficiary clause before your father approved the funding.””

My father leaned toward the phone.

“Who is this?””

Madison fell silent.

“Richard Vale,” he said.

“If you have evidence of a crime, provide it to the investigators.””

“You don't understand,” she whispered.

“If you examine the original beneficiary file, you'll see why they needed Vivienne's name.””

My father looked at the folder.

“Explain.””

Madison's voice cracked.

“Because the person who ultimately benefits from the transfer isn't Arthur. It isn't Daniel. And it isn't me.””

“Then who is it?”” I demanded.

She took a shaky breath.

“Vivienne, the money was moved into a trust established before you were born.””

My father froze.

“What trust?”” he asked.

Madison whispered a name.

And the moment she said it, my father looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The trust was registered under my full legal name.

May you like

And its beneficiary wasn't me.

It was my unborn child.
