Chapter 10: The Truth Was Never in the DNA

I spent the next thirty minutes staring at Daniel Whitmore's name.

It appeared on the medical record beneath a handwritten note identifying him as a potential biological father.

The man who had raised my daughter.

The man who had held her hand during her school recital.

The man who had smiled politely when I first walked into his home.

I wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.

But after eleven years of lies, I had learned that believing something simply because I wanted it to be true was dangerous.

I called Beatrix.

"Tell me you've found something.""

"I have. And I need you to listen before making any decisions.""

I sent her the photograph.

She was silent for several seconds.

"Where did you get this?""

"Camille.""

"Have you met her?""

"Not yet.""

"Don't. Not without me.""

"Beatrix, does Daniel Whitmore have any connection to Mercer Holdings?""

"I'm checking.""

A few minutes passed.

Then she returned.

"Evelyn, Daniel was a medical consultant for a private clinic eleven years ago. He wasn't employed by the hospital where Lily was born, but he had a professional relationship with Charles Mercer.""

My stomach tightened.

"What kind of relationship?""

"His company provided neonatal care coordination services.""

I gripped the edge of my desk.

"Was he involved in the transfer?""

"His company appears on the original transfer authorization.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then Camille was telling the truth.""

"Possibly. But there's something else. The name written on that record is not in the original laboratory report. It was added later.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means someone may have deliberately inserted Daniel's name to make you suspicious of him.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Who would do that?""

"Someone who wants you to distrust the people caring for Lily.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Camille.

*Camille:* Please. Tonight. The old Mercer estate.

8 p.m. Come alone.

I showed Beatrix.

"She's asking me to meet her.""

"You're not going alone.""

"I won't.""

That evening, Beatrix arranged for a forensic investigator to accompany us.

We arrived at the Mercer estate at 7:55.

The house was dark except for a single light in the library.

Camille was waiting near the fireplace.

She wore a black coat over her maternity dress. Her makeup was gone, and her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she stood.

"You came.""

"I want answers.""

She looked toward Beatrix.

"I asked Evelyn to come alone.""

"Then you should have asked someone else," Beatrix replied.

Camille lowered her eyes.

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Explain Daniel Whitmore.""

She stared at it.

Then she shook her head.

"That name was never supposed to appear on the report.""

"Why was it there?""

"Because Charles wanted you to believe Daniel had something to hide.""

"Did he?""

Camille hesitated.

"No.""

I studied her face.

"Then tell me who Lily's father is.""

She sat down.

For several seconds, she rubbed her hands together.

Then she began.

"Eleven years ago, Charles discovered that Roland's infertility made it impossible for him to produce a biological heir. He was obsessed with having a grandchild to inherit the family business.""

I said nothing.

"Your mother had already agreed to the marriage arrangement. But when you became pregnant, Charles realized the child could become the center of a succession dispute.""

"Why?""

"Because Roland wasn't the biological father.""

"Alistair?""

Camille nodded.

"That's what the original family report indicated.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Then why did the DNA report show Alistair as the father?""

"Because he is.""

"Then what is the secret?""

Camille looked at Beatrix.

"Charles ordered another test. He wanted to know whether the pregnancy involved any genetic complications.""

"And?""

She swallowed.

"The report showed that the biological father was Alistair, but it also revealed that Charles had manipulated the family medical records. He had known about Roland's condition long before the marriage.""

I frowned.

"That isn't new.""

"No. But he had another reason for hiding it.""

Camille opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of an original DNA report.

I recognized the laboratory name.

The date was eleven years earlier.

The report confirmed Alistair's biological relationship to the unborn child.

But there was another page.

It was a genetic relationship analysis involving Roland, Alistair, and the baby.

I read the findings.

Then I looked up.

"Why does this report include Daniel Whitmore?""

"It doesn't.""

I turned the page.

Daniel's name appeared only on the later handwritten copy Camille had sent me.

The original report had a different annotation.

Paternity confirmed: Alistair Mercer.

I looked at Camille.

"You deliberately sent me the altered version.""

She nodded.

"I needed you to distrust Daniel long enough to make you come here.""

My expression hardened.

"You used my daughter to get me into this house?""

"I didn't know how else to reach you.""

"You could have told me the truth.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

"Charles.""

Her voice broke.

"He paid me for years. He made sure I stayed close to Roland. He wanted someone who could monitor the family and keep the original records from being discovered.""

I stared at her.

"So you became my friend because Charles hired you?""

"Yes.""

The answer was so simple that it almost hurt more than the affair.

"Did you ever care about me?""

Camille began crying.

"At first, no. But eventually...""

"Don't.""

She looked down.

I leaned forward.

"You watched me suffer through six years of fertility treatments. You sat beside me while I cried over negative tests. You knew Roland was infertile.

You knew I had already been pregnant. And you still sent me that invitation.""

Camille covered her face.

"I was trying to protect myself.""

"You were trying to protect your money.""

She didn't answer.

I stood.

"Why did you become pregnant with Alistair's child?""

Camille looked up.

"Because I wanted to leave Roland. I thought having a baby would give me leverage.""

"And the baby shower?""

"Charles wanted to present the pregnancy as Roland's heir. He intended to use the child to strengthen Roland's position in the company.""

I stared at her.

"Even though he knew the child wasn't Roland's?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

She looked toward the dark windows.

"Because Charles planned to transfer controlling shares into a family trust once the baby was born.""

I understood.

The baby was never simply a baby to Charles.

It was a corporate asset.

A future bargaining chip.

And my daughter had been treated the same way eleven years earlier.

Beatrix took the original report.

"Camille, we need you to provide a sworn statement.""

Camille nodded.

"I will.""

"Do you have evidence of Charles's instructions?""

She opened another pocket in her handbag.

Then she placed a small recording device on the table.

"I recorded him last week.""

Beatrix pressed play.

Charles's voice filled the library.

The Whitmores are becoming a problem. If Evelyn discovers the adoption was never properly finalized, we'll lose control of the situation.

A second voice responded.

Roland.

What about Lily?

Charles answered without hesitation.

She's a Mercer. She belongs with this family.

Roland sounded uncertain.

Evelyn will fight us.

Charles laughed.

Evelyn has no idea how much her mother signed away.

Then came the sentence that made my blood run cold.

And if Daniel refuses to cooperate, remind him what happened to his first wife.

The recording stopped.

I looked at Camille.

"What happened to his first wife?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Beatrix placed the device in her bag.

"We'll investigate.""

I turned toward the door.

But before I could leave, Camille spoke again.

"Evelyn?""

I stopped.

"There's one more thing.""

I looked back.

She had both hands resting on her stomach.

"The baby I'm carrying...""

Her voice trembled.

"Charles wants to take custody immediately after birth.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because he wants an heir under Mercer control. He has already prepared the guardianship paperwork.""

I shook my head.

"Then don't sign it.""

She laughed bitterly.

"You think it's that simple?""

"It is if you stop accepting money from people who want to own your life.""

Camille lowered her eyes.

For once, I didn't feel sorry for her.

But I didn't wish her harm either.

Her child deserved better than the family waiting to claim him.

I left the estate with Beatrix.

The following morning, we met with Daniel and Rebecca Whitmore.

I showed them the original DNA report.

Daniel read it carefully.

Then he looked at me.

"Evelyn, I need to tell you something.""

I braced myself.

"Go ahead.""

"Eleven years ago, Charles contacted my company. He asked me to coordinate the transfer of a newborn from the hospital to a temporary care facility.""

"Did you know the baby was mine?""

"No. I was told the mother had died during a medical emergency.""

Rebecca reached for his hand.

Daniel continued.

"When I discovered the adoption paperwork was incomplete, I refused to certify it. Charles threatened to destroy my business. But I kept the original documents.""

He walked to a cabinet and removed a folder.

Inside were the hospital transfer records, the original consent forms, and a letter from Eleanor.

The letter instructed Daniel to keep Lily safe until her biological mother could be located.

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"Because Charles told us you had died.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Rebecca stepped forward.

"We should have questioned it. We should have done more.""

Daniel nodded.

"I know.""

He handed Beatrix the documents.

"These are yours now.""

Beatrix examined the papers.

Then she looked at me.

"Evelyn, the original records confirm that your consent was never legally obtained. We can petition the court immediately.""

I looked toward the stairs.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table, drawing a picture.

She looked up and smiled.

"Hi!""

I smiled back.

"Hi, sweetheart.""

She held up her drawing.

It showed three people standing beside a golden retriever.

Rebecca.

Daniel.

And me.

Above them, she had written:

My family.

I knelt beside her.

"That's beautiful.""

Lily studied my face.

"Can you come to my school again next week?""

I felt tears gathering.

"Absolutely.""

She smiled.

Then she asked, "Can I call you Mom someday?""

I couldn't answer immediately.

I held her little hands.

"You can call me whatever feels right to you.""

She considered that.

Then she leaned forward and whispered:

"Okay, Mom.""

I kissed her forehead.

And for the first time, I didn't feel like something had been stolen from me.

I felt like something had finally been returned.

The investigation lasted five months.

Charles Mercer was removed as chairman after the independent audit uncovered more than $11 million in concealed transfers, forged corporate approvals, and fraudulent payments.

The board referred the evidence to the appropriate authorities.

Roland resigned before the next shareholder meeting.

The divorce settlement was reopened, and Beatrix successfully challenged the financial representations he had made during our separation.

Martin Hale helped recover the missing employee bonuses.

Every eligible employee received the money they had been promised.

Alistair cooperated with investigators and provided evidence concerning the family trust.

Camille gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

The child's paternity was formally established as Alistair's.

She eventually left the Mercer estate and moved into a small apartment outside Chicago.

I didn't become her friend again.

Some betrayals don't deserve another opportunity.

But I did send her a message after the baby was born.

Protect your son from the people who tried to turn him into an inheritance.

She replied with two words.

I will.

As for Lily, the family court reviewed the original medical records, the fraudulent surrender documents, and the circumstances surrounding her placement.

The court determined that the supposed consent had never been validly established.

After careful consideration of Lily's wishes and her relationship with both households, a new legal arrangement was approved.

She would remain connected to Daniel and Rebecca, who had raised her with love, while building a relationship with me.

It wasn't the childhood I had imagined.

But it was a future we could choose together.

On Lily's twelfth birthday, I hosted a small celebration at my new home.

There were balloons, chocolate cake, and an astronomy-themed birthday banner.

Lily stood beside the window, looking through the telescope Daniel had given her.

"Mom!""

I turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Come look!""

I walked over.

She pointed toward the sky.

"That's Jupiter.""

I looked through the telescope.

A bright circle appeared against the darkness.

"It's beautiful.""

She grinned.

"Daniel taught me how to find it.""

I smiled.

"Then we'll have to thank him.""

Across the room, Rebecca was arranging plates while Daniel helped set out the cake.

They were no longer strangers.

They were part of the story too.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Beatrix.

*Beatrix:* The final settlement funds have cleared. The Mercer matter is officially closed on our end.

I looked at the message.

Then I opened the old photograph of Lily as a newborn.

For eleven years, the Mercer family had convinced me that I was a woman who couldn't give her husband a child.

They had used my grief to control me.

They had stolen my daughter, forged my signature, diverted company money, and tried to turn an innocent baby into a corporate inheritance.

But they had made one mistake.

They thought my greatest weakness was the child I had lost.

They never considered that discovering the truth would make me stronger than anyone in their family.

Lily ran toward me, holding a small wrapped present.

"Happy birthday to me!"" she announced, laughing.

I laughed too.

Then she handed me a card.

Inside, written in colorful letters, were seven words:

Thank you for finding your way back.

I hugged her.

And this time, nobody could take her away by signing a piece of paper.

Not Charles Mercer.

Not Roland.

Not anyone.

I had spent six years believing I couldn't give Roland a son.

Then another five believing I had lost my daughter.

But the truth was that I had never been the broken one.

The people who needed to be ashamed were the ones who had built their lives on my silence.

May you like

And the most beautiful revenge wasn't watching their empire collapse.

It was standing in my kitchen, listening to my daughter laugh, knowing that the family I had once lost was finally becoming the family I deserved.
