Chapter 4: The Money Behind the Marriage

Daniel stood on the porch holding a thick brown folder.

Behind him, the evening rain tapped against the windows.

I wheeled myself toward the entrance, but Linda moved faster.

"Daniel, this isn't a good time.""

He looked past her at me.

"Marcus asked me to come.""

Linda stepped into the doorway, blocking his path.

"Whatever you have can wait until Monday.""

Daniel didn't move.

"Unfortunately, it can't.""

Jasmine appeared behind her mother.

"What's going on? Why is everyone acting like this is some kind of police investigation?""

Daniel glanced at her.

"Because someone has been moving money without proper authorization.""

Linda's face tightened.

"That's a ridiculous accusation.""

"Then you'll have no problem explaining the documents.""

I motioned toward the living room.

"Come in, Daniel.""

Linda reluctantly stepped aside.

Daniel placed the folder on the coffee table and removed several printed statements.

"I've spent the last forty-eight hours reviewing Marcus's accounts," he began.

"The initial transfers totaled $127,000. I've now identified additional transactions.""

"How much?"" I asked.

He looked at me.

"Approximately $386,000 over fourteen months.""

Patricia covered her mouth.

Jasmine laughed nervously.

"That's impossible. Mom wouldn't do that.""

Daniel continued.

"Some payments went toward household expenses. Others went to credit card accounts, luxury purchases, travel, and transfers to an account that doesn't belong to Marcus.""

Linda crossed her arms.

"I told you. I was protecting him.""

I looked at her.

"From what?""

She lowered herself onto the sofa.

"Marcus, after your accident, everything changed. You were angry, depressed, and unpredictable. I was trying to keep the household running.""

"By transferring nearly four hundred thousand dollars?""

"Don't make it sound so terrible.""

Daniel opened another page.

"There's also the matter of the authorization submitted to First National Bank.""

He slid it across the table.

It was a request to grant Linda expanded control over several of my investment accounts.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I examined it closely.

The handwriting looked almost identical to mine.

But I hadn't signed it.

"Who prepared this?""

Linda swallowed.

"You did.""

"No, I didn't.""

"You were taking medication. You probably don't remember.""

I stared at her.

"You're telling me I signed a financial authorization while heavily medicated?""

She shook her head.

"Marcus, please. You're twisting everything.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"The bank flagged the document because the signature verification didn't match Marcus's historical records. The authorization was never completed.""

I looked at Linda.

"Did you submit it?""

She didn't answer.

"Linda?""

Finally, she whispered, "I was trying to make things easier.""

Jasmine stepped forward.

"Mom was doing everything! You weren't even able to manage your own appointments.""

I turned toward her.

"That doesn't give her permission to use my signature.""

"You're making her sound like a criminal!""

Daniel closed the folder.

"Jasmine, nobody is making a legal determination here. We're documenting financial transactions.""

She rolled her eyes.

"Whatever.""

I looked at the statements again.

One transaction caught my attention.

A payment of $96,000 to a luxury car dealership.

"What's this?""

Linda's eyes darted toward the paper.

"Jasmine needed a reliable vehicle.""

I stared at her.

"She already had a car.""

"That car was old.""

"It was three years old.""

Jasmine interrupted.

"It was embarrassing. Everyone in my circle drives something nice.""

I looked at her.

"So you bought a luxury SUV with my money?""

Linda immediately answered.

"I bought it for her. She's my daughter.""

"And I'm your husband.""

She went silent.

I felt the weight of that sentence settle between us.

For fourteen months, I had been trying to prove that I still belonged in my own family.

Now I was discovering that while I struggled to stand, my wife had been quietly treating my accounts like an unlimited credit line.

Daniel removed another document.

"There's something else.""

He placed a property record on the table.

I recognized the address immediately.

It was a condominium in downtown Chicago that I had purchased years earlier as an investment.

"Why is this here?""

"Because a transfer of beneficial ownership was recently prepared.""

I frowned.

"To whom?""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Jasmine.""

The room went silent.

I turned toward my stepdaughter.

She looked away.

"Did you know about this?""

She folded her arms.

"Mom said it was going to be mine eventually.""

"Eventually?""

"Yes. You have other properties.""

I looked at Linda.

"You were giving away my investment property?""

"It was a gift.""

"Without asking me?""

She stood.

"Marcus, you have more than enough. Why can't you let Jasmine have something?""

"Because it's mine.""

"She's my daughter!""

"And I have spent years treating her like mine.""

Jasmine's eyes narrowed.

"Nobody asked you to.""

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I turned to Daniel.

"Freeze every discretionary transfer. Revoke all additional spending permissions that aren't legally required. Notify the banks that I dispute the unauthorized transactions.""

Linda rushed toward me.

"You can't do that!""

I looked up.

"Why not?""

"Because we have bills! We have responsibilities!""

"Then we'll pay legitimate household expenses through a transparent budget.""

She shook her head.

"You can't just cut us off.""

I gave a small, bitter smile.

"Watch me.""

Daniel gathered his documents.

"I'll coordinate with your attorney tomorrow morning.""

Before he left, he leaned closer.

"Marcus, there's one more thing I haven't mentioned.""

"What?""

He glanced toward Linda and Jasmine.

"Some of the payments appear to have been routed through a company registered under a name connected to someone in your household.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Linda.""

My wife closed her eyes.

Jasmine looked at her mother.

"What company?""

Linda didn't answer.

I stared at the woman I had shared a bed with for eleven years.

"How long have you been hiding things from me?""

She began crying.

But her answer wasn't what I expected.

May you like

"Longer than you think.""

And suddenly, the $386,000 didn't seem like the biggest problem in my marriage.
