Chapter 8: Three Babies, One Lie
I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.
Three little girls.
Three hospital bracelets.
Three lives that might have been built on a lie.
My father stood beside me, one hand gripping the back of a chair as though the floor beneath him had become unstable.
"That's impossible," he said.
Claire Bennett shook her head.
"I wish it were.""
She walked to a small cabinet and removed a thick envelope tied with string. Inside were copies of hospital records, newspaper clippings, and photographs taken over the course of several years.
"I started collecting these when Rebecca was declared dead," she explained.
"At first, I thought it was a mistake. Then I discovered that the hospital had issued a second birth certificate under a different name.""
"Whose name?"" I asked.
"Emily Carter.""
My father made a strangled sound.
Claire held up a second document.
"This one listed another baby as Emily Carter. The first certificate was later amended, but the original record was never destroyed.""
I stared at the paper.
The hospital number matched the number on the photograph I had found in Vanessa's bedroom.
"How could one baby have two birth certificates?""
"Because someone had access to the registry, and someone else had the authority to approve the changes.""
"Mr. Whitmore," my father said.
Claire nodded.
"He was involved. But I don't believe he was the person who started it.""
I sat down.
"Why would Vanessa switch three babies?""
Claire looked at me with an expression I couldn't decipher.
"Because each child was connected to a different secret.""
She spread the documents across the table.
"The first baby was you. Your mother had requested a paternity test because she suspected Daniel might be your biological father. Vanessa had access to the laboratory records and knew the results could destroy her plans.""
"What plans?""
"She wanted to marry Richard.""
My father stared at her.
"She was already engaged to Daniel.""
"Exactly," Claire said.
"When Daniel broke off the engagement, Vanessa believed she had lost everything. She had been living in the Carter family's world for years, and she wasn't willing to leave it.""
I felt a chill.
"Was that why Daniel died?""
Claire's expression tightened.
"I don't know whether Vanessa caused the accident. But I know she had a reason to keep him away from this family.""
She placed another photograph on the table.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.
Claire.
Beside her stood Daniel.
He had one arm around her shoulders, and his other hand rested on the baby's blanket.
"He told me he would protect us," Claire said.
"He said he had discovered what Vanessa was doing and that he was going to expose her.""
My father sat down heavily.
"Daniel never told me any of this.""
"He wanted to," Claire replied.
"But Vanessa had convinced him that Richard would never believe him. She told Daniel that if he came forward, she would accuse him of stealing money from the family business.""
My father looked up sharply.
"She did accuse him of that. Before the accident.""
Claire nodded.
"Because it was part of the plan.""
I looked at the photographs again.
"What happened to the other two babies?""
Claire hesitated.
"The second child was Rebecca. She was born to me, but Vanessa arranged for her records to be changed after Daniel disappeared. I was told she had died, and the child who left the hospital under Rebecca's name wasn't my daughter.""
My heart pounded.
"And the third?""
Claire looked toward the hallway.
"Her name was Grace. She was born to a woman who worked at the hospital. That woman died shortly after childbirth. Vanessa claimed the baby had no surviving family, but the records showed a different name on the original bracelet.""
"Who?""
Claire slid a document toward me.
The name was written in faded ink.
*Grace Elizabeth Carter.*
I looked at my father.
He shook his head slowly.
"I've never heard of her.""
"She was registered under your family name," Claire said.
"But I don't know why.""
I picked up the document.
The birth date was seven years after mine.
The same year Rebecca was born.
"Could Grace be Daniel's daughter too?""
Claire looked uncertain.
"Possibly. But there is another problem.""
She turned the paper over.
On the back was a note in Vanessa's handwriting.
Do not allow the three records to be compared.
I felt sick.
My father stood and walked toward the window.
"Why would she do this to children?""
Claire's voice broke.
"Because children grow up. They ask questions. They inherit property. They discover things adults think they can bury.""
I thought of the birthday party, the locked doors, the missing documents, and Vanessa's desperate attempts to keep me upstairs.
She hadn't merely wanted to avoid an awkward conversation.
She had been trying to stop me from meeting the people who could connect the pieces.
My phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Leave Claire's house immediately. You have been lied to.
I showed it to my father.
He called the number.
It went straight to voicemail.
Then Claire's landline rang.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
Her face changed.
"What?""
She listened for several seconds, then slowly lowered the receiver.
"That was the hospital.""
"What did they say?"" I asked.
"They've located the original maternity register.""
My father stepped forward.
"Where?""
"In the archive basement. The records were scheduled for destruction tomorrow morning.""
"Then we need to get there now.""
Claire shook her head.
"They won't release the documents without a legal request. And if Whitmore is still involved, he may already know they're looking.""
My father reached for his coat.
"Then we'll make the request.""
We drove to the hospital with Claire following behind us.
At the records office, a clerk escorted us into a small consultation room and returned with a thick ledger.
The cover was cracked, and the pages smelled of dust and old paper.
My father turned to the date of my birth.
There were three entries.
Emily Carter.
Rebecca Bennett.
Grace Carter.
Each entry had been amended.
Beside the first, someone had written identity verified.
Beside the second, transfer completed.
Beside the third, family placement authorized.
All three amendments carried the same signature.
Vanessa Carter.
But the final page contained a fourth entry.
A baby boy.
Born the same night.
His name had been crossed out, replaced with a handwritten note.
Unregistered. Private transfer.
I stared at the line.
"Who was he?""
The clerk leaned over the ledger.
"There is no corresponding death record. No adoption record either.""
My father looked at me.
"Someone removed an entire child from the system.""
Before we could ask another question, the consultation room door opened.
Mr. Whitmore entered, carrying a leather briefcase.
He looked at the ledger.
Then at my father.
"I was hoping you wouldn't find this.""
My father stood.
"You signed these amendments.""
Whitmore placed his briefcase on the table.
"Richard, you don't understand the consequences of what you're doing.""
"Then explain them.""
The lawyer glanced toward the clerk.
"Could you give us a moment?""
"No," I said.
He turned to me.
"Emily, this is a matter between your father and me.""
"Three babies had their identities changed. A fourth disappeared. You don't get to decide who deserves an explanation.""
Whitmore's expression hardened.
Then he opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.
"I can explain everything," he said.
"But first, you need to understand that one of these children was never supposed to survive.""
The room went silent.
He placed the envelope beside the ledger.
Inside was a photograph of a young woman holding a baby boy.
On the back was a name.
*Daniel Carter.*
My father gripped the table.
"That's impossible.""
Whitmore looked at him.
"Your brother didn't die in that accident, Richard.""
May you like
He paused.
"He was the man who disappeared from this hospital with the fourth child.""
