Chapter 8: The Signature That Changed Everything

Richard Callaway was arrested at 5:29 a.m.
He didn't resist.
He didn't shout.
He simply walked between two officers with a strange smile on his face.
As they led him away, he turned toward Samuel.
"Ask Eleanor why she signed your death certificate.""
Then he disappeared behind the hospital doors.
Samuel remained motionless.
I put a hand on his shoulder.
"Don't listen to him.""
Samuel looked at me.
"What if he's telling the truth?""
"Then we'll find out.""
Daniel approached, holding a thick folder.
"There's something here you both need to see.""
He placed it on the desk.
The folder contained original hospital records from the night we were born.
Birth certificates.
Surgical reports.
Transfer documents.
And a handwritten note signed by a nurse named Margaret Ellis.
Daniel read it aloud.
"At 11:46 p.m., two male infants were delivered by emergency cesarean section. Both were alive. Infant A was transferred to the neonatal unit. Infant B required immediate surgery due to a congenital cardiac abnormality.""
Samuel looked down at his scar.
"That was me.""
Daniel continued.
"At 12:15 a.m., Dr. Richard Callaway entered the neonatal unit without authorization. At 12:32 a.m., one infant was removed from the ward.""
I frowned.
"Which infant?""
Daniel turned the page.
There was a name beside the transfer record.
Nathaniel Brooks.
My name.
But the signature authorizing the transfer belonged to Victoria Callaway.
I stared at it.
"Victoria signed this?""
Samuel leaned closer.
"Why would she sign for a baby she supposedly wanted to protect?""
Daniel examined the next page.
"There's a second signature.""
He pointed.
Grace Brooks.
My mother.
I felt my throat tighten.
"She took me.""
Daniel nodded.
"According to this record, Grace removed one infant from the hospital at 12:32 a.m. The other infant remained under medical supervision.""
Samuel looked at me.
"So she took you.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did Richard say you were the one Victoria kept?""
Daniel turned another page.
A separate transfer order appeared.
It was dated two days later.
The receiving family was listed as the Reeds.
Daniel's adoptive parents.
He stared at it.
"That's my family.""
The document showed that a male infant had been transferred to them.
But the name had been changed.
The original entry had been scratched out.
Someone had written Daniel Reed over it.
I looked at him.
"That means you were Samuel.""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Samuel frowned.
"Then who am I?""
Nobody spoke.
A nurse's note was attached to the file.
Second infant transferred to private care under instruction from Eleanor Callaway.
The receiving address was missing.
But a name appeared at the bottom.
Dr. Michael Callaway.
Alexander stepped closer.
"Michael was Richard's younger brother.""
Eleanor's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"Yes.""
We all turned.
She entered with two state police officers.
Her face was pale, and she leaned heavily on a cane.
I rushed toward her.
"Grandmother, why did you sign Samuel's death certificate?""
She looked at the documents.
Then at Daniel.
And finally at Samuel.
"I didn't.""
Richard's signature had been forged on the declaration.
But the original hospital file contained something else.
Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed a small cassette tape.
"Your grandfather recorded a conversation before he died.""
She handed it to Daniel.
"Play it.""
Daniel found an old recorder in the archive and inserted the tape.
Static filled the room.
Then a man's voice emerged.
Arthur Callaway.
"If this recording is being played, it means Richard has gone further than I feared.""
A pause.
"Victoria is not responsible for what happened to the children. She was manipulated. Eleanor knows the truth, and Grace has the evidence.""
Another pause.
Then Arthur continued.
"Richard believes the inheritance belongs to him. He is wrong. I have arranged for both boys to receive equal ownership. But there is one condition.""
The tape crackled.
"Neither child can inherit until the original medical records are found and their identities are confirmed by the person who delivered them.""
I looked at Eleanor.
"Who delivered us?""
She shook her head.
"Dr. Michael Callaway.""
Alexander's face changed.
"My father.""
I turned toward him.
"You mean your father delivered us?""
Alexander nodded.
"Michael was a surgeon. He was the only person Richard trusted at the hospital.""
"Where is he now?""
Alexander lowered his eyes.
"Dead.""
The room fell silent.
Eleanor took the tape from Daniel.
"Michael was murdered three months after the twins were born.""
I stared at her.
"By Richard?""
She nodded.
"Michael discovered that Richard had falsified the hospital records. He refused to keep quiet.""
Samuel sat down.
"So he killed the doctor who delivered us.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"Yes.""
I felt anger rising again.
"Then why did nobody tell the police?""
"Because Richard controlled the investigation. He had evidence destroyed and witnesses threatened.""
Daniel examined the documents again.
"There's something else.""
He pulled out a sealed envelope.
The name on it was written in blue ink.
For the surviving Callaway twins.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter from Dr. Michael.
To the boys I helped bring into this world,
If you are reading this, I failed to protect you.
One of you was born with a serious heart condition. The other was healthy. Richard insisted that the healthier child remain with the family because he believed he could use him to secure the inheritance.
But I discovered something the family does not know.
The boy with the heart condition is not the child Richard believes he is.
I stopped reading.
Samuel looked up.
"What does that mean?""
I continued.
The medical records were switched after delivery. The surgical scar belongs to the child whose identity Richard tried to erase, but the blood samples prove that the original identification bands were exchanged before the surgery.
I stared at Samuel's scar.
Then at Daniel.
"Which one of you had the heart condition?""
Daniel looked at his own arm.
There was no surgical scar.
Samuel looked down at his.
His face turned white.
"Me.""
Alexander shook his head.
"That doesn't make sense.""
I looked at the letter.
The final paragraph contained only three sentences.
The child with the scar is not Samuel.
The child with the scar is Nathaniel.
The boy who has lived under the name Nathaniel Brooks is the true heir to the Callaway estate.
My entire body went cold.
I looked at Samuel.
Then at Daniel.
Then at Eleanor.
"Which means...""
Eleanor nodded.
"You were switched again, Nathaniel.""
I stared at her.
"By whom?""
She closed her eyes.
"By Victoria.""
The room fell silent.
Daniel stepped backward.
"She switched the babies?""
"Yes," Eleanor whispered.
"She did it because she discovered that Richard planned to kill the child with the heart condition.""
I struggled to understand.
"Then who is Samuel?""
Eleanor looked toward the hospital records.
"Samuel is the child Richard believed he was raising. Daniel is the child Richard believed had been adopted.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Then who am I?""
She took his hand.
"You are Victoria's second son.""
Daniel looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.
I turned toward Samuel.
"And me?""
Eleanor's voice broke.
"You're the child Grace took away. The one Victoria saved by switching the identification bands.""
I thought of the woman who had raised me.
The woman who had sacrificed everything.
She hadn't stolen a child.
She had saved the right one.
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
"What happened?""
He listened.
Then he looked at me.
"Richard's lawyer just filed an emergency petition.""
"What kind of petition?""
Daniel swallowed.
"He's claiming that Nathaniel Brooks isn't legally entitled to anything because his birth identity was never established.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She was crying.
"Then we need Victoria.""
"Why?"" I asked.
"Because she's the only living person who can confirm which baby she held in her arms when she gave birth.""
I took out my phone.
There was a message from an unknown number.
One sentence.
I know you're looking for the truth. Meet me at the rooftop where everything began.
May you like
Then another message appeared.
Come alone, Nathaniel. It's time I told you why I pushed Eleanor.
