Chapter 8: The Daughter's Secret
Detective Brooks immediately called her trusted partner, Officer James Miller, and ordered him to secure the greenhouse entrance.
She did not tell the senior officer what Eleanor had revealed.
That decision may have saved our lives.
Within minutes, an ambulance arrived to examine Eleanor. She refused to leave the mansion until she had spoken to Richard privately.
“I need to tell you what happened,” she said.
Richard sat beside her on the bed, holding her hand as if he were afraid she might disappear again.
“Take your time.””
Eleanor looked at him.
“I don't have much.””
She explained that three years earlier, she had discovered a series of transfers involving family companies and a private medical facility owned by one of Samuel's associates. The facility specialized in caring for elderly patients who had been declared mentally incapacitated.
But some of those patients had never been examined by independent doctors.
Their families signed guardianship documents. Their assets were transferred to trusts. Their homes were sold.
Then the patients vanished into institutions where nobody questioned their treatment.
Eleanor had found twelve cases.
Three involved people who had died shortly after being admitted.
She believed Samuel was falsifying medical records to help wealthy clients seize control of their relatives' estates.
Marcus had supplied the financial network.
Vanessa had helped identify vulnerable families.
Daniel had unknowingly signed documents for several property transactions that concealed the money.
“And you?”” Richard asked.
“What did you do?””
“I confronted Samuel.””
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“You should have told me.””
“I was afraid you'd confront him before I could gather proof.””
“So you left me alone.””
“I thought I'd be gone for one night.””
Eleanor explained that she had planned to meet a lawyer after the charity dinner. Instead, Marcus intercepted her outside the city and brought her to the mansion.
Samuel was waiting in the greenhouse basement.
“He gave me an injection,” she whispered.
“When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. He told me I'd suffered a breakdown and tried to hurt myself.””
Richard's face twisted with horror.
“They told me your car went off the road.””
“Marcus arranged the crash scene. Samuel handled the medical paperwork. They used another woman's body, someone who had died without family nearby.””
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
“Are you certain?””
“I saw the file. Samuel kept copies of everything because he believed it made him untouchable.””
“Where are those copies now?””
Eleanor looked toward the basement door.
“In a safe.””
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“Inside the house. Behind the portrait of my wedding.””
Richard stood.
“The painting in the upstairs corridor?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Samuel thought nobody would ever look behind it.””
Detective Brooks called Miller and instructed him to secure the portrait.
But before anyone could move, the mansion's lights went out.
A crash sounded upstairs.
Then came the sharp crack of a gunshot.
Richard pulled Eleanor against him.
Brooks drew her weapon.
“Stay down!””
Footsteps thundered above us. Someone shouted that the front entrance had been breached.
I heard Officer Miller yell, followed by a heavy thud.
Then silence.
Brooks motioned for us to remain in the basement while she checked the stairwell. She moved carefully, keeping her weapon raised.
A moment later, she returned.
“Someone cut the power and entered through the service entrance.””
“Samuel?”” Richard asked.
“I don't know. Miller is unconscious, but alive.””
Eleanor began shaking.
“They know I'm here.””
I helped her stand.
“Who?””
“Samuel. He has people everywhere. He'll never let me testify.””
Richard wrapped his arms around her.
“You're not going anywhere alone again.””
For the first time since we had found her, Eleanor looked almost peaceful.
Then she turned toward me.
“Claire, where is Vanessa?””
“We don't know. Lily is still missing.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“My daughter.””
“Do you know where Marcus took her?””
“I know where he would take her if he wanted to frighten Daniel into signing the documents.””
She described an abandoned lakeside lodge that once belonged to Samuel. The property had been sold years earlier, but Marcus had retained access through a company he controlled.
Detective Brooks radioed the location to the search team.
Then Eleanor said something that made my stomach drop.
“Vanessa isn't helping Marcus because she wants the money.””
I stared at her.
“Then why?””
Eleanor looked at Richard.
“Because Samuel told her that if she cooperated, he'd give her the medical records proving she wasn't responsible for her first husband's death.””
Richard frowned.
“Her first husband?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Vanessa was married before Marcus. Her husband died in a boating accident. Samuel handled the autopsy.””
I remembered the way Vanessa had flinched whenever someone mentioned family secrets.
“What really happened?”” I asked.
Eleanor's voice became quieter.
“Her husband discovered the same financial scheme I did. He threatened to report Marcus. Three days later, he drowned.””
Richard covered his mouth.
“Good God.””
“Vanessa was told it was an accident. But Samuel showed her a photograph of her husband shortly before he died. He told her that if she ever betrayed the family, he'd release evidence making her look responsible.””
“So she's been blackmailed for years,” I whispered.
“Exactly.””
A sound came from the staircase.
We turned.
Officer Miller appeared, holding his injured arm.
“Detective, we have a problem.””
Brooks rushed toward him.
“What happened?””
“Samuel escaped. He used the old service tunnel.””
Richard stared at him.
“There's a tunnel?””
Miller nodded.
“It connects the greenhouse to the road behind the estate. Someone opened the outer gate from the inside.””
Brooks's expression hardened.
“Who had access?””
Miller hesitated.
“Your superior, Detective.””
The room went silent.
Eleanor gripped Richard's arm.
“He knows about the safe.””
Brooks looked toward the stairs.
“Then we have to get there first.””
We hurried upstairs. The emergency lights flickered weakly along the corridor. Broken glass lay near the service entrance, and a dark smear marked the wall where Miller had been struck.
The wedding portrait hung above the staircase.
Richard lifted it from its hooks.
Behind it was a steel safe.
Eleanor gave Brooks the combination.
The lock clicked.
Inside lay several folders, a small flash drive, and a sealed envelope addressed to Richard.
He opened the envelope with trembling fingers.
The letter was written in Eleanor's handwriting.
My darling Richard, if you're reading this, then the people I feared have finally exposed themselves. There is one thing you must know before you trust anyone again.
Richard stopped reading.
His face turned gray.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He handed me the letter.
The final paragraph read:
The person who ordered my disappearance wasn't Samuel. Samuel was following instructions from someone who had been part of our family for decades. Someone who knew every password, every account, and every secret. Someone who would benefit most if you were declared incompetent.
Beneath the paragraph was a name.
*Vanessa Whitmore.*
I looked at Eleanor.
She was crying.
“It's not what you think,” she whispered.
Richard turned toward her.
“Then explain it.””
Eleanor took a shaking breath.
“Vanessa arranged the original plan. She wanted Samuel to declare you mentally unfit so she could gain control of the family trust. Marcus was supposed to help her move the money.””
“But you said she was being blackmailed,” I said.
“She was,” Eleanor replied.
“At first. But then she discovered how much money she could make. She chose to continue.””
Richard stumbled backward.
“My daughter?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Vanessa knew I was alive. She visited me in the basement. She brought me food. She promised she'd help me escape.””
“Why didn't she?””
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“Because every time she came, she asked me for the same thing.””
“What?””
“The location of the original trust documents.””
A phone rang upstairs.
It was Richard's.
The caller ID displayed Vanessa's name.
He answered.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa's voice came through, trembling and breathless.
“Dad, please. You have to help me.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Where is Lily?””
A sob escaped her.
“She's with me.””
“Are you safe?””
“No.””
A man's voice sounded in the background.
Vanessa whispered urgently, “Dad, I need you to listen. Samuel is coming back. He's going to kill Marcus, then he's going to kill me.””
Richard tightened his grip on the phone.
“Where are you?””
Vanessa gave us an address.
Then she said the words that made Eleanor collapse into a chair.
“Dad, I didn't know he would kill Mom.””
The call ended.
And before Detective Brooks could trace it, another message appeared on Richard's phone.
A photograph of Lily.
This time, she was standing beside Vanessa in the middle of a dark room.

Behind them, someone had written a message on the wall in red paint.
