Chapter 3: What Happened the Night Sophie Was Born
Daniel drove to his mother's house that evening.
He left Ethan and Sophie with Michael's wife, who had agreed to stay with them until he returned.
His mother, Margaret, opened the door before he could knock twice.
She looked older than she had that morning.
“Come inside.””
Daniel followed her into the kitchen.
A pot of tea sat untouched on the counter.
“Mom, what did Vanessa mean?””
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Sit down.””
“I'm not sitting down until you tell me what happened.””
“Daniel, please.””
“No. My wife has been hurting my children, and now she's telling me there's something about Sophie's birth that I don't know.””
Margaret pressed her lips together.
Then she opened a drawer and removed an old photograph.
It showed Laura holding newborn Sophie in a hospital bed.
Daniel recognized the room immediately.
The photograph had been taken on the day Sophie was born.
He remembered that day vividly.
He had been called away from the hospital to sign emergency paperwork for his company. When he returned, Laura was unconscious, and the doctors told him she had suffered severe complications.
She died later that night.
At least, that's what he had always been told.
“Why are you showing me this?””
Margaret turned the photograph over.
There was a handwritten message on the back.
My little Sophie. No matter what happens, protect her.
Daniel felt his throat tighten.
“Mom?””
Margaret sat down.
“Laura asked me to promise something before she died.””
“What?””
“That I would protect Sophie if anything happened to her.””
“Why would she say that?””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“Because she was afraid of someone.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Who?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Vanessa.””
The name landed between them.
Daniel shook his head.
“That makes no sense. Vanessa wasn't even part of our lives when Laura was pregnant.””
“She was.””
“What?””
Margaret reached into the drawer again and removed a folded hospital document.
“Vanessa worked at the hospital where Laura gave birth. She was a temporary administrative assistant. She knew about your family before you ever met her.””
Daniel took the paper.
It was a photocopy of a hospital visitor log.
Vanessa's name appeared three times during the two days surrounding Sophie's birth.
His fingers tightened around the document.
“Why was she visiting Laura?””
“I don't know everything,” Margaret said.
“But I know Laura didn't trust her.””
Daniel looked up.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Laura begged me not to. She said the truth would destroy you while you were already grieving.””
Daniel pushed his chair back.
“My wife died, Mom. I buried her. I raised two children believing I understood what happened.””
Margaret began crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
He placed the paper on the table.
“Did Vanessa have anything to do with Laura's death?””
Margaret looked horrified.
“I don't know. But I believe she knew more than she admitted.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For fifteen months, he had allowed Vanessa to raise the child Laura had begged him to protect.
He felt sick.
Back at home, Ethan was sitting on the stairs when Daniel returned.
“Daddy?””
Daniel set down his keys.
“Hey, buddy. Why aren't you in bed?””
“I wanted to wait.””
Daniel sat beside him.
“Did Sophie fall asleep?””
“Yeah. She cried for a little while, but I sang her song.””
“What song?””
“The one Mommy used to sing.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Can you sing it for me?””
Ethan shook his head.
“It's for Sophie.””
Daniel pulled him into a hug.
After a moment, Ethan whispered:
“Daddy, can I tell you something without you getting mad?””
“Always.””
“Vanessa told me Mommy didn't want Sophie.””
Daniel pulled back.
“What?””
“She said Mommy was going to give Sophie away. She said you only kept her because you felt guilty.””
Daniel stared at his son.
“Did you believe her?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. Mommy loved Sophie. I remember.””
“What do you remember?””
The boy looked toward the bedroom.
“She kissed Sophie on the forehead before they took her to the nursery. She told me to be a good big brother.””
Daniel's eyes burned.
Ethan continued.
“Then Vanessa said Mommy didn't really love us. She said Mommy was selfish.””
Daniel held his son's face gently.
“Your mother loved you both more than anything.””
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
Ethan nodded.
Then he whispered something that made Daniel's heart stop.
“Daddy, Vanessa has a picture of Mommy in her bedroom.””
“What kind of picture?””
“The one where Mommy is sleeping in the hospital.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why would she have that?””
“I don't know. But sometimes she talks to it.””
“What does she say?””
Ethan looked frightened.
“She says, ‘You should have stayed quiet.’”
Daniel stood.
“Where is the picture?””
“In her closet. Behind the shoes.””
Daniel went upstairs.
Vanessa's hotel room was empty, and she had not returned home. But her bedroom remained exactly as she had left it.
He opened the closet.
Behind a row of expensive handbags, he found an envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Laura in her hospital bed.
Her eyes were closed.
A small oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
On the back, someone had written:
*SHE KNEW TOO MUCH.*
Daniel's hands went cold.
Beneath the photograph was a folded sheet of paper bearing the hospital's logo.
He unfolded it.
It was a medical incident report dated the night Laura died.
Several lines had been blacked out.
But one sentence remained visible:
Patient requested that the attending physician contact Daniel Carter immediately regarding an unauthorized alteration to the newborn's medical file.
Daniel read it again.
Unauthorized alteration?
He photographed the document and called Michael.
“I found something in Vanessa's room.””
“Don't touch anything else,” Michael replied.
“Photograph the documents and leave them where they are.””
“There's something about an alteration to Sophie's medical file.””
Michael paused.
“Daniel, we need to obtain the original hospital records.””
“Tomorrow morning.””
“There's something else. I received a call from the hospital's legal department. They said a former employee had requested that certain archived records be destroyed several months ago.””
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Who?””
“I'm waiting for confirmation.””
Then another notification appeared on his phone.
An email.
The sender was listed as an unknown address.
The subject line read:
*YOUR WIFE WAS RIGHT ABOUT SOPHIE.*
Daniel opened it.
There was only one sentence.
The little girl you're protecting may not be the biological daughter you believe she is.
Attached was a photograph of a hospital document.
At the bottom were two names.
Laura Carter.
And Vanessa Reed.
Daniel zoomed in.
His stomach dropped.
Because the document wasn't a death certificate.
It was a confidential newborn transfer authorization.
And Vanessa's signature was on it.

Just beneath a line that read:
