Chapter 4: The Voice That Destroyed Everything

Marcus stopped breathing.

The voice coming from the laptop belonged to his younger brother, Daniel.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the screen, waiting for someone to tell him he had misunderstood.

Daniel?

His brother had stood beside him at Sarah's funeral. He had helped carry the coffin. He had hugged Marcus afterward and promised that he would always be there for Noah.

And now his voice was coming from a recording Sarah had made two days before her death.

Vanessa rushed toward the laptop.

“Turn it off!””

Marcus slammed his hand against the table.

“Don't touch it!””

The recording continued.

Daniel's voice sounded impatient.

“Vanessa, you promised me this would be handled. You said Marcus would never find out about the money.””

Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.

“What money?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

On the recording, Sarah spoke weakly.

“I know what you're doing, Daniel. I heard everything.””

Daniel laughed nervously.

“You shouldn't be worrying about this right now, Sarah. You need to rest.””

“Don't pretend you care about my health.””

“I'm trying to help my brother.””

“No. You're helping yourself.””

There was a pause.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“Look, Vanessa told me Marcus doesn't know about the account. Once Sarah is gone, we can settle everything without dragging him into it.””

Marcus gripped the edge of the counter.

“What account?””

Evelyn stepped closer to the laptop.

Sarah's voice returned.

“Daniel, the money in Noah's education account was left for him by his grandfather. You have no right to touch it.””

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

His father had died when Noah was four.

Before his death, he had established a college fund for his only grandson.

Marcus remembered the paperwork. He remembered the promises.

He also remembered Vanessa telling him that the account had been transferred into a different investment because the original bank was charging unnecessary fees.

He had trusted her.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “what happened to Noah's college fund?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, this is being taken completely out of context.””

“Answer me.””

“It was an investment.””

“Where is the money?””

“I don't know the exact amount anymore.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You managed an account belonging to my son, and you don't know where his money is?””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“I was trying to make more money for him!””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Then why did Sarah sound so frightened?””

Nobody answered.

The recording continued.

Sarah's breathing was audible.

“I found the bank statements, Daniel. I know the withdrawals weren't investments. I know where the money went.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

“No. I made a mistake trusting Vanessa to handle my son's future.””

A chair scraped against the floor.

Then Daniel said something that made Marcus stumble backward.

“Vanessa told me the boy would never know. She said once you married her, she would become the only mother he remembered.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

Vanessa covered her face.

Evelyn whispered, “Dear God.””

On the recording, Sarah spoke again.

“She's not his mother, Daniel. And she never will be if she continues treating him like this.””

Daniel sighed.

“Sarah, you're dying. You need to stop fighting everybody.””

There was a long silence.

Then Sarah said, very softly:

“I may be dying, but I am not leaving my son without protection.””

The recording ended.

Marcus remained motionless.

The laptop fan hummed.

Somewhere outside, a car passed along the street.

Then Noah spoke.

“Dad?””

Marcus turned.

The boy was standing beside Evelyn, his eyes red.

“Did Uncle Daniel take my money?””

Marcus swallowed.

“I don't know yet, buddy.””

“But Grandpa saved it for me, right?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would Uncle Daniel take it?””

Marcus couldn't find an answer that wouldn't hurt him more.

Evelyn gently touched Noah's shoulder.

“Some grown-ups make choices they should never make, sweetheart. But none of this is your fault.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed bitterly.

“Wonderful. Now everybody gets to pretend I'm some kind of criminal.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Are you saying you didn't take the money?””

“I said it was an investment!””

“Show me the account statements.””

“I don't have them here.””

“Then we'll get them from the bank.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“Marcus, you don't understand how complicated this is.””

“Make me understand.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel needed help. He was in trouble with his business. I moved some money temporarily.””

“How much?””

Vanessa looked away.

“How much?””

“Eighty thousand.””

Marcus's knees nearly buckled.

Eighty thousand dollars.

His father's savings.

His son's future.

“Where is it now?””

“Daniel was supposed to repay it.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Was supposed to?””

Vanessa began crying.

“He said he had a deal coming through. He said everything would be restored.””

Evelyn's voice became icy.

“You stole from a child to rescue a grown man who was perfectly capable of earning his own money.””

“I didn't steal anything!””

“Then why did Sarah feel she had to record you?””

Vanessa turned toward Evelyn.

“Because she wanted to ruin me!””

Evelyn took one step forward.

“No. Sarah wanted her son protected.””

Marcus picked up his phone.

He called Daniel.

The first call went unanswered.

He called again.

Nothing.

On the third attempt, Daniel finally picked up.

“Hey, brother. Everything okay?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Where is Noah's college fund?””

Silence.

Then Daniel laughed awkwardly.

“What are you talking about?””

“Don't play games with me.””

“Marcus, I'm busy.””

“I heard the recording.””

Another silence.

Daniel's voice changed.

“What recording?””

“Sarah's.””

Marcus heard a sharp breath.

Then Daniel said, “Listen, whatever Sarah told you, she was confused toward the end.””

“That's exactly what Vanessa said.””

“Because it's true.””

“Did you take eighty thousand dollars from Noah's account?””

Daniel exhaled.

“Vanessa was supposed to explain that.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Where is the money?””

“It's tied up in the business.””

“Then untie it.””

“It's not that simple.””

“That's my son's money!””

“Marcus, you have no idea what I was dealing with back then.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Try me.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Vanessa told me Sarah had signed off on everything. She said the money was being moved with your approval.””

Marcus looked toward Vanessa.

“She lied.””

Daniel didn't respond.

“Did you know Sarah was trying to contact Mom?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you know Vanessa was blocking her calls?””

“Marcus—”

“Did you help her?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel said, “I was trying to keep the family together.””

Marcus let out a hollow laugh.

“You helped destroy it.””

He ended the call.

Noah was watching him.

“Dad, are you mad at Uncle Daniel?””

Marcus crouched beside him.

“Yes, buddy. I am.””

“Are you mad at me too?””

The question broke something inside Marcus.

He pulled his son close.

“Never. Do you hear me? Never.””

Noah nodded against his shoulder.

But when Marcus looked over the boy's head, he saw Vanessa standing near the stairs.

She wasn't crying anymore.

She was staring at the USB drive.

And her expression had changed.

She looked calculating.

“Marcus,” she said quietly, “there's something you don't know about Sarah's last night.””

He stood.

“I'm listening.””

Vanessa glanced at Evelyn.

Then at Noah.

“Not in front of the child.””

Evelyn immediately pulled Noah closer.

“Whatever you have to say, you can say it in front of me.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Sarah didn't die believing Marcus had abandoned her.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“She died knowing you had chosen not to come.””

Marcus felt the room go cold.

“That's impossible. I was at the hospital.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not when it mattered.””

Then she walked upstairs, leaving Marcus staring after her.

For the first time, he wondered whether the recording had exposed only half the truth.

And whether someone had deliberately kept him from saying goodbye to the woman who had loved him first.
