Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Golden Doors

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The hotel seemed to have stopped breathing.

Marcus Bell stared at Benjamin Carter as if the floor beneath him had suddenly disappeared.

Victoria looked from the briefcase to the ownership plaque.

Then she laughed.

It was a nervous, brittle sound.

"That's impossible.""

Benjamin didn't respond.

Richard Hayes placed a leather folder on the reception desk.

"Mr. Carter is the majority owner of Carter Hospitality Group," he said.

"That company acquired the St. Charles Royale's parent property portfolio eighteen months ago.""

Marcus looked down at the paperwork.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

The company name was printed in bold.

CARTER HOSPITALITY GROUP.

He slowly raised his head.

"Mr. Carter, I wasn't aware—"

"That you were speaking to the owner?""

Marcus swallowed.

"That your daughter was—"

Benjamin interrupted.

"Would that have changed anything?""

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Naomi stood beside her father, holding Grace's stroller.

She felt strangely detached from everything happening.

An hour earlier, she had been apologizing to a woman who had slapped her.

Now the same woman was watching her father with something close to fear.

Benjamin turned toward Naomi.

"Do you want to sit down?""

She nodded.

He guided her to a nearby sofa.

"Richard, please arrange a private medical examination.""

"Of course.""

Naomi touched his sleeve.

"Daddy, I'm really okay.""

Benjamin crouched in front of her.

"Your cheek is swollen.""

"It's just a slap.""

His expression tightened.

"Nobody gets to decide that hurting you is acceptable.""

Naomi looked down at Grace.

"I didn't want her first memory of a hotel to be people shouting.""

Benjamin's face softened.

"Then we'll make sure the next memory is better.""

He stood and faced Marcus.

"Now, let's discuss what happened.""

Marcus straightened his jacket.

"Certainly, sir. I believe there was a misunderstanding between two guests. Mrs. Whitmore reported that your daughter was aggressive, and I acted to protect the hotel.""

Benjamin glanced toward the ceiling.

"Are those security cameras functional?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Then let's watch them.""

Marcus hesitated.

"Perhaps we should handle this privately.""

Richard opened another folder.

"That's precisely what we intend to do. But the footage must be preserved before anyone has an opportunity to alter or delete it.""

Marcus looked offended.

"We would never tamper with security footage.""

"Excellent," Richard replied.

"Then there shouldn't be a problem.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"This is ridiculous. I have been coming to this hotel for twelve years. I know the standards expected here.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Then you should understand that assaulting another guest is unacceptable.""

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

"I was defending myself.""

Naomi finally spoke.

"From what?""

Victoria turned sharply.

"Don't interrupt me.""

Naomi looked at her father, then back at Victoria.

"You slapped me because I asked you not to touch my baby's stroller.""

Victoria raised her voice.

"You were behaving like you owned the place!""

Benjamin's expression didn't change.

"Interesting choice of words.""

A young receptionist named Emily, who had been standing behind the desk, shifted uneasily.

She had witnessed the entire incident.

She looked toward the security office.

Then at Naomi.

Her fingers tightened around a pen.

Benjamin noticed.

"What's your name?""

"Emily, sir.""

"Emily, did you see what happened?""

Marcus immediately turned.

"Emily, you don't need to get involved.""

Benjamin's eyes moved toward him.

"I asked her a question.""

Emily took a nervous breath.

"Yes, sir. I saw it.""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Be careful what you say.""

Emily looked down.

Victoria folded her arms.

"This is becoming absurd.""

Benjamin stepped slightly closer to the desk.

"Emily, tell me what you saw. Nobody will punish you for telling the truth.""

Emily glanced at Marcus again.

Then she spoke.

"Mrs. Whitmore approached Ms. Carter. She told her she didn't belong here.""

Naomi's eyes filled.

Emily continued.

"Ms. Carter showed her reservation. She didn't shout. She didn't threaten anybody.""

Victoria shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Emily's voice trembled.

"Then Mrs. Whitmore slapped her.""

The words landed heavily.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Emily, that's enough.""

Benjamin turned toward him.

"No. Let her finish.""

Emily swallowed.

"Afterward, Ms. Carter apologized. She kept apologizing even though she was the one who had been hit.""

Naomi looked away.

She didn't want to cry in front of Victoria.

Benjamin reached for her hand.

"Thank you, Emily.""

Emily nodded.

Then she added something nobody expected.

"There's something else, sir.""

Marcus's head snapped toward her.

"Emily.""

She took a step backward.

"What?""

Emily looked at Richard.

"Mrs. Whitmore has been given access to the hotel's private guest information before. She often asks which guests are staying in certain suites.""

Victoria's face changed.

"That is a lie!""

Emily shook her head.

"I've seen the requests.""

Benjamin turned toward Marcus.

"Is that true?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Mrs. Whitmore is a preferred guest. We sometimes accommodate special requests.""

"Special requests involving other guests' private information?""

"It's never been an issue.""

Richard closed his folder.

"That may be an issue for our privacy compliance team.""

Victoria pointed at Emily.

"She should be fired immediately. She has no right to discuss internal hotel matters.""

Benjamin's voice became quiet.

"Mrs. Whitmore, you're in no position to decide who keeps their job.""

He turned to his assistant.

"Daniel, make sure Emily's employment records and internal communications are preserved.""

"Yes, sir.""

Marcus looked increasingly uncomfortable.

"Mr. Carter, I understand you're upset, but I hope we can avoid making personnel decisions based on an emotional situation.""

Benjamin stared at him.

"An emotional situation?""

He gestured toward Naomi's cheek.

"That's the result of your management decision.""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

A few minutes later, the security supervisor arrived with a tablet.

"Mr. Carter, we've located the lobby recordings.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Please preserve the original files and provide copies to our legal team.""

The supervisor nodded.

They gathered around the tablet.

The footage showed Naomi entering the hotel, pushing the stroller, and approaching the reception area.

It showed Victoria turning toward her.

It showed the conversation.

Then the slap.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

Naomi watched herself touch her cheek.

She watched herself bend toward Grace.

And she watched herself apologize.

Her throat tightened.

Benjamin didn't look away from the screen.

When the footage ended, he turned toward Marcus.

"Would you like to explain why you told my daughter to leave?""

Marcus looked pale.

"I was working with the information available to me.""

"You had a witness.""

"I hadn't spoken to Emily yet.""

"You had cameras.""

"I hadn't reviewed them.""

"You had an injured woman standing in front of you.""

Marcus said nothing.

Benjamin closed the tablet cover.

"Then you had everything you needed to stop and investigate. Instead, you chose to protect the person with the most expensive bracelet.""

Victoria took a step forward.

"Mr. Carter, perhaps you should understand that my family has supported this establishment for years.""

Benjamin looked at her.

"Your family?""

"My husband, Richard Whitmore, has business relationships with several major hotel investors.""

Richard Hayes raised an eyebrow.

"Richard Whitmore?""

Victoria seemed relieved.

"Yes. I'm certain you've heard of him.""

Benjamin glanced at his attorney.

"Have we?""

Richard opened his briefcase and checked a document.

"His company submitted a partnership proposal to Carter Hospitality Group last month.""

Victoria smiled.

"Exactly. So I'm sure we can resolve this without embarrassing anyone.""

Benjamin looked back at her.

"Is that what you think this is about? Embarrassment?""

Victoria's smile faded.

"Of course not.""

"Then let me make something clear. My daughter's safety is not a business negotiation.""

He turned toward Marcus.

"Effective immediately, I want an independent investigation into today's incident, the handling of guest information, and every special privilege granted to Mrs. Whitmore.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Effective immediately?""

"Yes.""

Naomi squeezed her father's hand.

"Daddy, I don't want anyone losing their job because of me.""

Benjamin looked at her gently.

"Then nobody should have to lose their job for telling the truth.""

Emily lowered her eyes, trying to hide her relief.

Victoria, however, was furious.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

"I'm calling my husband.""

Benjamin nodded.

"Please do.""

She walked several feet away and pressed a contact.

"Richard? You need to get here immediately. There's been a ridiculous misunderstanding at the hotel.""

She listened.

Then her expression changed.

"What do you mean you know Benjamin Carter?""

Naomi watched her father's face.

He seemed almost bored now.

Victoria turned away from the group.

"Richard, listen to me. This man is making accusations against me, and his daughter—"

She stopped speaking.

Her hand slowly lowered.

"What?""

The silence stretched.

Then she whispered:

"But you told me the partnership was already approved.""

Benjamin's eyes narrowed.

Richard Hayes looked up from his paperwork.

Something about Victoria's reaction had caught his attention.

She ended the call.

For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely frightened.

Benjamin approached her.

"Mrs. Whitmore, is there something your husband would like to discuss with me?""

Victoria shook her head.

"No.""

"Then perhaps I should call him myself.""

Richard Hayes stepped forward.

"Benjamin, there's another matter you should see.""

He opened his briefcase and removed a printed document.

It was a list of pending business transactions involving the Whitmore Group.

At the bottom was a name Benjamin recognized.

Not Richard Whitmore.

Someone much closer to the hotel.

Richard lowered his voice.

"The person who approved Mrs. Whitmore's special privileges wasn't your hotel manager.""

Benjamin studied the signature.

His face hardened.

"It was our regional director.""

Naomi looked between the two men.

"Who is that?""

Benjamin folded the document.

Then he looked toward the elevators.

"Someone who apparently forgot who signs his paycheck.""

And just as he said it, his phone began ringing.

The caller ID displayed one name.

*THOMAS CARTER — REGIONAL OPERATIONS DIRECTOR.*

Benjamin answered.

"Thomas," he said quietly.

"I think you and I need to have a conversation.""

May you like

But the first words Thomas spoke made Benjamin's expression turn completely cold.

"Sir, before you do anything, you need to understand that Victoria Whitmore isn't the real problem. She's been using this hotel to get close to someone in your family.""
