Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.

The little boy couldn't have been older than six.

He wore a blue winter coat and held a stuffed dinosaur against his chest. Daniel was crouching beside him, smiling in a way I hadn't seen in months.

It wasn't a polite smile.

It was the kind of smile he used to give me when we were first dating.

Vanessa stood beside them, one hand resting on the boy's shoulder.

I zoomed in.

The photograph had been taken outside the Cook County courthouse.

The date was visible in the image details.

Six months earlier.

I looked at Richard.

“Tell me that's not what I think it is.””

He studied the photograph.

“I can't tell you anything from one picture.””

“That's his son.””

“Maybe.””

“Richard, look at his face.””

He looked again.

Then he asked, “Does Daniel have any children you know about?””

“No.””

“Has he ever mentioned Vanessa having a child?””

“No.””

I felt sick.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight Christmas mornings.

Eight anniversaries.

And apparently, an entire life I knew nothing about.

My phone vibrated again.

Vanessa had sent another message.

His name is Noah.

I typed a response.

How old is he?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Six.

I put the phone down.

Richard pulled his chair closer.

“Emily, before you respond, we need to be careful. We don't know who this woman is or what she's trying to accomplish.””

“She knows my name.””

“She may know a lot more than you think.””

Another message arrived.

Daniel told me you knew about us.

I read it twice.

Then I typed:

I know he has been paying your rent. I know he created a company using my name. I know almost $900,000 has gone through it. What else is there?

The reply came almost immediately.

I never asked him to use your money.

Then:

And Noah isn't the only reason he kept coming back to me.

I stared at the screen.

Richard reached for my phone.

“Let me see.””

I handed it over.

He read the messages, then looked at me.

“Ask her to meet us somewhere public.””

I hesitated.

“What if she's lying?””

“Then we'll find out.””

I typed:

If you want me to believe you, meet me tomorrow at noon. Bring whatever proof you have.

Vanessa replied:

I will. But please come alone.

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

I typed back:

I'm bringing my brother.

There was no response for almost ten minutes.

Then a final message appeared.

That's probably better. Daniel is more dangerous than you realize.

The next morning, Richard and I met Vanessa at a small café near the river.

She was already there when we arrived.

She looked younger than I expected, perhaps thirty-four. Her dark hair was pulled into a loose ponytail, and she wore a gray sweater beneath a long black coat.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

She glanced at Richard.

“Your brother?””

“Richard.””

They shook hands.

Vanessa sat down and placed a thick envelope on the table.

“I know how this looks,” she said.

I didn't sit immediately.

“Then explain it.””

She nodded.

“Daniel and I met three years ago.””

My jaw tightened.

“Three years?””

“Yes.””

“You've been seeing my husband for three years?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I know.””

“And you have a child together?””

She nodded slowly.

“Daniel is Noah's biological father.””

I pulled out the chair.

“Does my husband know?””

Vanessa looked at me with an expression that almost seemed offended.

“He knows. He was there when Noah was born.””

My hands curled into fists beneath the table.

“Then why did he tell me he was traveling for work?””

“Because he didn't want you to know.””

Richard interrupted.

“Vanessa, let's stay focused. Why did you contact Emily?””

Vanessa opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of bank transfers, company documents, and several emails.

“I found out about E.M. Holdings two weeks ago,” she said.

I looked at the papers.

“Why would you have these?””

“Because Daniel used my company to receive some of the money.””

I frowned.

“Your company?””

“V.C. Property Management. He told me it was an investment arrangement. He said the money came from a family trust and that you were aware of everything.””

Richard examined the documents.

“Were you a director of the company?””

“Yes. But I never controlled the bank account. Daniel handled everything.””

“Did you sign any authorization documents?””

“Some. He said they were necessary for the property business.””

Richard turned a page.

“Did you understand that these transactions involved money from your wife's joint account?””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“No.””

“Did you know that $310,000 was transferred to your company?””

She looked at him.

“Not until last week.””

I leaned forward.

“Where did it go?””

She pointed to a list.

“Some went to property deposits. Some went to a company Daniel called Northbridge Capital. And some went to an account I couldn't access.””

Richard stopped turning pages.

“Northbridge Capital?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That's the name he used.””

Richard pulled out his laptop.

“Did you ever meet anyone from that company?””

“No.””

“Did Daniel explain why he was moving money through it?””

“He said he was protecting assets.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And what about the rent?””

She swallowed.

“Daniel insisted on paying it. He said he wanted Noah to have a stable home.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought you knew.””

I laughed once, bitterly.

“You thought I knew my husband had another family?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“He told me you were separated.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“What?””

“He said you had been living separately for almost two years. He said the divorce was delayed because of financial arrangements.””

Richard leaned back.

“Did he show you any documents?””

Vanessa reached into the envelope again.

“Yes.””

She pulled out a printed email.

The sender was Daniel.

The recipient was Vanessa.

The date was eight months earlier.

The divorce agreement is almost finalized. Once the property restructuring is complete, Emily will receive her settlement, and we can stop hiding.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

There was another attachment.

A document titled:

SEPARATION AND PROPERTY SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.

My name appeared at the bottom.

My signature appeared beneath it.

I hadn't signed it.

Richard took the paper.

“This is a serious problem.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“Did you believe him?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he showed me pictures of an apartment he said you were moving into. He told me you had already agreed to everything.””

I stared at her.

“Did he ever mention our marriage?””

“He said it was over.””

I looked away.

For a moment, the café disappeared.

I remembered Daniel helping me choose our wedding dress. His nervous laugh during our vows. The way he had held my hand at my father's funeral.

Had all those memories been lies?

Richard cleared his throat.

“Vanessa, why are you giving us this now?””

She looked at him.

“Because Daniel told me to move.””

“Move where?””

“Out of the country.””

My eyes snapped toward her.

“What?””

“He said there was a problem with the company. He told me to take Noah and leave Chicago for a few months.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Did he give you a reason?””

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

“He sent me this.””

She placed it on the table.

It was a message from Daniel.

Pack everything. Don't contact Emily. If anyone asks about the money, you know nothing. We leave Friday.

Friday.

Tomorrow.

I looked at Richard.

He was already photographing the message.

“Did you agree to leave?”” he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“Because last night, I found something in Daniel's office.””

She opened her handbag and removed a small flash drive.

“He told me it contained company records. I copied it before he could take it.””

Richard held out his hand.

“What is on it?””

“Emails. Contracts. Bank statements.””

“Anything else?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she looked directly at me.

“There is a recording.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Of what?””

“Daniel talking to someone about you.””

“Who?””

“I don't know. He never used the man's name.””

Richard took the flash drive.

“We'll have it examined properly.””

Vanessa reached across the table.

“Emily, there's something I need you to understand.””

I pulled my hand away.

“What?””

“Daniel didn't start seeing me because he fell in love with me.””

I stared at her.

“Then why?””

Her eyes filled again.

“Because I was supposed to help him get something from you.””

Richard went still.

I felt a chill move through my body.

“What could you possibly help him get?””

Vanessa looked down at the table.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your inheritance.””

I shook my head.

“My inheritance was gone years ago. I invested it in Daniel's company.””

“That's what he wanted you to believe.””

Richard slowly turned toward me.

“Emily, what was the original amount of your inheritance?””

“About $1.2 million.””

“And how much of it went into Daniel's business?””

“All of it.””

Richard looked back at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel told me he had been trying to transfer ownership of the original company shares for years. But he couldn't do it without Emily's authorization.””

I frowned.

“What shares?””

Vanessa slid one final document across the table.

It was an old shareholder agreement from the year Daniel's company had been established.

My name appeared at the top.

So did Daniel's.

But the ownership percentages were different from what I remembered.

I read the first line.

*Emily Carter — 70% controlling shareholder.*

Then I read the second.

*Daniel Carter — 30% minority shareholder.*

My fingers went numb.

I had always believed Daniel owned the company.

He had told me so repeatedly.

But according to the document, I had owned the majority of it from the beginning.

Richard examined the signature page.

“Emily, did you ever sign a transfer of these shares?””

“No.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“Did Daniel tell you he owned the company?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said he had complete control.””

Richard closed the folder.

“Then we need to find out what happened to the ownership records.””

I looked at the flash drive.

Then at the photograph of Daniel with Noah.

Then at the woman sitting across from me.

I had spent three years believing my husband was simply cheating on me.

But the affair had apparently been part of something much larger.

And as Richard placed the documents back inside the envelope, his phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face changed.

“Are you certain?”” he asked.

A pause.

“Send me the filing immediately.””

He ended the call and looked at me.

“What is it?”” I whispered.

Richard turned his phone toward me.

A newly filed business document appeared on the screen.

It had been submitted that morning.

The company was E.M. Holdings LLC.

The filing requested a change in ownership.

The new owner was not Daniel.

It was not Vanessa.

It was a name I recognized immediately.

May you like

My mother.

Who had died eleven years earlier.
