Chapter 8: The Truth Emily Left Behind
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to tear the laboratory report apart, grab Lily, and run until I could no longer hear Richard Cole's voice.
But my daughter was watching me.
So I stayed still.
“Lily,” I said softly, “come here, sweetheart.””
Richard stepped between us.
“Not so fast.””
I stared at him.
“You said you wanted the documents. You have them. Let her go.””
“I want something else.””
“What's that?””
“The original evidence. The records Emily kept before she disappeared.””
“You already have the folder.””
“No.”” Richard's smile returned.
“I have copies of copies. Emily was smarter than I gave her credit for. She kept the originals somewhere I couldn't reach.””
I looked at the envelope containing the laboratory report.
“Is that why you took Lily? To force Emily to come out of hiding?””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Emily made a deal with me three years ago. She would disappear, and I would leave the child alone. She broke that agreement by sending you after me.””
“You're lying.””
“Am I?””
He turned toward Lily.
“Tell your father what your mother said.””
Lily shook her head.
“I want to go home.””
Richard crouched in front of her.
“Your mother said you'd understand when you were older.””
“Stop it,” I said.
He rose slowly.
“Your wife stole a child from me, Daniel. Then she convinced you to raise that child as your own.””
“Lily is my daughter.””
“Biologically, perhaps not.””
“She's my daughter because I love her. Because I was there when she took her first steps. Because I held her when she cried for her mother. Because I have spent every day of her life trying to give her a safe home.””
Richard's smile disappeared.
“And how did that work out?””
The words hit their target.
I thought of Lily trembling on the kitchen floor, afraid to ask for food. I thought of the red mark on her wrist, the empty bedroom, and the suitcase packed for a journey she hadn't chosen.
Richard leaned closer.
“You want to know why Vanessa helped me? Because she discovered the truth. She learned that Lily wasn't yours, and she decided she didn't want to spend the rest of her life raising another man's child.””
“Vanessa chose money over a little girl.””
“Vanessa chose herself. People do that, Daniel. It's what separates the powerful from the powerless.””
I looked at Lily.
She had begun to cry silently.
“Daddy, please take me home.””
I took a step toward her.
Richard reached into his pocket.
I stopped.
“Don't,” I warned.
He pulled out his phone.
“Then you'll have to cooperate.””
He pressed a button.
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
“Richard? Are you there?””
My blood turned to ice.
Emily.
I knew that voice. I knew its warmth, its rhythm, the slight breathlessness that appeared when she was worried.
For three years, I had dreamed of hearing it again.
Now it was coming from the phone of the man who had kidnapped my daughter.
Richard smiled.
“Your husband has arrived, Emily.””
Silence.
Then she spoke.
“Daniel? Are you there?””
I couldn't answer.
“Daniel, please. If you can hear me, don't give him the originals.””
My throat tightened.
“Emily?””
A sharp intake of breath came through the speaker.
“Oh, God.””
I closed my eyes.
It was her.
“Where are you?”” I whispered.
“I can't explain everything right now. You need to get Lily out of there.””
Richard snatched the phone away from his ear.
“That's enough.””
Emily's voice rose.
“Richard, you promised!””
“You broke the agreement.””
“I gave you what you wanted. I disappeared. I let my husband believe I was dead. I gave up my home, my name, and my life!””
“And you kept the evidence.””
“Because you were going to hurt Lily.””
Richard ended the call.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
I looked at him.
“You made her disappear.””
Richard shrugged.
“She made a choice.””
“You told me she was dead.””
“I told everyone what they needed to hear.””
I felt something cold settle inside me.
“Where is she?””
“Bring me the originals, and perhaps you'll find out.””
I glanced toward the barn door.
Through the narrow opening, I could see headlights approaching along the gravel road.
Arthur.
And behind him, flashing blue lights.
Richard noticed them too.
His face changed.
“You brought the police?””
“I brought people who know what you're doing.””
He grabbed Lily's arm and pulled her toward the back of the barn.
“Stay back!””
Lily screamed.
I lunged forward, but Richard shoved a metal cart into my path. Tools crashed across the concrete. I stumbled, caught myself, and saw him dragging Lily toward a narrow door at the rear of the building.
“Daddy!””
I sprinted around the cart.
Richard yanked open the door.
Cold air rushed into the barn.
Beyond it lay a narrow passage leading toward the fields.
I reached Lily just as Richard pulled her through.
I grabbed her free hand.
“Let her go!””
For one terrible second, the three of us were locked together, Lily crying between us.
Then a voice rang out from the darkness.
“Richard, stop!””
A woman stood at the far end of the passage.
Gray coat.
Silver bracelet.
A crescent-shaped scar beneath her left ear.
Emily.
She looked older than the woman in my memories. Her face was thinner, her hair shorter, and there were shadows beneath her eyes. But when she looked at Lily, her expression broke into the same tender smile I had seen a thousand times before.
“Baby,” she whispered.
Lily stared at her.
Then she screamed.
“Mommy!””
Richard loosened his grip in surprise.
I pulled Lily toward me and wrapped both arms around her. She buried her face in my chest, sobbing.
Emily took a step forward.
“Lily, sweetheart. It's Mommy.””
My daughter shook her head violently.
“No! You're not real!””
Emily stopped as if she'd been struck.
I looked at her, unable to speak.
She reached toward Lily, then slowly lowered her hand.
“I'm sorry,” she whispered.
“I'm so sorry.””
Richard backed toward the passage.
“You shouldn't have come here.””
Emily looked at him.
“You were going to take her away again.””
“You agreed to stay gone.””
“I agreed to protect my daughter.””
“Your daughter?”” Richard laughed.
“Tell Daniel the truth.””
Emily's eyes met mine.
And I knew, before she spoke, that the truth was about to hurt more than the lie.
“Daniel,” she said, “Richard is Lily's biological father. But I need you to understand how that happened.””
My arms tightened around Lily.
Emily's voice trembled.
“Richard was my supervisor at the hospital. He falsified my medical records and drugged me after I discovered what he was doing. I woke up in a private clinic with no memory of several days. Months later, I learned I was pregnant.””
She swallowed hard.
“I told you the pregnancy was yours because I was terrified of what would happen if Richard found out I had kept the baby.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Emily ignored him.
“I loved you, Daniel. You were the safest person in my life. You gave Lily your name, your home, and your heart. I wanted her to have a father who would love her without conditions.””
I stared at her.
“You could have told me.””
“I know.””
“You could have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you!””
Her face crumpled.
“I didn't know what else to do.””
For three years, I had mourned a woman who was alive. For three years, my daughter had grown up believing her mother had abandoned her. And now the woman I had loved was standing in front of me, asking me to understand a lie that had destroyed our family.
Before I could answer, Richard reached into his coat.
Arthur burst through the barn door with two police officers behind him.
“Hands where we can see them!”” one officer shouted.
Richard turned toward the exit.
Emily grabbed his sleeve.
He shoved her hard against the wall.
She fell.
“Mommy!”” Lily screamed.
I handed Lily to Arthur and rushed toward Emily as the officers tackled Richard to the ground.
But when I reached her, she was clutching her side, struggling to breathe.
“Emily?””
She caught my wrist.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “you have to find the original records. The ones in apartment twelve.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Richard isn't the only person involved.””
May you like
She squeezed my hand.
“And the person who helped him take Lily is someone you have trusted for years.””
