Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

Dad didn't go inside.

He stood in the driveway, scrolling through his banking application while Denise followed him around the SUV, trying to keep her voice low.

I stayed near the garage.

I couldn't stop looking at the empty space where my Honda had been parked.

Three years of payments.

Three years of keeping it clean, replacing worn tires, and checking the oil before long drives.

Gone in a single afternoon.

"Marcus, you're embarrassing me," Denise whispered.

Dad didn't look up.

"Good. Maybe embarrassment will help you remember what happened.""

"Please don't speak to me like that.""

"Then stop treating me like an idiot.""

Kaylee sat on the edge of the SUV's hood.

"Can someone explain why everybody is acting like I committed a crime?""

I turned toward her.

"Did you know Denise was selling my car?""

She rolled her eyes.

"She said you agreed.""

My chest tightened.

"She said what?""

Kaylee looked uncomfortable for half a second before recovering.

"She told me you were helping me out. That you didn't need the car anymore.""

"I drove it to work yesterday.""

"Well, I don't know. That's what she told me.""

Dad finally looked up.

"Nobody is going anywhere until we understand this.""

Denise threw her hands into the air.

"This is ridiculous. I made a decision to help Kaylee. She's been struggling, and Nia has always had everything she needed.""

I stared at her.

"Everything?""

"Yes.""

"Do you remember when I worked double shifts because you said there wasn't enough money for my college books?""

Denise frowned.

"That's not relevant.""

"Do you remember when Kaylee crashed your old sedan and you asked me to pay for the insurance deductible?""

"That was years ago.""

"Do you remember when I paid the electricity bill because you said Dad's paycheck was delayed?""

Dad slowly turned toward her.

"You told me that money came from your savings.""

Denise's jaw tightened.

"I don't want to discuss every little thing we've ever done for this family.""

"Then let's discuss the car," Dad said.

He called the dealership.

I could hear the receptionist answer through the speaker.

"Prestige Luxury Motors. How may I direct your call?""

"My name is Marcus Brooks. I received a notification for a vehicle purchase today. I need to speak with someone about the transaction.""

After a brief hold, a man introduced himself as Daniel, the dealership's sales manager.

Dad explained that the purchase had not been authorized.

Daniel asked for the transaction reference number.

Then came a pause.

"Mr. Brooks, I see the purchase," Daniel said.

"The payment was completed electronically this afternoon.""

"Who authorized it?""

"The customer account was registered under your household information.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

Daniel hesitated.

"The vehicle was purchased by Denise Brooks.""

Dad closed his eyes briefly.

"And my daughter Nia's Honda?""

"Yes. That vehicle was surrendered as part of the transaction arrangement.""

My heart started pounding.

"Surrendered?"" I interrupted.

"I didn't surrender anything.""

There was silence.

Daniel cleared his throat.

"May I confirm your full name?""

"Nia Brooks.""

"According to our file, the Honda was transferred using electronic authorization bearing your name.""

I gripped my phone.

"Show me the authorization.""

"I can send a copy to the registered contact email, subject to verification.""

"Send it to me too. I want to see what you're calling my signature.""

Dad gave Daniel his email address and asked him to preserve every document connected to the sale.

When the call ended, nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Kaylee laughed nervously.

"So there was paperwork. Maybe Nia signed something and forgot.""

I turned toward her.

"I would remember signing away my car.""

Denise snapped her fingers.

"Enough. I told you I handled it.""

Dad looked at her.

"What did you actually sign?""

She avoided his eyes.

"I signed the necessary documents.""

"Under whose name?""

"Marcus, you're making this sound criminal.""

"Because you keep refusing to answer.""

A notification appeared in my inbox.

The dealership had sent the authorization file.

I opened the attachment.

It was a digital vehicle-transfer form.

My name appeared at the bottom.

The signature looked almost convincing.

Almost.

But there was one detail that made my blood run cold.

The signature included my middle initial.

I had never used my middle initial on vehicle paperwork.

The document also listed a phone number I didn't recognize.

"That's not my signature," I said.

Dad leaned over my shoulder.

"Are you certain?""

"Completely.""

Daniel called back.

Dad put him on speaker.

"We reviewed the transaction history," Daniel explained.

"The authorization came through a digital account associated with an email address that appears to have been used for the vehicle transfer.""

"Whose email?"" Dad asked.

Daniel read it aloud.

It was an address I recognized.

Not mine.

Not Dad's.

Denise's.

Kaylee stood up.

"Okay, so what? Mom helped with the paperwork.""

"She didn't have permission," I said.

Denise's face reddened.

"I was trying to help you.""

"By forging my authorization?""

"Don't use words you don't understand.""

Dad's voice dropped.

"Denise, did you sign Nia's name?""

She looked away.

"I had permission to handle family matters.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"Marcus, I did what I had to do.""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Where did the money from the Honda go?""

Denise remained silent.

Dad asked Daniel to check the transaction records.

The sales manager returned a few minutes later.

"Mr. Brooks, I can confirm the trade-in value was processed separately. However, the funds weren't credited directly toward the SUV.""

Dad straightened.

"What do you mean?""

"The proceeds were transferred to an external account listed as a private lender.""

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

"A lender?"" I repeated.

Daniel continued.

"I can't disclose all the recipient details over this call, but the transfer reference is available in the transaction file.""

Dad requested a copy.

When the call ended, he looked directly at Denise.

"Why would the money from Nia's car go to a private lender?""

Denise folded her arms.

"I was protecting this family.""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

"Denise.""

"I said I was protecting us!""

Her voice cracked.

Kaylee moved closer to her.

"Mom, what's going on?""

Denise grabbed her daughter's hand.

"Nothing you need to worry about.""

But Kaylee wasn't looking at her mother anymore.

She was staring at the paperwork on my phone.

Then she whispered something that made my stomach turn.

"Mom, I thought you said the old debt was already paid.""

Dad slowly lifted his head.

"What old debt?""

Kaylee's eyes widened.

Denise released her hand.

"Go inside, Kaylee.""

"No," Dad said.

"Nobody is going inside.""

He took one step toward Denise.

"What debt are you talking about?""

May you like

Denise looked at the ground.

And for the first time, Kaylee looked genuinely afraid of her mother.
