Chapter 3: The Judges Asked One Question

The applause faded as I reached the stage.

I could feel hundreds of eyes following me.

My hands were cold.

Dr. Price stood beside the coordinator, holding a folder.

The second judge, Mr. Bennett, approached with a small plate containing one of my chocolate flowers.

He turned it gently between his fingers.

"Aaliyah, may I ask you something?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Why flowers?""

I looked at the bouquet displayed on the table behind him.

"Because I didn't want the cake to become a waste.""

He nodded.

"Explain.""

I took a breath.

"The original cake was made from chocolate sponge and hazelnut filling. When it was moved, some of the outer decorations broke, and I had leftover pieces from trimming the tiers. I couldn't rebuild the original cake, so I decided to use what remained.""

"Why not make cake pops?""

"I thought about that. But I wanted something that looked completely different from what I had originally planned.""

Mr. Bennett smiled.

"And why chocolate?""

"Because chocolate can be shaped in so many ways. It can look delicate even though it's strong enough to hold its form.""

Dr. Price nodded slowly.

"That's a thoughtful answer.""

Then she looked toward the audience.

"Before we continue, I'd like to invite the contestant named on entry number fourteen.""

Tessa stood.

Gloria immediately rose beside her.

"That's us!""

Dr. Price glanced at her clipboard.

"Tessa Mitchell, please.""

Tessa walked toward the stage with a confident smile.

She stopped beside me, keeping her distance.

"Congratulations, Aaliyah," she whispered sarcastically.

"Enjoy your little moment.""

I didn't respond.

Mr. Bennett looked at both of us.

"Your entries were among the most discussed by the judging panel.""

Tessa lifted her chin.

"Thank you.""

"However," he continued, "there is a serious question regarding the preparation of the three-tier chocolate cake entered under your name.""

Tessa's smile tightened.

"What question?""

Dr. Price opened her folder.

"Can you describe how you prepared the hazelnut filling?""

Tessa blinked.

"The hazelnut filling?""

"Yes.""

"Well, I used hazelnuts and chocolate.""

"How much cream did you use?""

Tessa glanced toward Gloria.

"About... two cups?""

Dr. Price waited.

"And at what temperature did you incorporate the chocolate?""

Tessa swallowed.

"I don't remember.""

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

"Did you temper the chocolate yourself?""

"Yes.""

"What method did you use?""

Tessa's face began turning pink.

"I don't know what you mean.""

A few people in the audience exchanged looks.

Gloria raised her hand.

"Excuse me. My daughter is nervous. She's not used to speaking in front of such a large audience.""

Dr. Price looked at her.

"That's understandable. But we're asking questions about the work.""

Gloria walked closer.

"She made that cake. I watched her.""

Mr. Bennett looked at Tessa.

"Then perhaps you can tell us what went into the sugar roses.""

Tessa stared at him.

"The... sugar.""

Silence.

Someone in the audience coughed.

Dr. Price placed her folder on the table.

"We're not asking these questions to embarrass you. We need to verify that every contestant followed the competition rules.""

Tessa's voice became defensive.

"I did follow the rules!""

"Then who made the cake?""

Tessa looked at Gloria.

Gloria immediately answered.

"Tessa made it. I was there the entire time.""

Dr. Price turned toward me.

"Aaliyah, would you mind explaining the original design?""

I felt my heart beating against my ribs.

I looked at Tessa.

Then at Gloria.

I knew what would happen if I told the truth.

My mother would call me ungrateful.

Tessa would accuse me of ruining her future.

But I also knew what would happen if I stayed silent.

Someone else would receive credit for my work.

Again.

So I stepped toward the microphone.

"I made that cake.""

Gloria's face changed instantly.

"Aaliyah!""

I continued.

"I started practicing the design three months ago. The hazelnut filling was made with roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate, heavy cream, and a little butter. I used a specific ratio because the filling needed to stay firm enough to support the second tier.""

Mr. Bennett nodded.

"Can you describe the chocolate tempering process?""

"Yes. I used the seeding method. I melted most of the chocolate, cooled it with finely chopped tempered chocolate, and brought it to working temperature before coating the decorations.""

Dr. Price exchanged a glance with him.

"Thank you.""

Gloria pushed through the audience.

"This is ridiculous!""

The coordinator raised a hand.

"Ma'am, please remain in your seat.""

"No! This is a family matter!""

Dr. Price looked directly at her.

"Not anymore. A contestant has raised a formal concern about misrepresentation.""

Tessa's face went pale.

Gloria turned toward me.

"How could you do this to your sister?""

I looked at her.

"How could you do this to me?""

For a moment, the entire auditorium was silent.

Then Dr. Price asked the question that changed everything.

"Aaliyah, did you voluntarily give Tessa permission to enter your cake under her name?""

"No.""

"Did you help her prepare it?""

"No.""

"Did you agree to have your work presented as hers?""

"No.""

Dr. Price closed the folder.

"Thank you.""

Tessa suddenly started crying.

"Mom, tell them!""

Gloria rushed to her side.

"She's lying because she's jealous. Tessa has worked so hard!""

I looked at my stepsister.

"Then tell them what you did to make it.""

Tessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mr. Bennett picked up the original cake's display card.

He examined it, then looked at the volunteers.

"Who registered this entry?""

A volunteer raised her hand.

"I did, sir. Mrs. Brooks brought the cake to the table and provided Tessa's name.""

Gloria's eyes widened.

"I was helping!""

Dr. Price spoke calmly.

"Did you tell the volunteer that Tessa had made the cake?""

Gloria hesitated.

"I assumed...""

"Did you tell her?""

Gloria's silence was enough.

The coordinator asked security to remain near the stage while the judges reviewed the entry records.

Tessa began sobbing.

"Mom, what's happening?""

Gloria grabbed her arm.

"Don't worry. I'll fix it.""

But her voice lacked its usual confidence.

Dr. Price turned back toward the microphone.

"Now, regarding Aaliyah's bouquet, the panel has reached an additional decision.""

I stood still.

My palms were sweating.

The judges had already recognized my work, but I didn't know what that meant for the competition.

Dr. Price smiled.

"The chocolate cake bouquet has received the highest technical score in the creative transformation category.""

A wave of applause swept through the auditorium.

I covered my mouth.

Mr. Bennett continued.

"More importantly, the panel believes this entry demonstrates something that cannot be measured by decoration alone: resourcefulness, technical skill, and the ability to create something extraordinary under difficult circumstances.""

I looked at my bouquet.

For the first time that day, I felt tears gathering in my eyes for a reason that wasn't humiliation.

Then the coordinator stepped forward.

"We would now like to announce the special prize attached to this distinction.""

Gloria suddenly looked up.

The coordinator unfolded a large envelope.

"The winner will receive a fully funded professional pastry apprenticeship, a $25,000 educational scholarship, and an additional opportunity that has never been offered in this competition before.""

The auditorium erupted.

I couldn't breathe.

Tessa stared at the envelope.

Gloria's fingers tightened around her handbag.

Dr. Price raised her hand for silence.

"However, there is one final matter. Before we announce the recipient, we must confirm something with Aaliyah.""

I looked at her.

"Yes?""

She turned toward the audience.

"Earlier this morning, our sponsors reviewed the registration records and discovered that the cake originally entered under Tessa Mitchell's name was actually created by Aaliyah Brooks.""

Gloria shook her head.

"No. That's not possible.""

Dr. Price continued.

"Because the original cake was presented without its creator's consent, the judges have decided to investigate whether the misrepresentation was intentional.""

Gloria took a step forward.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Dr. Price opened the envelope.

"Mrs. Brooks, please listen carefully. The sponsor has also reviewed the family relationship between the contestants and the circumstances surrounding the transfer of the cake.""

Gloria froze.

The judge looked directly at her.

"And what we discovered changes who is eligible to receive the final prize.""

Tessa grabbed her mother's sleeve.

"Mom?""

Gloria stared at the envelope.

Then Dr. Price delivered the sentence that drained every trace of color from her face.

May you like

"The scholarship was never intended to go to the person holding the cake. It was intended to go to the person who created it.""

And that wasn't the only surprise waiting inside the envelope.
