Chapter 7: The Secret My Grandfather Took to His Grave

Grandma Pearl stared at the letter in Vanessa's trembling hand.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely frightened.

“Put that down,” Grandma said.

Vanessa smiled.

“Why? Afraid everyone might finally learn the truth?””

My father stepped closer.

“Where did you get that letter?””

“Your late father left it.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father died twenty years ago.””

“Exactly. And apparently, he had more secrets than you realized.””

Vanessa placed the silver star on the table but kept the letter in her hand.

Grandma extended her palm.

“Give it to me.””

“Not until everyone understands what it means.””

She unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was old-fashioned, with elegant loops and carefully spaced words.

I recognized my grandfather's name at the bottom.

*Arthur Whitmore Carter.*

I had only seen his handwriting in birthday cards and old Christmas photographs.

Vanessa began reading.

“Pearl, if you are reading this, I assume the arrangement has finally become necessary. The money Rachel inherited was never meant to be used for Daniel's business…”

My father frowned.

“What money?””

Grandma closed her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

“The original property sale generated enough money to establish a separate inheritance fund for Emily. Daniel must never be allowed to use those funds to settle his debts.””

My father looked at Grandma.

“Debts?””

Grandma didn't answer.

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

“Oh, this is getting interesting.””

She turned toward Daniel.

“Your mother knew, didn't she?””

Grandma finally spoke.

“Daniel's business failed shortly before Rachel died.””

My father lowered his head.

I stared at him.

“What?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was having financial difficulties. Your mother knew.””

“How much money?””

He didn't answer.

Vanessa laughed.

“Nearly four hundred thousand dollars.””

My stomach dropped.

Grandma looked at my father.

“Was it that much?””

Daniel nodded.

“I borrowed against the business. I thought I could recover.””

“And Rachel?””

“She wanted to help me.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“She wanted to protect Emily's inheritance. That's why she refused to let him touch the money.””

I looked at my father.

“Did Mom lose money because of you?””

His eyes filled.

“I made mistakes, Emily. I was desperate. I thought I could fix everything before anyone noticed.””

Grandma sat down slowly.

“Rachel discovered what had happened and insisted that the remaining inheritance be secured.””

Vanessa tapped the letter.

“And that's why she left instructions for the trust. She knew Daniel couldn't be trusted with money.””

My father flinched.

Grandma's eyes sharpened.

“Don't twist her intentions.””

“I'm not twisting anything. I'm simply reading what's written.””

Vanessa placed the letter on the table.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed another document.

“This is why I wanted the red box.””

Michael, the attorney, stepped forward.

“Where did you obtain that?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Three months before Rachel died, she transferred a substantial amount into a separate account. An account that was supposed to benefit Emily.””

I stared at the document.

It showed a bank transfer.

The amount was $185,000.

But the account number was unfamiliar.

“Who owns this account?”” I asked.

Vanessa smiled.

“That's the question, isn't it?””

Grandma took the paper.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she looked at Michael.

“Have you seen this?””

He examined it carefully.

“It's a photocopy. We cannot establish its authenticity from this alone.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Of course. You people always need another document.””

Michael remained calm.

“Because anyone can print a bank transfer.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

My father looked at her.

“Why do you have this?””

She hesitated.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Rachel gave it to me.””

Silence.

Grandma stood.

“That is a lie.””

“Is it?””

“Rachel never trusted you.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“She trusted me enough to tell me where the money was!””

My father stepped toward her.

“You told me you never met Rachel.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Things were complicated.””

“Tell me the truth!””

She finally snapped.

“Fine! I met her twice. Once before our wedding and once at the hospital.

She knew about me. She knew we were together before you officially separated from her!””

My father looked as though someone had struck him.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“Dad?””

He shook his head.

“No. That's not true.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really thought I appeared in your life by accident?””

Grandma's voice was dangerously quiet.

“Enough.””

Vanessa continued.

“Rachel knew everything. She knew Daniel was planning to leave. She knew he had promised me the house. She even knew about the money.””

My father looked sick.

“I never promised you the house.””

“You said we'd have a future together!””

“A future together doesn't mean stealing my daughter's inheritance!””

Vanessa grabbed her coat.

“You're all ungrateful.””

She picked up the silver star and shoved it into her handbag.

Michael moved toward the door.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to return that property.””

She laughed.

“Try stopping me.””

Then she walked out.

My father started after her, but Grandma caught his arm.

“Let her go.””

“She has Rachel's letter!””

“And now we know what she's been hiding.””

Grandma turned toward Michael.

“I want the bank records verified. Every transfer. Every account.””

Michael nodded.

“I'll begin immediately.””

I looked at Grandma.

“Did Mom really know about Vanessa?””

Grandma took my hands.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because she wanted you to remember your childhood as a happy one. Not as a battle between adults.””

I looked down.

“And the money?””

Grandma's expression softened.

“Your mother protected what belonged to you. I promise you that.””

My father sat down.

“I need to tell you something, Emily.””

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

“When Rachel discovered my debts, she sold something valuable to keep the business from collapsing.””

“What?””

He looked toward Grandma.

“Her mother's diamond necklace.””

Grandma's eyes filled with tears.

“That necklace was supposed to be passed down to Emily.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“She sold it for you?””

Daniel nodded.

“She told me it was temporary. She believed I would pay everything back.””

Grandma turned away.

For several moments, the only sound was the heating system humming overhead.

Then Michael's phone rang.

He listened, took notes, and slowly raised his eyebrows.

When he ended the call, he looked at Grandma.

“We have a problem.””

“What now?””

“The account Vanessa showed us does exist.””

Grandma straightened.

“And?””

Michael looked at my father.

“It was opened in Daniel's name.””

My father went pale.

“That account was closed years ago.””

Michael shook his head.

“No. According to the bank, it was reopened eighteen months ago.””

I looked between them.

“Who reopened it?””

Michael placed the printed bank record on the table.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Daniel Carter.

But my father stared at it and whispered:

“That's not my signature.””
