Chapter 9: The Trap Behind the Threat
I read the message three times before I could make sense of it.
Then I showed it to my father.
His face changed instantly.
"Where is Chloe?""
"With Mrs. Collins," Richard said.
"She took her to the neighbor's house while we were at the bank.""
Dad immediately called Mrs. Collins.
She answered on the second ring.
"Daniel?""
"Is Chloe with you?""
"Yes. She's playing in the living room. What's happened?""
"Stay where you are. Don't open the door for anyone until Richard or I arrive.""
A pause.
"Daniel, you're frightening me.""
"I'm sorry. Please just do as I ask.""
He ended the call and turned to Detective Harris, who had been reviewing the bank documents.
She read the threat without changing her expression, but her voice became sharper.
"This is now a direct threat against a child. We'll arrange protection and investigate the number.""
"Can you trace it?"" I asked.
"We'll try. Don't respond to the sender, and don't delete anything.""
Dad was already moving toward the parking lot.
"Emily, stay with Richard.""
"No.""
He turned.
"I'm not asking you to be brave every second of the day," he said.
"I need to know you're safe.""
"And I need to know Chloe is safe, too.""
For a moment, we stared at each other.
Then Dad nodded.
"All right. We go together.""
The neighbor's house was only five minutes from ours, but the drive felt endless. Dad checked the rearview mirror every few seconds. Richard spoke quietly with Detective Harris over the phone.
I kept staring at the message.
The sender knew we'd opened the second box.
That meant someone had been watching us, tracking our movements, or had access to information from inside the investigation.
When we arrived, Mrs. Collins opened the door before Dad could knock.
Chloe ran straight into my arms.
"Emily!""
I hugged her so tightly that she squeaked.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded, then noticed my expression.
"What's wrong?""
I hesitated.
Dad crouched beside us.
"Someone sent us a frightening message. But the police are helping us, and we're going to make sure you're protected.""
Chloe looked at me.
"Is it Vanessa?""
"We don't know yet.""
She swallowed.
"I think I know something.""
We all turned toward her.
Chloe pulled a folded piece of paper from the pocket of her cardigan.
"I found this in Vanessa's desk last week. I didn't know what it meant, so I kept it.""
Dad unfolded it.
It was a printed email.
The sender's name was Marcus Reed.
The subject line read: *Final Transfer — Bennett Account.*
The message was brief.
The college account must be cleared before the review begins. Once the funds are secure, Vanessa should proceed with the necklace arrangement. Daniel must believe Emily is responsible before he discovers the estate records.
At the bottom was a reply from Vanessa.
Understood. The child has seen too much, but she is manageable.
Dad's fingers tightened around the paper.
"Where did you find this?""
"In the drawer where she keeps her spare keys. She told me never to touch her desk, but I saw my name on the screen when she was typing.""
I hugged Chloe again.
"You did the right thing by keeping it.""
Detective Harris photographed the email and took possession of the original.
"This helps establish coordination between the two of them. We'll verify the email records and preserve the metadata.""
Dad looked at Chloe.
"Did Vanessa know you had this?""
Chloe shook her head.
"No. I put it inside my drawing folder.""
Richard exhaled.
"Then we've got another piece of evidence she doesn't know about.""
For the next hour, the police secured the neighbor's house and arranged for Chloe to stay with a trusted family friend under their supervision. Dad insisted that nobody return to our house until the officers had searched it.
I watched the police move through the rooms, checking the doors and windows, photographing the study, and documenting the place where the photograph had been left.
They found something else.
A tiny wireless camera hidden inside a decorative clock on the bookshelf.
The device had been positioned to capture the study desk and the documents spread across it.
Detective Harris removed it carefully.
"Someone has been monitoring this room.""
Dad stared at the clock.
"Vanessa?""
"We don't know who installed it," she replied.
"But we'll examine the device for recordings and identifying information.""
I remembered the threat.
You found the first box. Destroy the second.
Whoever sent it had known we were at the bank. Whoever installed the camera had been watching the study.
And the only people who knew about the second box were us, the bank staff, and the investigators.
"Could Marcus have someone inside the bank?"" I asked.
"That's one possibility," Detective Harris said.
"But we won't assume that without evidence.""
Richard approached with his phone.
"I've received something from the bank's fraud team. They traced one of the shell company's payments to an account associated with a property in Connecticut.""
Dad frowned.
"What property?""
"A house owned by a company called Reed Holdings. The registered agent is Marcus's brother.""
"Is Vanessa there?""
"We don't know. But the company purchased the property two months ago, shortly before the first large transfer from Emily's account.""
Dad's expression hardened.
"Then that's where we look.""
Detective Harris shook her head.
"Not without the appropriate authorization. We have enough to pursue warrants, but we need to do it properly.""
I looked at the threatening message again.
"What if they leave before you get the warrants?""
"We'll move as quickly as we can.""
That evening, while the officers continued their investigation, Richard and Dad sat at the kitchen table reviewing the financial records.
I joined them with a cup of tea I barely touched.
"Can I ask you something?""
Dad looked up.
"Anything.""
"If Mom knew Vanessa and Marcus were working together, why didn't she tell me?""
He was quiet for a moment.
"Because you were sixteen, and she was sick. She probably hoped she could resolve it without frightening you.""
"But she left a letter saying I should be protected.""
"She was thinking about your future.""
I looked down at my hands.
"Then why did Vanessa marry you if she was already involved with Marcus?""
Richard answered carefully.
"One possibility is that your father's finances gave them access to more money. But we need evidence before we can establish their motive.""
Dad leaned forward.
"Whatever their original plan was, it ends now.""
He reached across the table and covered my hand.
"I'm not letting them take anything else from you.""
For the first time, I believed him.
Then Detective Harris returned from the study holding a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small memory card recovered from the hidden camera.
"We've managed to access a preliminary recording," she said.
"It appears to have been active before we arrived.""
She placed a laptop on the table and played the footage.
The study appeared on the screen.
The timestamp showed 2:13 a.m. the previous night.
A figure entered the room wearing dark clothing and gloves. The person moved directly toward the desk, opened a drawer, and removed a folder containing copies of the bank records.
Then the figure turned toward the camera.
The face was hidden beneath a hood.
But the person wore a distinctive silver watch.
Richard stood abruptly.
"I know that watch.""
Dad stared at him.
"Whose is it?""
Richard's voice was barely audible.
"Marcus gave me one exactly like it for my fiftieth birthday.""
The room went silent.
Detective Harris paused the footage and enlarged the image.
The figure's gloved hand reached toward the camera. For one second, the sleeve shifted, revealing a small scar along the wrist.
Dad looked at Richard.
"Do you have a scar like that?""
Richard pulled back his sleeve.
A thin white scar ran across his wrist.
The same shape.
The same position.
I stepped away from the table.
"No.""
Richard's face had gone gray.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
Dad stood slowly.
"Then explain why someone wearing your watch entered my study in the middle of the night and stole the evidence.""
Richard opened his mouth, then closed it.
"I didn't enter your house.""
"Someone with your watch did.""
"Marcus gave that watch to several people. It was a company gift.""
Detective Harris raised a hand.
"Nobody is accusing you based on the watch alone. We need to establish who appears in the footage.""
Richard looked at me.
"Emily, you know me. I've been helping you.""
I wanted to believe him.
He'd given us the bank records. He'd protected Chloe's video. He'd helped us find the safety deposit boxes.
But he'd also known about the missing money before Dad came home. He'd known Vanessa had taken my mother's jewelry. And now someone wearing his watch had broken into our study.
"Did you know Vanessa before she married Dad?"" I asked.
Richard looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
Dad's voice dropped.
"Richard?""
He finally spoke.
"I met Vanessa through Marcus. I knew they were friends, but I didn't know they were planning anything against your family.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Marcus told me that if I interfered, he'd destroy my business and expose something from my past.""
"What something?""
Richard's face crumpled.
"Years ago, I approved a transaction I should have questioned. I didn't know it was fraudulent at the time. Marcus kept the paperwork and used it to control me.""
Dad stared at him.
"So you've been protecting yourself.""
"I was trying to protect my family.""
"And what about mine?""
Richard lowered his head.
"I failed you.""
Detective Harris took a step toward him.
"Mr. Collins, I'm going to need you to come with us and answer some questions.""
Richard didn't resist.
As the officers escorted him out, he turned toward me one last time.
"Emily, there's something you need to know. The second box wasn't the only thing your mother left behind.""
I stood frozen.
"What do you mean?""
Richard glanced at Detective Harris, then back at me.
"Your mother recorded a second conversation. The first recording was meant to expose the financial fraud. The second was meant to explain what happened in the hospital room.""
Dad stepped forward.
"Where is it?""
Richard swallowed.
"Vanessa has it.""
My blood turned to ice.
"And if she still has that recording," he added, "she may be the only person who knows the truth about the last hour of your mother's life.""
Before I could ask another question, Richard was taken outside.
My father turned toward me.
His expression held grief, anger, and something even more frightening.
Fear.
Because the woman who had tried to frame me for theft wasn't merely hiding stolen money.
May you like
She was hiding the final moments of my mother's life.
And now she knew we were getting close.
