Chapter 1: The Hand That Stopped the Strap

“Go ahead. Try it again.””

Daniel Carter’s voice cut through the living room like a blade.

His right hand held the leather strap inches above his eight-year-old son’s shoulder. Across from him, Vanessa, his wife of three years, stood frozen, her fingers still curled around the empty end of the belt.

Ethan was pressed against the wall, one arm wrapped protectively around his head.

Under the coffee table, fifteen-month-old Sophie was crying without making a sound.

Daniel had been away on a business trip for four days. He had expected to come home to a quiet house, kiss his children goodnight, and surprise Vanessa with the necklace he had bought in New York.

Instead, he had walked into a nightmare.

“Daniel!”” Vanessa stammered.

“You're misunderstanding everything.””

Daniel slowly lowered the strap.

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa immediately changed her expression. Her eyebrows lifted, and her eyes filled with tears.

“Your son has been impossible all afternoon. He refuses to listen. He keeps hiding his sister from me. I was only trying to discipline him.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

The boy's cheek was red. His little hands were trembling, but he didn't cry.

“Ethan,” Daniel said gently.

“Come here, buddy.””

Ethan didn't move.

“It's okay. Daddy's home.””

The boy glanced at Vanessa before taking one hesitant step forward.

That single glance told Daniel more than any explanation could.

“Did she hurt you?”” Daniel asked.

Ethan swallowed.

Vanessa interrupted immediately.

“He's exaggerating. You know how sensitive he is.””

“Vanessa, I wasn't talking to you.””

The room went silent.

Daniel crouched in front of his son.

“Did she hit you?””

Ethan's lower lip trembled.

“She wanted Sophie.””

“Why?””

“She said Sophie was being bad.””

Daniel glanced toward the coffee table.

A tiny hand was gripping the edge of the carpet.

“Sophie?”” he called softly.

The little girl didn't answer. She pressed herself farther into the darkness.

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Sweetheart, it's Daddy.””

A small face appeared between the table legs.

Sophie had messy brown curls, wet cheeks, and a stuffed rabbit clutched against her chest. Her pink pajama shirt was stained with something that looked like chocolate.

But what frightened Daniel most was the way she looked at Vanessa.

The moment their eyes met, Sophie began shaking.

Vanessa took one step forward.

“Come here, Sophie. Mommy wants to—”

The toddler screamed.

Not an ordinary toddler's cry.

It was a terrified, desperate scream that made Daniel instinctively move between them.

“Don't come any closer.””

Vanessa stopped.

“Daniel, she's been acting like this all week. She's becoming spoiled because Ethan keeps encouraging her.””

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“That's not true!””

Vanessa's head snapped toward him.

“Be quiet.””

“No!”” Ethan cried.

“You told Sophie that Daddy didn't love her. You said she was going to be sent away!””

Daniel felt something cold settle in his stomach.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“Children invent things. You know that.””

But Ethan was already crying.

“She makes Sophie stand in the corner when she cries. Sometimes she doesn't let her have her bottle. And yesterday…”

He stopped.

Daniel gently touched his son's shoulder.

“What happened yesterday?””

Ethan looked down.

“She locked Sophie in the laundry room.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“That is enough!””

She reached for Ethan.

Daniel caught her wrist before she could touch him.

“Don't.””

For several seconds, neither adult moved.

Then Daniel released her.

“Ethan, take Sophie upstairs. Lock your bedroom door. I'll come get you.””

The boy immediately crawled beneath the table and carefully lifted his sister into his arms.

Sophie wrapped both hands around his neck.

“Bubby,” she whispered.

“I'm here, Soph,” Ethan murmured.

“Daddy's here now.””

Daniel watched them disappear up the stairs.

Only after he heard the bedroom door close did he turn toward his wife.

“Three years, Vanessa. I've trusted you with my children for three years.””

“I am their mother.””

“No. You're my wife. Their mother died giving birth to Sophie.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“You always make me feel like an outsider in this family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“An outsider? You've had everything. This house, my money, my trust. I've never once asked you to replace their mother.””

“Then why do you always choose them over me?””

“Because they're children.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“You don't understand what it's like living with Ethan. He's manipulative. He deliberately makes Sophie misbehave so I look bad.””

Daniel picked up the strap.

“Is this how you teach him?””

She looked away.

“Put that down. You're frightening me.””

Daniel almost laughed.

She was frightened?

His eight-year-old son had just stood between a grown woman and his fifteen-month-old sister.

And somehow, Vanessa was the victim.

“I'm calling their pediatrician,” Daniel said.

“And tomorrow, we're getting professional help to find out exactly what's been happening here.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Why would you do that?””

“Because I want answers.””

She stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“Daniel, before you do anything, there's something you need to know about Sophie.””

He looked at her.

“What about her?””

Vanessa glanced toward the staircase.

May you like

Then she whispered six words that made Daniel's blood run cold.

“She's not who you think she is.””
