Chapter 8: The Son Nobody Knew About

Daniel Brooks agreed to meet us the following morning.

He chose a small coffee shop near the courthouse.

When Malcolm walked through the door, Daniel immediately stood.

He was in his early thirties, tall, neatly dressed, and carrying a leather folder.

He looked uncomfortable.

"Mr. Carter.""

Malcolm studied him.

"You're Victor Hale's son?""

Daniel nodded.

"And Richard Carter's biological son.""

Malcolm went completely still.

I watched his expression change.

"You mean my father had another child?""

Daniel nodded again.

"My mother was Evelyn Hale. She worked for your grandfather's company. She met Richard when he was still married to your mother.""

Malcolm pulled out a chair.

"How long have you known?""

"Since I was seventeen.""

"And my father knew?""

"He paid for my education. He helped my mother buy a house. But he never acknowledged me publicly.""

Malcolm looked away.

"Why are you telling us this now?""

Daniel opened his folder.

"Because I found something after my mother died.""

He placed several documents on the table.

One was a copy of a private business agreement.

Another was a bank transfer record.

And the third was a photograph of Richard Carter standing outside a building in Savannah.

"Your father and Victor Hale established a company years ago," Daniel explained.

"They used it to purchase commercial properties and move money between family trusts.""

Malcolm examined the documents.

"What does this have to do with Isaiah?""

Daniel pointed to the company name.

"Danielle discovered that one of those properties was purchased using money belonging to her family. It was placed in a trust for Isaiah.""

I leaned forward.

"So Tasha transferred it to herself?""

"Not exactly. She transferred it to a company controlled by Richard.""

Malcolm looked up.

"Why would my father want Isaiah's property?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because he wanted to sell it.""

Patricia, who had joined us, spoke quietly.

"That property is worth significantly more now than when it was purchased.""

Daniel nodded.

"And there was another reason. Richard wanted to use the proceeds to finance a business expansion.""

Malcolm stared at him.

"Why couldn't he use his own money?""

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

"Because the business was failing.""

The words landed heavily.

I looked at Malcolm.

"Did you know?""

He shook his head.

"My father told me the company was doing well.""

Daniel opened another document.

"The company had accumulated debts. Richard was using family assets to keep it alive.""

Patricia studied the paperwork.

"These transactions could establish financial fraud.""

Daniel nodded.

"That's why I came forward.""

Malcolm leaned back.

"Why didn't you come forward sooner?""

Daniel looked down at his coffee.

"Because I spent most of my life being told that your family would destroy mine if I spoke.""

He paused.

"And because Richard promised my mother he would provide for me.""

Malcolm's expression softened slightly.

"Did he?""

Daniel laughed without humor.

"He provided money. Not a father.""

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then Daniel pulled out a small flash drive.

"This contains copies of emails between Richard and Tasha.""

Patricia reached for it.

"Where did you get these?""

"My mother kept an old laptop. I found the files after she died.""

Malcolm looked at Daniel.

"Does Tasha know?""

"I think she does.""

"Why?""

"Because she contacted me two weeks ago.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"What did she want?""

Daniel turned toward me.

"She offered me money.""

"How much?""

"Fifty thousand dollars.""

Malcolm's face hardened.

"To do what?""

"To sign a statement claiming that Danielle had authorized the transfer of Isaiah's property.""

Patricia immediately opened her folder.

"Did you sign it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

He reached inside his jacket and produced a folded paper.

"She sent me this draft agreement.""

Patricia read it carefully.

Then she looked up.

"This is serious.""

I leaned forward.

"What does it say?""

"It claims Danielle voluntarily transferred Isaiah's inheritance to Richard Carter's business before her death.""

Malcolm looked sick.

"That's a lie.""

"Yes," Patricia said.

"But someone is trying to establish a paper trail.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"There's something else.""

He placed a final document on the table.

It was a photocopy of an old birth certificate.

The name listed under father was Richard Carter.

But the mother's name wasn't Evelyn Hale.

It was Danielle Carter.

I looked at the paper.

Then at Daniel.

"Why does Danielle's name appear here?""

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Because the original birth certificate was altered.""

Malcolm stared at him.

"Explain.""

Daniel pointed to the date.

"I was born nine months after Richard and Danielle began their marriage.""

Malcolm looked confused.

"But you just said your mother was Evelyn.""

"She raised me. But Danielle was the woman listed on the original hospital paperwork.""

The room went silent.

Patricia carefully examined the certificate.

"Are you saying Danielle gave birth to you?""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what the records indicate.""

Malcolm pushed his chair backward.

"No. My mother told me Danielle couldn't have children.""

Daniel looked at him.

"She could. And she did.""

I felt the pieces shifting.

Danielle had been married to Richard before Malcolm's mother entered the picture.

Malcolm's father had apparently been involved with both women.

And Daniel might have been Danielle's first child.

"Why did Danielle give you up?"" I asked gently.

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Because Richard convinced her that he would destroy her if she kept me. He told her she was unstable and that nobody would believe her.""

Malcolm stared at the table.

"All these years...""

Daniel nodded.

"Your father built his life on secrets.""

Patricia turned another page.

"And Danielle's trust may have been her way of making sure one of her children couldn't be cheated again.""

Daniel looked at Malcolm.

"She contacted my mother shortly before she died. She wanted to tell me the truth, but she was afraid Richard would interfere.""

I swallowed.

"Did she ever tell you about Isaiah?""

Daniel smiled sadly.

"She told me he was the bravest little boy she knew.""

He opened his folder again.

"There is one final thing.""

Inside was a printed email dated three days before Danielle died.

The sender was Richard Carter.

The recipient was Tasha.

The subject line read:

The boy's future.

Malcolm read the message aloud.

"Once Danielle is gone, the inheritance becomes easier to control. Malcolm will be too distracted to question the arrangements. Keep the boy away from the documents.""

His voice broke.

Then he reached the final sentence.

If necessary, we will make sure Isaiah never learns what he is entitled to.

I felt sick.

Patricia took the document.

"This is important evidence.""

But Daniel shook his head.

"There's more.""

He pulled out another page.

This one was dated only three months ago.

It was a bank transfer authorization.

The destination account belonged to a company registered in Delaware.

The company had received $75,000 from an account connected to Isaiah's trust.

And the authorized representative was not Tasha.

It was someone named Renee Carter.

My name.

My signature.

My handwriting.

I stared at the paper.

"I never signed this.""

Malcolm grabbed it.

"That's a forgery.""

Patricia examined the document.

"Then we need to establish who created it.""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"That's why Tasha contacted me.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She said if anything went wrong, the blame would fall on you.""

My blood ran cold.

"Why me?""

Daniel's answer was simple.

"Because your name was the only one Danielle specifically added to the trust.""

Patricia closed the folder.

"Which means somebody has been deliberately preparing evidence to make Renee look responsible.""

Malcolm stood.

"She's not responsible for anything.""

Daniel nodded.

"I believe you.""

Then he slid one final photograph across the table.

It showed Tasha entering a private office building.

Beside her was a woman wearing a dark blue coat.

The woman turned slightly toward the camera.

I recognized her immediately.

It was my mother.

My mother, who had been dead for twelve years.

I stared at the photograph, unable to breathe.

Then Daniel said:

"That's not your mother, Renee.""

He turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten name.

*Evelyn Brooks.*

May you like

His mother.

And apparently, the woman who had helped Richard Carter build the entire scheme.
